Was left extremely disappointed by the managers rudeness and inability to rectify her error.
We booked a table after seeing a nice looking set menu online with an offer of 2 courses for £18 or three courses for £20. The food offered on this set menu looked very nice and healthy.
When we arrived at the restaurant and asked for the advertised menu that we had seen online and which was displayed on a wooden poster in front of the restaurant, the waiter told us they had a different set menu which was a drink and a burger.
This is not at all what we wanted to eat and when we challenged the manager about her false advertisement she said she had made a "mistake". So we asked her to honour the advertisement and let us have a two course meal from the menu for £18 which seemed reasonable to us since it was the basis on which we chose to eat at this restaurant.
The manager refused and kept trying to tell us that we should eat the meat terrine. (we are vegetarian).
The least she could have done is thanked us for pointing out their mistake of falsely advertising a better menu and better deal online. We were so outraged by the way she treated us that we left and went to a lovely greek restaurant next door.
Truly disappointed by how this woman dealt with the situation. Will not be recommending the restaurant.
Frontline is a casual restaurant, very busy at linchtime. The food is innovative and tastes great. The menu is rather short and portions are comparatively small. Prices are high for that neighborhood and the service works hard but has difficulties to cope with the high demand at lunchtime. In summary a good place for an easy meal.
Always interesting menu, excellent food, unbeatable proximity to Paddington station (a 3-minute walk).
I booked a table for a birthday dinner via the website. I was forwarded to Open Table. My booking was confirmed by email and I was reminded by email the day before. When I arrived at the restaurant I was informed that there was no booking and that Open Table was unreliable. I should have phoned I was told. I was shown to a tiny Table for two in the middle of the room with nasty hard chairs. All the comfortable tables were booked specifically. I left: neither Open Table nor Frontline comes out well from all this.
Not as good as previous visits. Limited menu options and average food
Always a treat to have lunch in this great little restaurant - set lunch menu is such great value in W London and never disappoints!
Popped in for lunch and had an amazing chicken and mushroom soup, followed by a decent main course. Seat cushions were a bit grubby though. Service was very good.
Four of us met up for dinner at this journalists' club's restaurant and enjoyed our meal very much. The wine list was a tad pricey but the food was excellent (pan roasted sea bream was a highlight as was a generous cheese platter). We recommend the restaurant as a fairly quiet one in which you can actually hear the conversation and not have to shout as at some London restaurants these days.
First time at the Frontline Club, smart restaurant hidden away behind Praed Street. Walked past a few times, always busy. Very nice food although our portions were small. Great value for money and friendly attentive staff. We'll definitely go again!
Very pleasing ambience, elegant and relaxed in one, reliable rather classic food, service natural and perfectly good, plus you can have a conversation.
Just feels like a good place to be. Connected to the world and a little added energy around the big issues always helps provoke a good conversation. Combine this with pleasant, casual, but intelligent service and a very tasty menu and you can't go far wrong!
Excellent food; charming and highly efficient service.
Excellent food as always. Good, imaginative vegetarian options. The hanger steak is a highlight.
Great service, good wine list and a good choice of cocktails.
A useful addition to nice eating around Paddington Station. Lots of fast food joints in the vicinity of the Station and the Hospital, and I have been challenged to find places with decent cooking. Frontline is one. The restaurant is open to the general public despite its title including "Club". We were reasonably pleased with the meal. My gnocci were tasty but my friend was less happy with the burrata. I think we were unfamiliar with some of the dishes' descriptions, and thought the adjective Sardinian meant that Sardines were being offered. This turned out not to be the case! The restaurant took this in its stride and did not charge us for the desserts. The mouvedre red wine was good. We would go again but next time ask for an explanation of what a dish is before we order it.
Excellent food, good selection and kitchen managed to plate perfectly cooked fish amongst the selection of dishes. The Cornish mackerel starter was set up beautifully by the beetroot. Bream was superb. Pig cheeks sublime. Might be better if dishes come complete rather than ordering the (excellent) and creative vegetables. Wine selection very good, but no obvious easy on the pocket house wine. Fondant one of the best by any standard, but the execution of the tarte tartin was not in the same class.
Good food, pleasant atmosphere and enough space between the tables so that we could have a conversation without having to shout or keep our voices down to avoid being overheard. We both had the lamb and root vegetable pie, and it was delicious - tasty, with soft, tender lamb. The mackerel to start was very small and not terribly exciting but all in all it was a good experience.
Terrific spot just off a busy street. Place is modern but is quaint. Everything we had was delicious. So many choices but we highly recommend this place.
Very nice atmosphere, great food, great wine. Definitely recommended.
I enjoyed a delicious meal at The Frontline with an old friend, who's quite a foodie. We both thought all three courses were delicious. I have been a regular to your restaurant with my husband and many friends over the 13 years we've lived nearby, and every visit has been a success. |The staff are always attentive too.
I came back to Frontline because of a positive experience when I first visited in November.
The starter of Cornish mackerel with beetroot and sour cream was perfectly cooked and delicious, as were my main course of lamb and vegetable pie and my friend's steak. They use produce from their own farm in Norfolk whenever possible. The decor is industrial chic with photos from conflict zones on the wall alluding to the restaurant's name. The service was excellent apart from a genuine error in which our order was misplaced. To compensate for this my friend and I were given our two courses, including wine, for free. In light of this unbelievably generous gesture I shall certainly return to dine at Frontline but would have done so anyway for the above reasons.
I'm a frequent business traveler to London (from San Francisco) and just enjoyed my third meal at the Frontline with work colleagues. We reached a unanimous verdict that the food, service and ambience at the Frontline are excellent. Our office is located near Paddington Station, where nearly all the nearby restaurants are poor quality tourist traps. The Frontline is an outstanding exception. We'll be back!
Excellent food and wine in a nice venue, with good service.
Service was great - that balance of attentive but in the background. Great ambience in the decor. Great place for a date, business or catch up. The food was the star of the show. I like to know where my food comes from & the story of the farm in Norfolk supplying the table in Norfolk place is a winner & it shows. Great menu; fresh, so tasty & wonderful seasonal foods. The ceviche of sea bass - stunning as was the lamb & great veggie options. We'll be back.
Very convenient restaurant for Paddington with excellent staff and so much better quality food than the chain eateries that dominate the rest of he area.
Near zero meat on the lamb chop, but otherwise good.
A notable gem in a drab area. Iconic stories adorn the walls, great food, very good value, alert and friendly staff. Return again and again.
Really friendly attentive service in the cultural wasteland that is Paddington. Food was great and the staff coped with dietary requirements with ease. Not great for vegetarians though
Really stylish, comfortable restaurant. Food was delicious, esp fish and chips, portions were massive. Service was friendly and efficient. Would recommend this restaurant, will be back next time we're in London.
I like the atmosphere at the Frontline, and the £12 drink and one course offer before events upstairs is a great deal, but if you're in the mood for a burger you'll probably be disappointed, esp in these days of gourmet burger mania in London- an overly solid patty, lacking flavour, in an unexciting bun. I suggest trying something else - there are three choices in the £12 deal, many more a la carte.
Great restaurant just outside Paddington if you want something different than the usual pub. Good service, good food. Just one thing: some of the portions were very, very small. The risotto covered half the plate while our friend's fish & chips was huge. I don't eat a lot, but even for me it was too small and don't even talk about my husband who ordered the same. We would go back again but would know what to order the next time.
My wife and I ate here on a mid-evening arrival in London before going to our hotel which was in a different part of the capital completely. The restaurant is one block along Praed Street from the main ramp out of Paddington Station. On a Wednesday evening the place was absolutely packed so we considered ourselves lucky to have booked a table earlier that afternoon. Staff were efficient enough and the food was excellent. Most of the restaurants around Paddington are a bit drab, but this place stands out in the area for quality. I wouldn't hesitate to go again.
Good quality food in a convenient location for Paddington station
Used this for an evening meal after returning to Paddington and before continuing to Cambridge. An indoor choice in every way. The service was very friendly, it's just down a side turning so quieter than the main street but above all the food (fish for both of us) was really excellent. The kind of place we would cross London to go to.
The food was undercooked and the staff didn't seem to know what they were doing. Frontline would be better focusing on being a quality wine bar
really good and interesting spot. A journalist club with a restaurant. Been there a few times and food is great, simple and well prepared. Good quality and well presented. Did not have time for a movie and discussion this time!!
First time I had been there. I suspect I may grow to like it more with further visits. Recommended by a long time colleague who goes there a lot. My vegetarian guest was happy with the scope of the options on offer. Food was tasty and well presented.
Tables are quite close together, so not somewhere to go if you have something confidential to discuss but for a day to day business catch up lunch it is ideal.
Good ambience and friendly staff. Well sourced ingredients and great cooking.
We are on a family holiday, and enjoyed the local atmosphere, great food for great value. Will come again
Very conveniently situated for Paddington station. Great pictures on the wall. Good selection of food on the a la carte menu, delicious and well presented. Friendly staff. Will definitely be back to try the other things on the menu.
Very good efficient service - lovely glass of wine. Only one choice for vegetarian but nevertheless very tasty
