This was a celebration dinner for us - and we weren't disappointed! Every plate was incredibly good! Grilled octopus for an appetizer - the venison, diver scallops, filet and short ribs as entree's - Sancere for the dinner wine - we were beyond impressed. The service was impeccable - ambiance wonderful. We'll be back! And we'll suggest to friends !
The crab cakes were amazing and the pot pie was more than I could eat!!! Delicious Farm to Table restaurant! The wait staff were friendly, knowledgeable and very hospitable! We will be back!
Service was terrible. Waiters continued to bump into us. Finally, they moved our table a bit so that the waiters didn’t bump into us while serving other tables.
Food was mediocre. Nothing great. Brunch is better. Won’t come back for dinner.
Noise level was horrible. Way too many people / too crowded overall.
The overall ambiance was frenetic.
Great food and service!
Our disappointing evening began when we were led to a small table overlooking a sad piece of wallpaper. One chair was broken. It was exchanged with one from another table, not taken out of circulation. It didn't matter since even an intact chair wobbled around every time someone walked by, which was often.
For our first course, we shared a $15 salad which had sounded delicious. Ingredients included a single apple slice carefully carved into six pieces, what appeared to be one or two beets cubed, and a tiny chunk of blue cheese that must have been blasted with an atom smasher order for it to be sprinkled around the entire side of the plate. Our entrees had so much garlic and salt in them the dishes could have been farm to table or fresh from the freezer.
The one bright spot was our waiter, who couldn't have been nicer or more cautious about food allergies. I'm only sorry he doesn't work in a better restaurant.
Chef and our server worked well together to deliver a vegan meal for me, appreciate.
Very charming venue, relaxed atmosphere. Attentive service. None of that compares with the absolutely unbelievably amazing food. Don’t leave this place without trying the crostini appetizer. We also had the Parmesan shrimp which was really great, and the duck- fantastic- and the shepherds pie- to die for.
Food took so long to come out that it affected the overall experience
omelette was dry, overdone. ambience nice but food , having been there several times, not good enough
Outstanding healthy menu and amazing service. Can't wait for outdoors seating!
I love coming here with my mom every time she’s in town! The food is always excellent. Such a fun place to go to.
In a sea of ultra-modern restaurants, Friend of a Farmer is cozy (and not in that "cozy = small" sense) and warm. The exposed wood is fantastic and, just, in general, the atmosphere is mad romantic. The staff is helpful, friendly, and competent and the food is absolutely delicious. While everything was very good, the crab cakes were a stand-out in terms of how severely they outperform most others. The freshness and quality of the ingredients is accenting fantastically by the kitchen, which does a great job while not overdoing anything. All-in-all a fab place for a special occasion. I hear brunch is great, too, though it sounds like a absurdly busy.
Brilliant! Excellent balance of food and atmosphere!
I love the breakfast here. Even though I reserve a table, I usually sit at the bar. The place makes me feel right at home and I feel comfortable having my coffee and browsing the internet on my phone.
We waited for our dinners for at least 45 minutes after our salad was eaten . Our server came back to say your dinners will be out soon, 5 minutes before they came out. They missed our side order and brought that when our dinners were 80% eaten- 15 -20 minutes later. He put it on the table with no apologies and I told him to take it back , we were nearly done. Probably took it back to the kitchen and threw it out.
I still don’t think our bill was correct. $200 for 1 salad, 3 entrees and drinks. Lots of drink tho bc we waited so long
A real disappointment. We’ve been to the Brooklyn location snd service was great. Oh and the busers. Stood and starred at us our entire time there.
Surprised and disappointed that with a 7:30pm reservation on a Saturday evening FofF were out of THREE primary entrees - braised beef, duck and crab cakes. This should not happen at such a great restaurant.
We asked to move table because we were sitting in private party section on our own. We wanted to sit in main dining room. We were told no because they needed to spread the tables among the wait staff. Should have been more concerned with making us happy.
Food and service were wonderful. Loved the fireplace especially on a cold day!
Service glacial. We were seated 30 min before water, 45 before bread came. Good thing my dinner company was charming because this place was not.
I had never been here and I'll definitely go back! I met a friend here for a catch up at 6pm - the restaurant was pretty empty but by the time we left (8pm) it was booked solid.
We shared the Avocado tartare appetizer after our waiter suggested it and it was delicious! I had the Salmon which was cooked to perfection and served over a whole grain and Butternut squash.
Seems like a good date spot...the waiters are attentive and not at all pushy.
We decided to dine here for my mother's birthday dinner, noted it on the reservation, and it was acknowledged when we first sat down. That's where it all went downhill. My parent's don't drink (as a reminder, there are people in this world who can't drink or don't enjoy drinking) but the moment the server realized that we weren't going to be ordering a bunch of alcohol, and that we were ordering the mid-level mains the service went out the window - HORRIBLE. My boyfriend and I each ordered a *courtesy* drink knowing it helps the bill, but not necessarily needing it. Plates were dumped in front of us and my poor mother was left EATING ALONE because they'd cleared the rest of the plates from in front of us as we were taking our last bite. Imagine that - eating alone on your birthday. For some background, my mother works 365 days a year. My dad can't work any longer because of health reasons and my mother is the primary provider and will likely have to be for the remainder of her life - no retirement. Them even coming into the city was a big deal let along this restaurant. She wouldn't spend any money on herself but we insisted on taking her somewhere for dinner to enjoy her birthday. She does everything with a smile on her face and assumes the best in everyone - she should never have been treated this way. When they brought the dessert out, they ASKED US to start singing and plopped it in front of her. It was rude, embarrassing and I'm mortified that my mother was treated this way on her birthday. TO THE RESTAURANT AS A REMINDER YOU ARE SERVING *PEOPLE* WHO ARE *HUMAN* WITH REAL STRUGGLES AND REAL LIVES - treat everyone with respect and like you're grateful to be serving them. We *chose* to spend this dinner with you and I will never go or recommend you again.
Lovely place, food was good, service a little over-exuberant, but sadly there are many stairs to get to the seating area, so I won't be returning.
Excellent food and service. Will definitely return when I am in the city.
Awesome all around
Consistently delicious & always cozy ♥️♥️♥️
I took my three kids on a special trip to the city. They went out of their way to provide an option for my picky eater. (Doesn’t seem to be a place that often has young diners.) Service was excellent. Shepard’s pie was so hot it took about 20 minutes to cool off enough to eat. It was great, but that’s just too hot. Crab cake was perfect and almost all crab, as described in the menu. We weren’t rushed, and were seated immediately (had a reservation) Pleased overall and will definitely return.
THsnks for the great svcs and a fantastic date it was.
Great food but didn’t have multiple items on the menu.
Everything was fabulous. Even though the restaurant is small, we were given a great table upstairs.
Good food at decent prices (for NYC). I took 2 of my co-workers out for a treat and we enjoyed ourselves! I wish we could have taken advantage of the yummy craft cocktails - if only it weren't a work day.
Amazing food, definitely big portions and really interesting combinations. Come hungry and do not skip out on harvest crostini, lamb and duck
Excellent place to meet a business partner who is also a friend. Gorgeous farm-to-table menu and attentive but not cloying service. Atmosphere feels upstate. Warm. Cozy...okay a little close to the other tables, but everyone is friendly here.
Great food, reasonably priced, friendly & helpful staff. My first visit & will definitely be back.
Great experience but there was a draft in the upstairs dining room by the window. Understandably it was a very cold night.
Such a romantic spot and delicious food. The apple pie for 2 was a real treat. Our server, Louie, was very helpful. We will be back.
Food was ok‘ish, mothing really outstanding. Service so lala
Got a great seat upstairs near the fireplace, It was a first date and we weren't there to eat a full dinner and neither date or I drink so our order wasn't going to be expensive. We decided to go with the avocado toast and split the chicken entree. The waiter said the chicken is small, mind you the cost was $30+ so I don't think stating it was small was the right way for him to suggest we order something more. When the chicken arrived it was a proper 1 serving if not larger being a nice sized breast without a bone over mashed potatoes, which was perfect for the both of us considering we were both not that hungry. The avocado toast was as expected.
Great, cozy dining experience. Great for the winter. Nice bar. Good food, especially the duck confit.
Rustic, cozy setting, appreciated on a frigid December day. Food is superb - no other word to describe it. We had brunch: my husband had an omelette, I had eggs benedict, but the version with salmon instead of bacon/ham. Both dishes exquisite. We ordered drinks, and they were marvelous. The service was just okay. Server didn't ask if we needed salt and pepper. We did, and we had to go hunting for it ourselves. Also, I ordered tea afterwards, with the flourless chocolate cake, which we shared and which was wonderful. The tea never came, but then he showed up, after we'd finished the cake, to say they were out of Earl Gray. Too late, I said. But I would have gladly chosen another type of tea if he had let us know in a timely manner.
the food was AMAZING! I took my mom to a bunch of places during her visit here- and this place was by far her favorite!!
