Freds Madison at Barneys New York Ratings and Reviews
Like a Zen poem, Fred's takes the "less is more" ethos, inhales deeply and slowly releases a hushed room that is exquisite in both vibe and decoration. And it's not stuffy stillness, but a sense of relaxed elegance that doesn't try, nor does it suppress the diners' spirit.
The food, always impeccable, is simple. A few of the best ingredients, mostly prepared in a classic style, and served with slightly more than "haute couture" portions to insure no one leaves hungry, but gluttony is not passively endorsed.
Estelle's chicken soup remains my raison d'être. Clean and essential, chicken off the bone floats in a warm broth with simmered celery, onions and carrots. If this can't break up or beat a cold, what can? And it requires a bit of salt and pepper, so even those on restricted diets can partake of the healing elixir.
The pastas are perfection. Both the winter squash tortellini with the amoretti crumble AND the Arrabbiata is spicy in a way that heats up the mouth without ever losing the strong tomato flavor. As vegetarian entrees go, these are beyond delicious.
And so it goes with everything at Freds. Pricey for the casual diner who still has a job because they need it, but for the fabulous, the famous and the impossibly soignee, this hushed gem on the top floor of Barneys never disappoints. Though, obviously, one must pass by all of the luxury goods to get there; something that is its own kind of fortitude.
Enjoyed a great Holiday lunch at Fred’s in NYC, the week between Christmas and New Years. Very lively, patrons of all ages. Multigenerational families. Delightful, festive vibe. Food was very good. Fish of the day (sole), salmon over spinach and the burger for my son. Service was attentive, but a little slow. Would have liked the entrees out a little sooner, but it was a very busy and we still were served within a reasonable time.
We love going to Fred’s at Barneys for lunch followed by shopping. Although we prefer the main dining room, we were seated in the back of the restaurant in another room that was was a bit dark and crowded. The food was delicious - the chopped salad and lobster blt were both generous proportions and delicious. Although pricey, the food and service are always wonderful.
Texture, flavor, presentation all lacking. The waiter told us something that was huge was not shareable, but didn’t discover until it arrived. Don’t like deception. Only thing about this is it’s near our starting point for looking at Christmas windows. Would not return.
The food was mediocre and over priced and our server was horrible. He was rude and couldn’t have spent less time with us if he had tried. We had to chase him down to even order drinks because he would take one drink order at a time and then basically run away before anyone else could tell him what we wanted to drink. I would not recommend this restaurant for any occasion and wouldn’t go back specifically because of the wait staff.
In my view, Fred's has become a NY institution. It has a wonderful vibe: great food, great service, sassy wait staff and great atmosphere. The clientele is a reflection of NY old and new.
In turn, it's my go to place with visitors who want to experience New York City.
LOVE the fries.
As always, had an amazing lunch at Fred's. Arrived a bit early and were accommodated immediately. Enjoyed the varied menu and wonderful wine list. The ambiance is always special and first rate. Service impeccable. Loved the dessert sampler! Will definitely return.
I’ve dined at Fred’s many times over the years but found yesterday’s experience to be very disappointing. The food was terrible - flavorless. My friend & I each had salads and neither had any flavor whatsoever. Such a disappointment. While the server was attentive, I found the hostess to be quite rude - she never looked me in the eye. I will not return to Fred’s again.
You would think with the exorbitant prices they charge for food they would upgrade the furniture, lighting and decor. The place was shabby and in need of repair.
On the food front, I’ve have pasta dishes that are 10x better and a fraction of the cost than the orecchiette garbage they served.
Do yourself and favor: stick with buying the high-end merchandise at Barneys, not the cuisine.
