French Meadow Cafe & Bluestem Bar Ratings and Reviews
Our reservation was for 7:30PM. When we arrived we were told that they had over booked and we would have to wait for a table and would not get the booth we had requested.
Our waiting time was only about 15 minutes when we were seated at a small table between two other couples. Not the night out I was expecting but the food was excellent.
We'd booked a reservation at Bluestem for Valentine's Day dinner, and when we arrived, the host told us "We overbooked for tonight, so it'll be about a 30-45-minute wait." No apology, no offer to take a drink order while we waited, just "I'll show you to the waiting area." There were a lot of embarrassed, uncomfortable-looking couples waiting there--so many that we doubted we'd get in before an hour after our reserved time. We were too hungry to wait that long, so we left. I'm still stunned at Bluestem's rudeness, leaving customers in the lurch like that on a special occasion and not having the decency to make any effort toward making it up to them. If you read other review sites, you'll see that the service at Bluestem is hit or miss. For me, their food is not worth rolling the dice again.
Great service! Teen daughter trying out vegetarian diet currently and she was disappointed in her veggie burger meal. I had salmon curry and that special was excellent! The sauce was amazing. Everyone else thought their meals were okay. Would love to come in to town to try the breakfast menu.
I chose this restaurant based on the menu with several vegetarian and vegan options. The menu did not disappoint, the drinks and food were both very good. I was let down by the level of service, I'm not sure if it was the kitchen, bar, or our server, but the evening progressed very slowly and it did not seem overly busy in the restaurant. My reservation was for 7:00, we were seated around 7:20, but did not get served our first drinks until closer to 8:00 and the meal wasn't over until around 9:30 (we paid and left promptly after finishing our main courses). Given this, it seems the restaurant must have been understaffed for a Friday evening. I would visit French Meadow again, but probably as quick service, not sit down.
The place was nice as well as the art work in the women's bathroom. The service from the host was quick and she sat us and actually read the notes and wished me a Happy Birthday. The server didn't even know it was a birthday booking but that was ok with me. She seemed to be in a rush. We didn't even get our water until we were half way done with our dinner because she totally forgot about it in the beginning. The vegan pasta entree I ordered was not what I expected nor did it have flavor, so I asked for red chili pepper flakes to improve the taste of it. I thought the sauce was a red sauce but apparently it seemed to be a carrot sauce. The restaurant should at least address what sauce is in the entree. I thought it was a red sauce with vegetables added in the sauce because on the menu stated only the vegetables. The fruit tart was good. We didn't get asked for refills on our beverages and I had ice tea. I would still come back to give this place a 2nd try but ordering something different off the menu and hope the server is more attentive.
We love French Meadow but this visit was disappointing due to a poor server. We waiting for over 10 minutes to be acknowledged by our server and then it took another several minutes to get our drinks. She seemed to be very unaware, asked if we had our appetizer when he actually had finished it. Very inattentive. Not our typical experience at FM.
We were disappointed with the long wait, food mix-ups and disappointing service. We waited over a half hour for our French fries and when they arrived, they were barely warm. They tasted like they had sat on the counter too long before bringing to our table or had been reheated. Our main entree was supposed to be vegetarian but it came with chicken mixed in. We had to wait another 10 minutes for it to be remade while some of our table ate. The table next to us got their food way before us and they had a party of 12. Our family used to eat here every weekend but we stopped eating here due to the inconsistent and poor service. Last night after a year off from eating here, I went at my son's request for a special evening, but alas, nothing had changed. The service was still very poor and now it was apparent, the quality was going downhill as well. Go somewhere else for a special occasion.
Our dinner at Bluestem was chaotic. We made a reservation, only to arrive and find out there was still a 20 minute wait for our table. We joined a group of about 15 other diners waiting for their tables in the waiting area. The manager was visibly stressed and couldn’t even be bothered to show us where the waiting area was, she just gestured vaguely over her shoulder when we asked. When we were finally seated it was at an awkward table between the waiting area and kitchen. People who were waiting were standing/leaning on our table so I was frequently getting elbowed in the head. Our server was probably the only staff member that didn’t seem stressed out by the huge crowd; he took his sweet time with everything he did. The food was good, but overall it was a disappointing experience. We won’t be back.
We went there for Thanksgiving. I realize it was a holiday but the service was unbelievably bad. At first I made a reservation for two people, then called and added two more. When we checked in that had not been updated. We ordered drinks, salads and entrees all at the same time. We got 3 salads, not 4. The 4th salad arrived exactly when the entrees arrived. But we only got 3 of them with no explanation. Not wanting to have cold food two of us split one entree. About 30 minutes later the 4th entree arrived in a to go package. Even the server said she had no idea why that happened, but if she had been paying attention to our table she would have noticed only 3 of us got our salad and only 3 got entrees. Also the glassware was not clean.
Again, I realize it was Thanksgiving, but it seems they were understaffed or took on too many reservations for the staff they had.
The food was quite good but the evening was not very enjoyable because of the poor service.
I will definitely be back for regular service, but not for a special event. Even though we had a reservation, we waited 20 minutes to be seated. We then waited 15 minutes to be greeted by our server, then 10 more minutes to get our beer delivered. The Thanksgiving menu was great, but not worth the high prices and poor service. It felt like they weren't prepared for the amount of volume they were doing that night.
My son and I drove from Michigan to Minneapolis to visit friends for a Thanksgiving weekend. I looked online for a restaurant that was open on the holiday and was pleased to find that French Meadow offered a special meal. We have eaten there for brunch on previous trips. Our reservation for Thanksgiving was for 1:30, and we arrived exactly on time and were seated immediately. That part was wonderful. My son and I each ordered the traditional turkey dinner. The odd thing was that our server brought it to us immediately (as in, after less than 3 minutes), almost as if it had been under a heat lamp. The slices of squash were crunchy. I'm not a gourmet, but that didn't seem right. Also, whereas the light turkey meat I was served was juicy, my slice of dark meat was like turkey jerky. So disappointed. If there's a next time, we'll go for Perkins.
We chose French Meadow for our meal on Thanksgiving Day because it provides the organic foods that our vegan sister enjoys. The food we had was excellent and efficiently served by Jalen.
The reservation system had not been updated for the day so there was confusion & miscommunication about our scheduled time. The staff handled it graciously & we were well taken care of.
This is one of our favorite go to restaurants. The food and drink is always good and they have a great selection of vegetarian options. Usually the service is good as well, however, this time is was terrible! We waited 25 minutes for our scheduled table, then 25 minutes for the server and even when the restaurant thinned out we asked for more water and never received it and our when we asked for the check we waited another 15-20 minutes....hopefully this was just a bad night
Wife's birthday. 4 people. Very good food. Wonderful beer, half priced. Delicious chocolate deserts, with a birthday candle. Absolutely great waitress. No nonsense, totally attentive, very sweet, the best. Great birthday dinner for my wife. The bar, large booths and atmosphere in Blue Stem is outstanding. Be back soon.
I have loved French Meadow forever and a couple years ago we ate at Bluestem for an anniversary dinner and it was SO GOOD. But this time it SO MEDIOCRE. Disapointed. The cheese plate was a wonderful way to start but I got the tempeh Reuben and I'm not even sure the tempeh was cooked, it was cold. My husband got the veggie burger and both the bun and the burger was so crumbly he gave up trying to eat it... his parents had the pork chop special and they both liked that a lot so that was a high point. Our kids got he macaroni and cheese and neither of them would eat it. The server was excellent. Apparently he usually works at the other location so he was a little confused at times but super helpful nonetheless.
We have been here a handful of times. We have found some dinner items such as the salad and mussels consistent. We went there tonight and sat outside, the service was slow. We had the apple and cheddar salad and it was great as always. Unfortunately we ordered the mussels and it was oily and over salted coupled with a buttered bread made this hard to enjoy. The server said it was prepared as it should have been. There are a number of other options around I would choose before going back even though they do have a great space inside or out!
