About Friend of a Farmer

Since 1986 Friend of a Farmer has been a pioneer in the farm-to-table movement. We’ve created a reputation for seasonally fresh and local ingredients within an atmosphere unlike anything else in New York City.

To provide our guests with a warm familiar feeling found only in the countryside, we’ve carefully crafted and hand built all of the wooden columns, ceilings, floors, and fireplaces.

Our specialty cocktails and homemade juices are all pressed at the farm. The seasonal ingredients, homemade syrups, infused liquors and balanced pours blend beautifully to create a unique and delicious finish.

Our wines are carefully selected and primarily focused around the boutique, family owned vineyards, many of which are sustainable and bio-dynamic.

Thirty later and Friend of a Farmer still remains a family owned business that has stayed true to its roots and concept.

I love the breakfast here. Even though I reserve a table, I usually sit at the bar. The place makes me feel right at home and I feel comfortable having my coffee and browsing the internet on my phone.

We waited for our dinners for at least 45 minutes after our salad was eaten . Our server came back to say your dinners will be out soon, 5 minutes before they came out. They missed our side order and brought that when our dinners were 80% eaten- 15 -20 minutes later. He put it on the table with no apologies and I told him to take it back , we were nearly done. Probably took it back to the kitchen and threw it out.
I still don’t think our bill was correct. $200 for 1 salad, 3 entrees and drinks. Lots of drink tho bc we waited so long
A real disappointment. We’ve been to the Brooklyn location snd service was great. Oh and the busers. Stood and starred at us our entire time there.

Surprised and disappointed that with a 7:30pm reservation on a Saturday evening FofF were out of THREE primary entrees - braised beef, duck and crab cakes. This should not happen at such a great restaurant.

We asked to move table because we were sitting in private party section on our own. We wanted to sit in main dining room. We were told no because they needed to spread the tables among the wait staff. Should have been more concerned with making us happy.

I had never been here and I'll definitely go back! I met a friend here for a catch up at 6pm - the restaurant was pretty empty but by the time we left (8pm) it was booked solid.

We shared the Avocado tartare appetizer after our waiter suggested it and it was delicious! I had the Salmon which was cooked to perfection and served over a whole grain and Butternut squash.

Seems like a good date spot...the waiters are attentive and not at all pushy.

We decided to dine here for my mother's birthday dinner, noted it on the reservation, and it was acknowledged when we first sat down. That's where it all went downhill. My parent's don't drink (as a reminder, there are people in this world who can't drink or don't enjoy drinking) but the moment the server realized that we weren't going to be ordering a bunch of alcohol, and that we were ordering the mid-level mains the service went out the window - HORRIBLE. My boyfriend and I each ordered a *courtesy* drink knowing it helps the bill, but not necessarily needing it. Plates were dumped in front of us and my poor mother was left EATING ALONE because they'd cleared the rest of the plates from in front of us as we were taking our last bite. Imagine that - eating alone on your birthday. For some background, my mother works 365 days a year. My dad can't work any longer because of health reasons and my mother is the primary provider and will likely have to be for the remainder of her life - no retirement. Them even coming into the city was a big deal let along this restaurant. She wouldn't spend any money on herself but we insisted on taking her somewhere for dinner to enjoy her birthday. She does everything with a smile on her face and assumes the best in everyone - she should never have been treated this way. When they brought the dessert out, they ASKED US to start singing and plopped it in front of her. It was rude, embarrassing and I'm mortified that my mother was treated this way on her birthday. TO THE RESTAURANT AS A REMINDER YOU ARE SERVING *PEOPLE* WHO ARE *HUMAN* WITH REAL STRUGGLES AND REAL LIVES - treat everyone with respect and like you're grateful to be serving them. We *chose* to spend this dinner with you and I will never go or recommend you again.

I took my three kids on a special trip to the city. They went out of their way to provide an option for my picky eater. (Doesn’t seem to be a place that often has young diners.) Service was excellent. Shepard’s pie was so hot it took about 20 minutes to cool off enough to eat. It was great, but that’s just too hot. Crab cake was perfect and almost all crab, as described in the menu. We weren’t rushed, and were seated immediately (had a reservation) Pleased overall and will definitely return.

Good food at decent prices (for NYC). I took 2 of my co-workers out for a treat and we enjoyed ourselves! I wish we could have taken advantage of the yummy craft cocktails - if only it weren't a work day.

Got a great seat upstairs near the fireplace, It was a first date and we weren't there to eat a full dinner and neither date or I drink so our order wasn't going to be expensive. We decided to go with the avocado toast and split the chicken entree. The waiter said the chicken is small, mind you the cost was $30+ so I don't think stating it was small was the right way for him to suggest we order something more. When the chicken arrived it was a proper 1 serving if not larger being a nice sized breast without a bone over mashed potatoes, which was perfect for the both of us considering we were both not that hungry. The avocado toast was as expected.

Rustic, cozy setting, appreciated on a frigid December day. Food is superb - no other word to describe it. We had brunch: my husband had an omelette, I had eggs benedict, but the version with salmon instead of bacon/ham. Both dishes exquisite. We ordered drinks, and they were marvelous. The service was just okay. Server didn't ask if we needed salt and pepper. We did, and we had to go hunting for it ourselves. Also, I ordered tea afterwards, with the flourless chocolate cake, which we shared and which was wonderful. The tea never came, but then he showed up, after we'd finished the cake, to say they were out of Earl Gray. Too late, I said. But I would have gladly chosen another type of tea if he had let us know in a timely manner.

On a very cold winter night, this place is not well heated. It's an old building with thin windows, so it's understandable. But if you don't like cold places , this is not the place for you. It was very quiet at the restaurant for a 6:30pm reservation which was a nice change for NYC restaurants. But then a large and loud party came in and it got loud fast and my party struggled to hear each other. The quarters are tiny so we were constantly moving out seats to let servers get through to other tables. Service was fast and friendly even though the space was very cramped and hard for people to work in. The food was okay for dinner, skip the terry chicken, nothing to rave about .

 (Montreal)·Dined on December 25, 2017

I made a reservation for December 25th, for party of 5 (finaly 7)for Christmas, at 7pm !

At first, the service was very good !

We were in the mood for celebrating all together for this special occasion, in NYC (we are from Montreal, Canada).

I have to admitt that I wasn't too impressed about the food. I had the duck and risotto. Risotto was flavorless. However, that didn't stop me to enjoy my evening.

Around 10pm, we asked our waiter if we could have a drink at the bar downstairs and he said yes.
I think he was happy to hear that, because he could give us the final bill and leave (we were his last client).
At this moment, our waiter (I think his name was Eric) starts to be rude and arrogant.
I don't know if it was because we had fun with other waiters...Miah and Kavin ! They were so funny and nice with us !

We told our waiter that we were from Montreal and we talked a little bit and made jokes !
And then, he told us regardadring the service, saying that it is not included on the bill and the recommendation is between 18% to 20%. We said that we were awared of that.

My friend asked to pay with 3 different credit cards and he asked if he could add the 20% of service...That was impolite and unprofessionnal. Waiters are supposed to leave at the client's discretion and not to impose the % for the service.
Anyways, we didn't want to make a big deal with that.

So we paid and asked AGAIN if it was okay to have a drink at the bar downstairs.
He said yes and said that the bartender was waiting for us !
Before going downstairs, we stoped to take some pictures in front of the fireplace, it was so beautiful !

5 minutes after, Kavin the waiter came and told us that the bar was closed !
How funny is that ?! The bar is open and 5 minutes after, it's closed ?
Really ?

They litteraly kicked us out of the restaurant.

This situation is UNACCEPTABLE.

And for those reasons, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant at all and this is really too bad.

Very bad experience.

Food and service was best I have experienced in New York. If you are very hungry I recommend the Chicken Pot Pie - tip order some bread to dip in the pie - which is cooked around a pot so you can pick the side of pastry straight off.

Our waitress was fun and joyful, especially for someone working on Christmas day. The restaurant is very cosy and was very festive.

The only negative is that the tables are very close together. Perfect for eavesdropping but if your looking for a private occassion this is not it.

This place is worth a visit for the quality of locally sourced food alone but it has plenty of character and charm to match.

Have to say, we were a little disappointed! No doubt, the food all tastes great. We had the shrimp appetizer, shepherd's pie, and braised short ribs. The shrimp appetizer, for $15, came with three shrimp. 1.5 shrimps per person?

Cornbread came, pre-appetizer, covered in a cold sugar/cinnamon apple topping. Tasted like super sweet dessert. Tasty, but dessert. We asked if we could have a little butter to spread on the cornbread instead, and we received an ice cold block of butter. Try spreading ice cold butter on cornbread.

I ordered the signature martini and it was poured tableside, but it came up about a half inch shy of the rim of the glass. In a martini glass that's like 1/4 of the drink missing. For $16?

The entrees were tasty. In total we had four drinks, the bill with tip was $180. For a $180 meal in NY (although, perhaps not in Gramercy...) I've come to expect a lot better quality.

Also, it was my date's 26th birthday, which we put in the reservation notes, but this was never mentioned or acknowledged by the restaurant in any way.
