Freds Downtown at Barneys New York
Great food, their chef and kitchen are amazing
It was a Monday lunch and so relatively quiet. Good food and service. Consistent but perhaps a bit pricey for what it is.
It was everything we had hoped it would be, we were in NY from the UK and chose Freds as it was highly recomedded on a podcast we listen to, it did not disappoint. Crab cakes were perfect.
I love Fred's Downtown. It's the best kept secret. Hoping Barney's can keep it tougher so I can continue to have brunch and lunch there.
I’ve always loved everything Mark Strassman has done. His lasagna is my All-time favorite dish. Period. Since I live downtown, I was excited to see the re-opening of Barney’s and, of course, Fred’s. The food is delicious and the restaurant is stylish and comfortable. Shop and eat!
Chef is outstanding. Service is spectacular. Thank you.
Service was amazing! Thank you, John!
The mocktail was a dispappointment and the lemondate was awful. The bar offered replacements (iced teas all around) but we expected better.
The bread is amazing!
Waiters weren’t able to handler the crowd. Food was ok but not worth the prize
Great spot for Pride brunch
We love Feeds
Fred’s is perfect for a rainy day lunch with the Hubs or a Summer Friday catch up with a good friend. The service is impeccable, the food delicious and the wine (though not the cheapest game in town), is divine. Fred’s downtown is perfect for low pretense, chic atmosphere and a wonderful time.
Incredibly talented chef. Amazing food.great staff. Highly recommended.
The salads are disappointing.
THE CHEF CAME OUT TO OUR TABLE AND CONFRONTED ME!!! We have been loyal “regulars” at the Fred’s uptown for years. We recently moved downtown and made a reservation 2+ weeks in advance for our party of 8. I called 2-3 days before to ask if Fred’s could provide a cake for dessert since it was a celebratory dinner. I was told that Fred’s couldn’t provide a whole cake, just the individual desserts off of the menu, so I asked if I could bring our own cake. The hostess said that it was fine, but there would be a $5.00 per person “plating fee,” and I happily responded “not a problem.” So at the end of our meal, I surprised my daughter with the cake that I had tucked away in a shopping bag, and we all sang to her. Our very nice waiter came over and asked if I wanted the cake cut up and plated in the kitchen, and I said “yes, thank you.” A few minutes later our waiter came back to our table and quietly whispered to me that the chef said there was a $7.00pp plating fee. I advised him that I knew about the fee, but told him that when I had called, I was told that the plating fee was $5.00. He was once again, sweet and professional and said something to the effect of “oh, okay,” and went back into the kitchen. Minutes later the chef basically stormed out of the kitchen over to our table, and loudly and nastily “informed” me that the plating fee was $7.00. I was so taken aback. All of my guests and nearby patrons just stared and listened, How utterly embarrassing!! I politely told her that I was told the fee was $5.00 when I had called. She nastily crossed her arms and again, loudly with a horrible, confrontational attitude asked me “who told you that?? Who did you speak to???What was their name???” I was so mortified but at this point, quite perturbed at this spectacle, and responded “seriously?? Sorry, I do not know the name.” She begrudgingly said she’d make an “exception” this ONE time. SIMPLY DISGRACEFUL!!! The next time I spend $650 on dinner, it won’t be at Fred’s!!!
I was a little put off by one of the hostesses, who asked us to wait to sit until the rest of our party arrived (I shared that my daughter lived around the corner and was on her way), when the restaurant was literally empty at 11:45 Sunday morning. I think sometimes the attitude of some places can kill the experience. Our waiter who was certainly adequate, but not personable and clearly disappointed when our order wasn't more expensive. I really do think both of these things really matter. The food is consistently really good, and it's fun to be in Barney's, but they need to coach their staff.
Great for brunch
Freds was pretty good. Great ambiance and food was pretty good. I would recommend
Food (pizza) was delicious. Service needs a lot of improvement (they were clearly having issues and were understaffed)
If you are going to charge 42 dollars for a salad it should hAve more than 3 cold shrimp!
My experience at Fred’s was quite enjoyable. The cocktails were refreshing and the service matched! John was super pleasant and very attentive. I’ll be back for sure to dine at Fred’s it’s truly a gem.
Always impeccable service. Five stars.
Loved it as always!
Ok for brunch. Startling prices for what it is. I’d pay that price if it was a cooler crowd. Good place to take parents and those who love fashion.
Always a scene
Always good fresh food with many options
Always willing to accommodate nutritional needs
Fun, classy, hip
They continue to be great - as you order just remember the main dishes tend to be large so order accordingly unless you like BIG meals
I dine fairly frequently at Fred’s and they were “off” tonight —- not enough staff.
They need to change their closing time. I was introducing someone to the restaurant and she was so nervous that it said they were closing at 8pm, not to mention the staff was very rushed and nervous which didn’t help.
Perfect lunch - food was delicious, service excellent. Perfect mother daughter lunch spot.
Amazing time at Fred’s as always
It was fun but not sure that it’s worth the price. Very pretty room with attentive service.
Food was expensive; nice. Cocktails were incredible
Overall good food and service. Dessert items on menu were not available.
great food, service and atmosphere - my 6th visit and I will most definitely return
Martinis with the most ridiculously special olives - the heat was an exceptional surprise. Never had one prepared like that before and we will certainly return for more lol. Pasta dishes fresh and homemade. Even the sliced wheat bread was memorable. One of our favorite Sunday afternoon spots when we happen to come back to the apartment early.
We usually absolutely love this place. The manager and GM are both fantastic, but our server had attitude from the first conversation. He didn't listen, messed up our orders, and really didn't seem to care at all. It was really disappointing for a $250 lunch.
Always fun here - great food - very friendly nice staff and a great ambience and location
Fred’s at Barney’s Downtown is an understated, elegant space, nice menu options and excellent service.
Our entire table ordered the Thom Browne designer burger and it was outstanding - the add-on of the mini bottle of Moët was a nice touch!
Cannot wait to come back to my favorite lunch spot!
I love Fred's and eat at the uptown location frequently for lunch with friends and dinner with my husband. I usually order my favorite salad for lunch at the uptown location and ordered the same salad at the downtown location. The salad was really disappointing and nowhere near as good as the one I am used to having uptown. Also my friend had the french fries which are usually the best in the city and they were soggy and very average. At the end of the day it was a very nice atmosphere to meet a friend and catch up where the uptown location can be noisy and frantic for lunch, the service was fantastic and we were comfortable sitting at our table for almost two hours having lunch and catching up. That being said, I will be dining at the uptown location from now on.
