Fried Green Tomatoes
PLEASE NOTE: We are a multi-level dining facility in a historic downtown building. For the dining enjoyment for all of our guests, we do not provide highchairs or booster seats.
We try our best to accommodate your requests but we do not guarantee certain tables.
Nice atmosphere, great service, but hit or miss food. Fried Green Tomatoes were drenched in cheese & sauce to the point couldn't taste tomatoes. Steak & Shrimp was good but Shrimp Diavalo had no heat & sauce tasted straight out of a can.
Service was poor, lack of timely effort to bring our food on time. We waited forty mins for our food and the server didn’t make an effort to compensate our wait.
I felt rushed. Our entree was delivered well before we finished our salad. Perhaps our server was just a little too attentive! Otherwise, a very good experience!
We have been visiting Galena a couple times a year for several years and Fried Green Tomatoes always has been our favorite. It’s never a question of if we will have dinner there on every trip, only a question of which night we will go. Until our most recent visit, we always have been seated on the main floor and would give a five star review. But, this time, we were seated up on the top level, which was a major disappointment. That level has none of the nice ambiance of the lower level (not sure what the mid-level is like for seating), it is much louder, and service not as good. I’m guessing the service is not as good due to the servers needing to go farther for items. A key example is, our forks were taken away after finishing our appetizer and then after finishing our salads. That’s standard. Then our entrees were served, no new forks. So we waited several minutes with our entrees cooling in front of us until we received new forks. Also took an unusually long time to get drinks served.
This also seems to be the “big party” floor, two long tables were set up for about 12 people each. That makes the noise issue even worse. We were even joking at the table that the food should be less expensive on that floor because it’s not an experience in keeping with the prices like the experience on the main floor. We will return, but will request a main level table. Even if we had to wait beyond our reservation time, it’s worth it.
We had the filet mignon and it was excellent. The bread is something we always enjoy and the salad dressing is wonderful. We were disappointed with the fried green tomatoes. We've been enjoying them since the restaurant was at their previous location away from town and they always had a very delicate bread crumb topping. This time they seemed like they came out of a frozen bag. The topping split away from the tomato when you tried to cut it and it seemed much more like it was just dipped in batter. There didn't seem to be a lot of flavor to them either. I'm sure we will try them again next year but if they are the same as they were this year we will stop ordering them and go without an appetizer.
It was excellent
Wonderful food and service
Outstanding service, food wonderful! It was a tad loud, but I think it was a large group just having fun. If I am ever back to Galena, I will be visiting Fried Green Tomatoes!!
In the past loved Fried Green Tomatoes but this visit we were seated in a highly trafficked area that ruined our dining experience. Thought maybe there were no other tables available but after we were able to see through flow of people walking by saw we could have been seated at a nicer table. Had noted it was our anniversary on reservation but apparently it was considered only a special evening for us.
We have dined here on numerous trips. We ate an early dinner before going to the magic show. We were stuck at a table for 2 on the upper level. The table felt more like an afterthought than an actual seat. The food was ok, it has been better on other visits and the salad with black olives and raspberry vinaigrette was odd but so was the messy big piece of bread. Service was good and we had a reservation so no waiting. But, I will probably eat elsewhere on my next visit.
We only had appetizers. 1.The crab cakes...all breading the size of sea scallops and served cold. 2. Fried green tomatoes, their specialty, were horrible. The tomatoes were hard, lot of breading. We had to literally scrape the bottom of the plate for the marinara sauce. 3. The beef carpaccio seemed like it was one piece of beef sliced from a rump roast. You needed you knife to cut pieces from it. 4. The shrimp salad consisted of 4 boiled shrimp on top of a bed of lettuce. It was supposed to come with goat cheese and pecans, which we did not discover until we actually plated our salads. The amount of goat cheese and pecans were in tiny, tiny, pieces on the bottom of the bowl. Needless to say we did not finish our "dinner". The best part of our dinner was the bread and we had to ask for it! What a disappointment this restaurant was.
Awesome as usual
We were only in Galena for one night and always make reservations at Fried Green Tomatoes. The food was outstanding, as always, the service professional and cordial. We enjoyed a very warm, inviting ambiance that we have come to both expect and look forward to.
Service was too good, not giving us sufficient time to complete a course before the next one was served. The food was unbelievably good so certainly deserved our full focus. The servers were excellent though, very attentive and made sure our needs were met.
We had a group of 6 at Fried Green Tomatoes on Sunday night. It was a great experience with a few exceptions. The server was very friendly and attentive, although she didn't inquire about any food preferences (one person didn't eat dairy and doesn't eat garlic). The appetizer of Fried Green Tomatoes surprised us all....it was like eggplant Parmesan with a heavy dose of tomato sauce. We all had eaten FGT at other restaurants, and they were a lighter batter and lighter frying. One person ordered the Crab Cake salad and she was disappointed in the crab cake (mostly filler). The espresso steak was excellent and the Chilean Seabass was superb. All in all, it was a great experience. I would recommend the restaurant to a friend with the above caveats.
Food and service were outstanding as usual. Filet mignon is the best in the area.
Had a great time and our waitress was wonderful. Good food and an inviting atmosphere.
Everything about dinner was wonderful! We are planning on eating there again next time we are in town!
Excellent Food and Wine
First time at Fried Green Tomatoes and hopefully not our last! We were thrilled with all of our choices and the quality of the food. Highly recommend!
Excellent food and friendly staff.
Dined here for our Anniversary and it was lovely in all respects. Ambiance was the perfect blend of rustic chic, with exposed brick and crystal chandeliers. Dimly lit but not too dark. Great wine specials and exquisite food. My husband had cedar planked walleye and I had the Chilean sea bass. Both were melt in your mouth delicious and wild caught. A luscious creme brûlée topped off a perfect meal. Our waiter, Erik, was excellent as well. We give it a resounds two thumbs up! 👍🏻👍🏻
Food was excellent. Wait staff attentive.
A lovely restaurant, in an historic setting. The ambiance was perfect! The menu was diverse, with many appealing options. I chose the lobster ravioli, which was wonderful. The staff was very friendly. I would recommend this restaurant. Prices are a bit high for a family dining experience, but this would be a good location for a couple's night out, or just a good place to meet with a friend.
Fried Green Tomatoes was very good. The waitress was excellent. She explained the specials and a question about one of the dishes a person had very well. We had a party of 7 and she gave us separate checks, which was very nice. Several people had the special, steak with a crab cake. They said the crab cake was a little dry, but very tasty. Salmon was excellent. The pork shank was just okay (per one of the ladies in our group). Overall a good experience. We would go again.
Jessie was our waitress. She was very in tune with what we wanted and extremely quick about. Incredible food! Best steak I’ve had in years. Definitely a great place for dinner. Pricey but, worth every dime. Again, thanks to Jessie for some of the best service we’ve had in along time.
Always reliably good, Fried Green Tomatoes came through again. We shared the generous caprese salad as an appetizer, and also enjoyed a split of the romaine wedge. The Mile-high Meatloaf was a repeat pleaser for my spouse and I enjoyed the expresso steak for the first time. I’ll be doing that again. Our guests enjoyed the sea bass and plain filet, complimented with mushrooms. We will be back again soon.
Our fish and steak was very good, full of flavors, however I'm disappointed with the lack of any vegetables on the plate for the price you pay. My steak came with one small potato and I was hoping to see at least some greenery as decoration.
Very nice restaurant, the food was excellent and so was the service
From the staff, to the food, to the atmosphere, everything was on point. I thought the value was great and the service was fantastic!
Fried Green never disappoints. The food was wonderful and the service was great.
We celebrated a very special anniversary at Fried Green Tomatoes and were not disappointed! Our food was delicious and well prepared, service was great and we even had a visit from one of the managers during our meal to congratulate us. We would definitely dine at FGT on our next visit to Galena!
Food and service was outstanding. Can't visit Galena without Fried Green Tomatoes.
Great food, service and atmosphere. Nice menu with many great choices. Always a pleasure to dine there.
We have been going to Galena for our anniversary for a few years now and always have dinner at Fried Green Tomatoes. We have never been disappointed. The food was excellent. The service was impeccable. Since it was Friday we got an excellent bottle of wine for half price. My wife started with their soup of the day and I had the house salad. Both were very good. We then shared an order of crab cakes and the lobster ravioli dinner. We enjoyed both. They then provided a complimentary dessert for our anniversary. We will be going back again next year.
Food was so great and portions were just right. Not too much not too little. We really enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant and our server, molly, was really great! Very friendly, helpful and attentive.
Overall very good. Big bar crowd due $3/glass of wine Wednesdays. Food and service were both solid. Ambiance is rustic/historic chic. Busy center of town scene. Cocktail and wine pours were generous.
Always a very enjoyable dining experience. The food is very good, great atmosphere and nice service. I ordered the pork rib eye which was excellent. I substituted the red potatoes for garlic mashed potatoes but it would have been nice to have a vegetable to balance the meal. My wife ordered salmon which also was excellent but again she would have enjoyed some rice with the meal. My favorite Galena restaurant.
I ordered my favorite dinner - the expresso filet. The filet was good, as usual, but the mashed potatoes were very salty. Please have the chef taste his potatoes before serving. Otherwise, our meal was delish!
This was my5th dinner I've enjoyed at Fried Green Tomatoes and they have never disappointed me.
The service and food have always been top notch. The staff is so polite and attentive. Keep up the excellent attention to detail.
