I think Barney’s closing is a metaphor for the overall experience of dining here. Poor food presentation and taste was even blander. It all had the taste of reheated frozen or precooked food. Seated at an awful table even though the restaurant was quite empty. And while not being expensive, it certainly isn’t cheap, especially for the quality level of the whole experience.
We have a good time and taste a very good dishes, although one of them was very spicy and we can’t advertise the ingredient, but it was a great experience
The food was very tasty. The service wasn’t very good at all. Such a shame.
It’s a very good place for lunch in NYC. The place was hustling and bustling. My complaint is it was loud and my table was cramped. The food and server were very good.
Mother daughter trip to nyc
I love Fred’s! I don’t know what will happen to this amazing New York institution. So if you have a chance please please go! You will not regret it.
Lunch was wonderful- our food was delicious. Our waiter was not very attentive, only came by the table twice and we had to flag him over. Other than that it was great.
The chicken livers are to die for. The crab cakes and salmon were also very good. It was a little sad eating and enjoying ourselves while Barney’s is closing below. I hope the restaurant can be saved because the food is phenomenal.
Fred's is one of my favorite NYC places to go. The food is great. There are good choices for everyone in my family, including my picky kids. I love the healthy options, especially the vegan salad. Ambience is great - warm and not too loud. But what I love best is the service. As far as I'm concerned, Aggie Mollinger is the best waitress in NYC. She knows everyone in my family by name and always brings our favorite chocolate chip cookies at the end of our meal. She makes our day.
food was better before, but i'll go again. the sunday late lunch was more crowded than usual
Please don't close Fred's restaurant. We love it for lunch and brunch on the weekend! It is family friendly and handicapped easy access.
Don't want it to close...so sad...It's always been a New Yorkers go to for the best salads
Fred’s is the best neighborhood restaurant! Hope it stays around for a long time!!
Unfortunately Fred’s is closing and anything goes
Happy to see Fred’s is chock full during the Closing
Felt like it was a sinking ship
It was a great place to go, but since the closing has been announced the food is no longer fresh.
Always so much fun to celebrate my birthday with friends & fam 🎉❤️‼️
Lovely place for lunch, the chicken livers were unbelievable, the lobster club was good but nothing overly special, would definitely go back!
We love this place and come every time we are in NYC. Never a disappointing meal. I hope they will relocate somewhere close by when Barney’s closes.
Wonderful food and experience. Thoroughly enjoyed our appetizers, two entrees, one ravioli and one chicken parmigiana with seasonal vegetables and incredible dessert.
Would definitely return when in New York!
Since Barney’s announced they will close Freds staff and quality is gone. It’s a shame I have been going there for many years. I am sad to say I won’t be going back.
Hate to see it closing. Have lunch there on every trip to NYC.
Quality of food seems to have gone down dramatically. Service at best average. May well be due to the bankruptcy of Barneys and therefore due to the impact of that on staff.
Worst service ever. Declined so much.
Not what it used to be
Will definitely miss this landmark dining spot, both for lunches & dinners. Gianfranco is the best host in town & Mark’s dishes are dependably wonderful.
Perfect as always
It was one of the worst experiences I have had at a restaurant.Service was awful. Paid the bill with dirty plates on the table. No one cleaned them for 15 min after we were clearly done. Calamari had shell that I thought was a piece of plastic. Will not go back and do not recommend for the cost, service and quality of food just don’t align. I would recommend your local diner over Fred’s.
I don’t know what the hype is about. It was packed. My salad was just ok. The shrimp on it was great. The fries are great. The prices are outrageous. I don’t need to go back.
We only went to Freds the other day because we thought it might be our last chance to go. Twenty years ago , I loved Freds. Ten years ago, I liked Fred's. Five years ago, I found it barely OK. This week was so less than mediocre, I know I wont miss it.
Lunch service was not up to par but fun and good. will return
The hostess’ are nasty. The service was awful.
I’ll miss both Fred’s & Barney’s if 7th is location closes — there is nothing on the UES that can replace either...
Update on Barney’s closing: ...I always loved the store, loved it’s windows over the holidays ...but most of all I loved Fred’s. Fred’s was an oasis of understated, unpretentiousness in it’s UES habitat. The food and services was always good and the flavors always ‘fresh’. The definition of ‘dependable’. Luckily I shared a leisurely lunch w/my favorite companion last Sunday. RIP Fred’s.
This is a fun place to go for brunch on Sunday morning. The food is impeccable and delicious and is served in a timely fashion. On this last visit Sunday, October 27 I had the impression the staff were overworked. Normally the first thing you give a customer at brunch if they ask for it is a cuppa coffee, am I right? Here it took 10 minutes to get a cuppa coffee. The waiter did not follow up with us about the food which I found surprising although there were no problems. We heard that the famous chef had just been fired so maybe there was some staff ambivalence as a result. But the food definitely outweighs the quality of the service although the service is good, just not as good as the food. The noise level is high but the place is filled with beautiful people.
Food was off :(
Waited 20 minutes even after I had a reservation. Had a burger ordered medium and it was basically steak tartare that had been warmed under a blow dryer. And the waiter took 20 minutes to take my order and even longer to bring the check after coffee. I love Fred’s and was so disappointed. It was over an hour after my initial reservation that I actually was served lunch. Sad...
Reservations for 1:30. Sat down after 2:00. Hostess needs an attitude adjustment or find another type of job. Rude and lacked common customer service skills.
