Fresca - West Portal Ratings and Reviews
Booked a table in advance, arrived 5 minutes early and were told that our table would be 5 minutes.
Cut to 25 minutes later, still standing in the crowded hallway, with nobody offering us a drink or telling us to go to a bar nearby and they will call us when the table is ready.
Overall food was poor for the price. We had a drink, a ceviche to share, and two main courses. Total came to over $100. Usually not a big deal but the food lacked flavor. Come on, you're Peruvian food, how can you prepare the steak well done and the chips undercooked?
Poor on all fronts.
When Fresca opened many years ago on Fillmore, it was a wonderful, friendly and unique spot with great food. In recent times, it's honestly unexciting.
I had the quinoa/squash stew. The lunch menu listed it as a lunch special that came with soup or salad. The ingredients listed queso fresco.
The stew arrived luke warm, with no sign of the cheese. The waiter brought cheese on the side at my request. Flavors were meh. Didn't see the waiter again until I was done with the stew. I asked about the salad. He said that since I hadn't asked for one, he didn't think I wanted it. Really?
Not worth the $15 lunch price, especially with other good alternatives in West Portal. Sorry Fresca, time to wake up to the what you're really delivering and stop relying on past reputation.
I scheduled a reservation through OpenTable, but when we arrived at Fresca the hostess said she could not find the reservation on file. She was able to make room and gave us a table for 1 hour, but after our meal she came over twice to remind us that we only have the table reserved for 1 hour and will have to leave. Not sure if it was OpenTable's or Fresca's fault. Food was delicious. Noise level was quite loud so not the best for conversation.
The staff members of Fresca were very accommodating and patient with us. We had a party of six but two family members had yet to confirm whether they would show up. Although Fresca is a small restaurant, the staff was very willing to save another table and seats for us. They allowed their customers to bring their own wine and their dishes were great! It was my first time having this type of of cuisine but a member of our party said it was pretty authentic.
My friend and I both had TRUCHA ENCEBOLLADA, of skillet roasted Idaho trout, shrimp, onion, tomato, cilantro, white rice. It was absolutely delicious, served in a black cast iron pan sizzling in the juices. Sweet onions and tomato on top. You just want to soak up all the juices with the white rice. We each ordered a glass of white wine to go with our lunch and it was a hardy pour in a good sized wine glass. I would definitely go back again and probably have the same dish.
The food was delicious and the portions were generous! Three of us ordered two salads and the stuffed trout all to shared. Everything was so good that we ate every morsel. The staff was accommodating with our sharing and gave us small plates. I would ask for larger plates next time. Fresca is in my neighborhood so I will definitely return!
Peruvian specials are great. Don't bother with the Paella--it was bland and soupy and not worth the price! The service was so-so--seemed frantic, and we had three or more different servers. better to know who is really taking care of you. I kept thinking that maybe they were short-staffed that night, but maybe this is the way it always is (I hadn't been there in years.)
A very noisy place when it's packed with diners. It's a small size restaurant and when there are groups (6 or more) the volume makes it difficult to have a conversation with friends across the table. We like their Sangria but as the years go by, they have been less generous with the fruit they put into the pitcher, $30. I always order the lomo saltado, my favorite dish there. Such that I never try anything else on the menu. I had a taste of my friend's paella, very good. A nice neighborhood restaurant. Be sure to make reservations during peak dining hours.
Fresca is a great neighborhood restaurant. The food is Peruvian and it is delicious. Our favorite is the loma saltado -- marinated beef with tomatoes, onions and French fries over rice. The roast chicken is also good. Service is very friendly. Can't wait to go back.
We chose the West Portal one for location. We were looking for a brunch spot, which Fresca claimed to be. Sadly, when we arrived, we found out they no longer serve brunch. How about updating your profile people!! The service was okay. The food was delicious...as always.
