The very serious formal service I associate with French dining makes me uncomfortable, which is why I loved this restaurant. Relaxed, prompt, unpretentious, yet knowledgeable service paired with great food, wines at a great price point and a wonderful staff made this one of my favorite meals in a long time, for a shockingly reasonable price.

Starting with the twenty minutes it took the wait staff to notice us at the bar, ending with one of the worst meals we have ever had, this restaurant should be taken off Open Table. Food was "Continental Cuisine" at the best, wait staff seemed to be taken off the street, atmosphere was dismal … nothing to say but TERRIBLE!

Friendly, welcoming service from the first step into the door. Made to order Bloody Mary was delicious with just the right amount of spiciness. Crepes equally delicious and generously portioned. We had a delightful time on our first experience. Already planning to return.

Had a wonderful dining experience. Although their credit card machine wasn't working when we arrived, they were very accomodating and even told diners where the closet ATM was located. The food was delicious and the portions were quite healthy for a French restaurant! Will definitely be going back again!

Moules M. were the most blan I have ever had, over the last 60 years. No wine flavor, no garlic favor. I did ask that no additional salt be added, but the waiter never told me that would mean they would be in a bland stock.

Service unconventional, but good, as it felt like we were having dinner at someone's home.
It also felt like a neighborhood corner.
The food was quite good and reasonable.
I would definitely go back.

Have been going to Frere de Lys since it opened. It's a great addition to the neighborhood, small and friendly with wonderful food and very attentive owners and staff. They also make a great martini!

I dont know if the french just like their food dry and burnt, but that was my experience. The chicken we got was dry and the honey cake had burnt portions. The place is pricey and I would not recommend it. Even if the food was cheaper, I would not recommend it. It is not inedible but there are tons of better places.

Although the service was friendly, the food was sub-par. The salmon tartine was recommended by my server (one of the owners) and was nothing more than very hard crusty bread, cream cheese, and a thin layer of smoked salmon. My lamb (also recommended) was overcooked and bland. And there were a variety of things that went wrong - out of coffee (how does that even happen?), out of the dessert I ordered off the menu, and credit card was run for the wrong amount. I had very high expectations, but was sorely disappointed :(

Have been wanting to go here for a year and finally got there. The two guys who run the place are accommodating, cheerful, helpful and make the dining experience there a really nice experience. The menu is very limited which I understand since it's a small place and they want to keep control over the quality. However, it is difficult for me with the lack of choice. The portobello appetizer was delicious but very small. I ordered salmon which was tasty as were the vegetables but I didn't like the rice which I think had celantro in it. My husband had the lamb which everyone raves about but there was some spice on it, that I didn't love. He really enjoyed it however. The chocolate tarte was too dense for my taste but we spoke to an adjoining table who loved it. I'd return for the service and the convenience of location but I would like to see an expansion of the menu. Maybe I'll try brunch.

I made a reservation for 11:00 only to get there and find out that they don't open until 11:30. The waiter was kind of an arrogant French type...it really reminded me of how bad Americans are treated in Paris.

Overall, food was ok. I would not come back. There are better brunch places in the UES

Just when I think they couldn't possibly serve higher quality food (it is literally breathtaking) or provide better service, they somehow deliver. I feel it is impossible to be disappointed with a meal here. I've longed for authentic french food since leaving Paris, and I've finally found it in my quaint neighborhood. It has a nice, unpretentious local feel to it, you're treated like family, and the food is always that highest level of satisfying. The prices are a little more than I like to usually spend, but then again I've often spent much more for much less. I'll be back often.

The restaurant showed as available on Open Table and we booked it for Mother's Day dinner, for a large party, specifically traveling from Washington Heights to Upper East Side. 15 minutes before the reserved time, the restaurant called me to inform me that they forgot to update availability on Open Table and they are in fact fully booked. That left us with a party of 9 scrambling for a place to find a dinner venue on a very busy evening. I was disappointed.

This was my 4th time to dine here--1 brunch which was great and 3rd dinner which was also very good. This is a true neighborhood gem. The 2 brothers who are the owners go out of their way to make you feel welcome and offer wonderful suggestions for wine and entrees.
Their personalities make this spot a hit! It is a small restaurant with a somewhat limited menu but everything I have ordered was served as it should be with enough follow up during the meal but not obtrusive. They make you feel very welcome, serve very good food with great wine selections making you want to return!

This is the perfect place for drinks. The two brothers who run the place can't do enough to make you feel welcome. Even during the week, the place is packed with good people. While the toasted bread is good, the food doesn't live up to the great vibe of the place. Some of the food comes out cold, while other food comes out well done and dry. Portions are on the small side, too. That being said, be a patron here, for you won't find a nicer bunch of guys.

The resturants was not crowded when we arrived for a 12:30 Sunday brunch yet it took a long time to get coffee. We asks for bread and none ever arrived. The menu was very limited Abd they were out of a number of the items on it and did no have substitutes. They were out of pastries, crosants and smoked salmon. Two people had e French toast which consisted of 1 slice of think French toast on a plate for 13. The French toast was sort of well done on the outsid but not really coked fully indid. Overall, a disappointment.

First time for brunch with friends. The service offered by the French proprietors was very good and cordial. The food also was good, well prepared and with French touches. However the interior temperature was too low and we were all cold. This was mentioned to the owner yet he seemed to be content with it. Guests beware! Also the exhaust of the kitchen was not adequate and we all left the restaurant with a strong smell of frying which lasted all afternoon. Something needs to be done in that area. But all in all recommended.

Have only visited for brunch. Very attentive staff and extremely friendly service. Don't be fooled by the relatively plain outside appearance - the inside is very inviting and romantic. Food is solid, with some dishes relatively simple, but well prepared and very reasonably priced. Overall great value and a pleasant ambiance for a couple's or small group brunch.

Discovered a lovely new neighborhood gem. It has a very nice and cozy atmosphere. The food was delicious, I had a salad and veggie pasta dish and my friend had the veggie pasta with salmon tartine to start. We split a pear tart for dessert. The brothers who own the place were very friendly and the service was terrific. We went on a Friday night when a small musical group
entertains. It was a very pleasant evening. I would definitely go back and sample other items on the menu.

Wonderful service, lots of attention. We didn't have to wait to be seated. The roasted chicken was delicious, classic french bistro staple. The rack of lamb was good, but needed more taste and it could have been warmer and was a tad too rare for my taste. The bread pudding dessert was good, but again could be more tasteful. I would go again.

We greatly enjoyed our dinner experience at Frere de Lys. The restaurant is set up in the typical, old New York fashion with a long line of closely arranged tables (limited space and seating), but the atmosphere is light, pleasant and energetic. Most all the tables were filled with local folks (of all ages) by 8:00 or 9:00 pm. Diners are instantly engaged by a charming man (one of the owners I am told) with an appropriate (not overly-done) French accent. A cynic might say he is just selling - and maybe that is part of it - but he seemed very warm and genuinely happy to meet new guests. He remained attentive throughout the evening. When we arrived, a recording of BB King's "Thrill is Gone" was playing (which instantly put me in a good state of mind). Soon a live singer/guitarist took over and played a mix of songs, many from the 70's and 80's. Pleasant, not too loud or intrusive - just right.

I had the sea bass, very nicely prepared, perfectly cooked and retaining its juicy-ness and fresh flavor. My date had the pan roasted chicken special and it was scrumptious. The vegetables, an assortment of carrots, squash and asparagus, all gently cooked were very complementary, a little crunchy as I like them, and tasty.

We had a bottle of the Pinot Grigio and our entire check came in around $100. Well worth it, I would say. We will return and recommend Frere de Lys to others interested in a really nice neighborhood experience, serving well above average french-oriented cuisine.

This was an ok brunch but nothing to write home about. While I actually prefer limited menus like this one, a number of options were unavailable, so this one was especially limited, and, to be frank, none of the remaining items really excited me. (They were making crepes at the door but these weren't on the menu and weren't offered.) I ordered an omelet and it was fine. Nothing special. It came with only a splash of salad on the side, some chunks of romaine lettuce dressed with a classic vinaigrette, a combination which for some reason I've never really liked. Romaine requires a creamy dressing and vinaigrette lighter leaves. I find myself in this neighborhood again, I'll likely try someplace else.

The restaurant is very appealing with a menu that does not have much choice - this sounded great to me, as it meant less plates better prepared. The place was quite noisy despite being half empty. The service was nice and offered us to move to another table in the back of the restaurant. A few plates were not available but were replaced by great seasonal plates. For the entry I had a mushroom soup, which was good but a little bit fade. The tartare, I read many reviews praising it, was disappointing, as the meat did not look that fresh and appealing. So the overall experience was positive but not incredible, I was expecting more.
