About Friend of a Farmer

Since 1986 Friend of a Farmer has been a pioneer in the farm-to-table movement. We’ve created a reputation for seasonally fresh and local ingredients within an atmosphere unlike anything else in New York City.

To provide our guests with a warm familiar feeling found only in the countryside, we’ve carefully crafted and hand built all of the wooden columns, ceilings, floors, and fireplaces.

Our specialty cocktails and homemade juices are all pressed at the farm. The seasonal ingredients, homemade syrups, infused liquors and balanced pours blend beautifully to create a unique and delicious finish.

Our wines are carefully selected and primarily focused around the boutique, family owned vineyards, many of which are sustainable and bio-dynamic.

Thirty later and Friend of a Farmer still remains a family owned business that has stayed true to its roots and concept.

Friend of a Farmer is a great spot for a comfort food dinner, especially festive at the holidays with a fire in the fireplace. I only wish they would take brunch reservations.

They didn’t have the two main dishes we wanted to eat. The chicken pot pie and shepherds pie! So disappointing ! But, they made up for it with their service and cozy atmosphere!

Harvest Crostini (Very Good) - Country Cheese (Good) - Duck Duet (Very Good) - Terry Allan Chicken (OK)

Super homey feel to this restaurant - Bi-Level (we sat upstairs) - Wood Fireplace going upstairs - Has a New England Country House feel to it - Date Spot for sure - Large Portions (2 apps and 2 meals is more than enough for 2 people) - Reasonable Prices - Ok Wine Menu - Argyle Pinot Noir (Very Light) - Quality Ingredients - Was a bit disappointed in the Terry Allan Chicken, but very good meal nonetheless - Service was very good - Farm to table - Known to be packed for brunch on weekends - Was quiet and lower key on a tuesday night starting around 8:45PM

We usually have outstanding attentive service. Tonight, despite a fairly light night of patrons, our server was MIA. In addition, his table side manner was terrible

I should have gotten his name, but he essentially ruined what is usually a great experience

I was very disappointed in my food choice. the duck is not inexpensive and sounds, on the menu, far better than it was. The sauce was quite nice, but there was so little of it. The duck meat was tough, it was overcooked. I asked for meduium and got it well done. the breast meat was certainly edible, although not that enjoyable. The leg that accompanied it was too tough to put either your knife, or teeth into. The rissoto that accompanied it could for sure have been tastier. and I was dissapointed that there was no vegetable accompaniment. The ambiance is quite nice, the service good, but I suggest that they make a few improvments to the menu, such as offering an all vegetable option as an entre. How about some indication, or even offering, some gluten free choices?

We had a fig/ricotta bruschetta and cheese plate appetizer; I had Terry Allen Chicken and my husband had the duck confit. Both were well-prepared. We shared an apple pie which was surprisingly bland. Lovely rooms. Cocktails were okay.

Quiet and cozy. The restaurant has outside section where it was quite comfortable to sit. The area is not too loud and perfect for meeting and talking. Cobb Salad was superb.

Door to restaurant was blocked with shipment and staff didn’t make it very easy to enter. Took forever to get coffee even though there was only one other table. And then the coffee was really terrible. Disappointing.

Our party of 3 visited this restaurant, seeing it listed on Open Table as a “neighborhood gem”. We found it to be less than that. We were ushered past neat displays of colorful fruit and veggies and a lively dining area into a dark attic, the only ones seated in an area with about 6 tables. I’m not kidding when I say the lights were off. Eventually, the server reluctantly agreed to turn them on, as well as to turn off the air that was blasting on a 38 degree, rainy evening. I’m not sure if he had a migraine or if our reservation was too close to closing time, but it was eerily unwelcoming. The food was pretty good. We had the cheese board, split pea soup, pot pie and shrimp pasta. In a different environment, in the light, amongst other diners, I may rate the food more highly, but as it was, it seemed like a last supper of sorts. Not like any neighborhood gem I’m familiar with!

Have eaten here several times before. Enjoyed the atmosphere although food is never really great. This time, the food was fair, the service not good. Although I liked being able to dine outside even in November (heated lamp above tables.) Won't be back.

I'm a VIP member of OpenTable. I made a reservation for 11/2, 11 am, at Friend of a Farmer in NYC and received a notice that it was canceled by the restaurant. I spoke to the restaurant manager, Nadia, who could find no record of my reservation. I made another reservation for 5:30 11/2. I can't modify it and it's in my dining history. Something's wrong at OpenTable or with your connection with Friend of a Farmer. This wastes time that I don't have to waste on such trivialities. This is supposed to make things easier. Not.

Staff was a little late in seating us even though we arrived on time for lunch. I ordered soup and a greek salad with shrimp. The soup was excellent, but the greek salad had very little shrimp (2 pieces) in the salad. The service was good, about what I expected. We ate outside but it was very noisy. I would probably not go outside in future. The restaurant is clean, and the service is good. The food is good as well.

This place is on a really beautiful New York block with a lot of great bars/restaurants. Unfortunately, the food was not good. My boyfriend got a steak with potatoes and I got salad with chicken and both were below average. The shrimp appetizer was great but that was about it. Do not recommend.

The absolute best place ever to have Brunch! I discovered 'Friend of a Farmer' back in 2015 and have been a huge fan ever since. Too bad I can only enjoy it when I plan a trip to NYC... I live in Europe!

Our waiter was fantastic and I'm sorry I didn't catch his name. This was my first time for dinner but had been for brunch previously and the food was stellar both times. My dad and I got the Steak special with broccoli and mashed potatoes and my mom got the Terry Allen Chicken which she said was phenomenal. The Corn Brad they bring to the table was so good I could have eaten a whole pan of that!! I highly recommend this restaurant for any meal.

Enjoyed our meal, the service and the decor. Unfortunately we were sat in a corner at a table inches from a loud pair that made it difficult for us to have conversation. A table by the window would have made for a better experience.

Met a friend for breakfast at 8:30 in the morning. We only had an hour and the waitress was very accommodating. She checked back to make sure we had everything we needed and brought us the check with enough notice to be sure we were out on time.

Ordered an omelet and was pleased to know that you can choose to substitute the potatoes with either a side salad or fruit. Great to not have to use willpower to ignore the potatoes. The coffee was served in a press pot.

Was thrilled to be able to make a reservation through Open Table for this restaurant and not leave it all to chance.

The upstairs area is cozy and warm. The food was wonderful. I had the short rib and my girlfriend had the crab cakes. Both were very good. Service was slower than I expected, especially given the fact that it wasn't particularly busy when we went. Overall I highly recommend it!
