FuGaKyu Japanese Cuisine
Delicious food, very accommodating to our table of eight people. Very generous portions. Very clean restrooms. We plan to visit again at some point in the future!
Three friends shared a Rainbow maki as a starter, which was excellent. The main course choices were varied and two found them excellent. My dish was pork teriyaki and the pork was in large pieces not suitable for chopsticks and I was disappointed. The taste was fine.
The food and service were both amazing. Their expansive menu means everyone in your party can find something they'll like.
Excellent overall experience, wonderful ambiance, excellent service, delicious food.
The sushi is very fresh. Prices have really gone up ... and maybe that’s due to the renovations done recently.
Great for date night, food was really good, and environment was really nice, it almost felt as though we were there alone!
Always a great time and great sushi!
We love FuGaKyu and bring all our friends and relatives to dinner with us. It is always fabulous, but this time the food was not as good as usual. The edamame has no flavor, which was also true of the regular tuna sashimi. Not a big problem, but not as good as usual.
FuGaKyo remains an exceptional sushi and Japanese restaurant that has had decades of consistency. We were a mixed group of 7 with a few vegetarians and several who were a bit spooked by sushi (and others who were all in). Not the easiest to guide us through that. The soup that came with the Sushi platters was spectacular, a rich chicken/mushroom broth that came in a teapot. My table mates had to clean out the teapot!. They divided the sushi nicely onto 3 plates, a good mix, a bit confusing which gyoza were veggie and not--- Don't think we ever got tea. Overall the gang had a great time, but more hiccups than usual.
We showed up earlier than our reservation on a Thursday night, were seated and served immediately.
My wife and I again enjoyed Masaki san’s omakase. He is a very skilled Japanese chef and serves truly authentic sashimi and sushi. Masaki san is a gem!
We were very disappointed by the food, given the very high reference we had received from a good friend. While the avocado and grilled roll was tasteful; the ramen noodle in spicy soup broth left much to be desired. The broth was neither warm nor spicey, and the tempura vegetable average. The best thing I can say about the visit, the calm atmosphere with the many indoor fountains. Our waitress was attentive.
the sushi was fresh and delicious, in a beautiful presentation (Chirashi) and the other folks had mostly cooked food (katsu pork, noodle dishes) and all were tasty and well apportioned. An excellent Japanese restaurant, very much similar to places I have visited in Japan. Will definitely be back!
Wonderful, authentic Japanese setting that allowed for an unhurried and quiet dinner. Vegetarian options were especially delicious.
Amazing sushi!!! Top quality. Great variety including uncommon options. Best sushi in Boston!
I would absolutely recommend this restaurant for the food, but the service was the worst I've had in years. I was so excited to visit my favorite Japanese restaurant in Boston but our waitress was totally absent, flustered, and quite obviously forgotten about us. She ruined the entire experience for us.
Everything was outstanding except the shrimp tempura appetizer was not hot, barely room temperature
I loved all the food! And the old fashioned cocktails I ordered were perfect!
This place is open until 1:30 am every day of the week. Good place to go for a late dinner, especially after a movie.
During the week, Mon to Fri, they have an excellent lunch menu. The best deal is the sushi and sashimi combo.
I guess there was a reason that I've never been to FuGaKyu. It was terrible! We have the delicious JP Seafood in Jamaica Plain for sushi and hold everyone else to that standard. FuGaKyu didn't even hit the bottom level. Everything was gummy. I won't be returning ever!
Very Very underwhelming food and pretty lackluster service.
I love this place the food amazing, service great. I ti always a good choice. It is not cheap but the quality is great
First time there! Amazing sushi! Will be making this a regular spot!
I couldn’t give a five because the management needs to delegate more responsibility to others. The sushi took an hour to be served from the time we ordered.
The nice poor waiter did everything. Too many hosts standing in front doing nothing! Have them fill the water glasses instead of standing in the front not doing much...
Sushi is very fresh. If you go for dinner realize it could take over 90 minutes. Lunch service seems better.
It was great because a quiet week ,otherwise noisy and long wait
My go to Japanese restaurant, never disappoints, simply outstanding
Had a wonderful, multi-generational family celebration. The food and ambiance were excellent. The restaurant was very accommodating of the physical limitations of some of our members. Although our waitress was adequate, she seemed to be less than happy to be helping us.
Always have a good time.
While the food was wonderful, there was one odd non-food related moment. At an adjoining table, there was a question about a gift card. The maitre d' sat down at the empty table between us and used his cell phone to call what was obviously his boss. Wouldn't you agree that he should have handled this call somewhere other than in the dining room? It jarred what was an otherwise serene Japanese experience. Someone should tell him not to do this anymore.
As always, service was outstanding, gracious. Food was fresh and delicious. There is something for everyone on the menu.
One of the best Japanese Restaurants I've been to in any city. Great atmosphere. Great food. Great service. Wonderful food presentation. Planning our return.
Mediocre, pricey, and slow. Bad combination. We used to be devoted Fugaku patrons back in the late 90s early 2000‘s. Food quality really declined after that. I was hopeful that things were on the upswing with the new renovation but found no significant improvement. The quality of the sushi was pretty poor. I wouldn’t mind paying for a better product. Additionally, the service was painfully slow. We won’t be back.
Food is amazing as always.
My wife and I love this restaurant. We just enjoyed a very nice dinner again at the sushi bar, thanks to the Japanese Sushi Chef Masaki-san. He serves super authentic sashimi and sushi as well as other original items that he creates, depending on the availability of ingredients on each day. We think he has brought the restaurant to the next level!
We originally reserved for a table of 9 (a business dinner), after checking in we found two friends can’t come in. After we told the server, they refused to give us the original table, and put our 7 people into a 6 people table. The entire experience was very uncomfortable. The food are mostly overpriced. Very poor dining experience. I will never dine here again.
Restaurant charged us extra for tempura sauce...mind you, not extra sauce. Also, charged us $1 for each small Japanese vegetable leaf for a dish that did not have enough leaves.
Lowlight: Chicken teriyaki was a thick slice of skinless chicken breast with teriyaki sauce poured over it...not marinated...WTH.
Highlights: 1) our server was excellent and apologized for the extra charges, and 2) our booth had sliding shoji doors...like a private tatami room.
Party size: 6
Awesome as usual!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Creative menu with outstanding and sometimes adventurous ingredients, beautifully presented. Service is tops too.
I've been coming to Fugakyu for my entire life and never had a bad experience. We also order takeout/delivery from there on a regular basis. On Saturday night, when we arrived for our reservation, we were brought to a far corner of the upstairs of the restaurant, that I didn't even know existed, which might as well have been a completely different restaurant. The decor and ambiance was awful (highlighted by the blinking LED lights on the walls that were supposed to mimic candles). The room was so quiet, and the tables so near one another, that every table could easily hear every conversation from every other table, which made us want to whisper the entire 90 minutes we were there. It felt like we were sitting in a tacky banquet hall. We love Fugakyu, and there are so many great tables and rooms in the restaurant, but the space where we sat is not one of them, and I would rather not return than ever have to sit up there again.
We had the customized $80 per person with Masaki at the Bar. It was amazing and exceeded all expectations—- on par with being in Tokyo. We will be regulars.
