Server was not very attentive
Always love getting a table by the window with a view of the lake in the distance. Can’t get enough of the seafood salad...and of course the fries with truffle oil and parmesan!
Average service, average food.
Forgot the cheese to my cheeseburger. Brought the cheese to me in a plate, still charged me$2 for the cheese.
I just expected a little better.
Enjoyed the food and service! Family was happy with quality
Consistently good food, service and atmosphere. Pizzas and risottos are excellent and unlike many restaurants, they usually have a couple of good fish preparations on the menu.
A hidden gem on the top floor of Barney's of New York.
First time to the restaurant very impressed with service and food choices.
We sat outside and had a view of Lake Michigan and the beautiful buildings
that surrounded the area.
Definitely would recommend for lunch
Fred’s is a delightful restaurant that we should return to more frequently. In the summer the deck has a fantastic lake view. The Oak Street salad with lobster, crab, and shrimp is excellent. My husband’s pasta always provides leftovers for another day.
outstanding service, good food, a bit pricey... not crowded at all. Sat outside on a beautiful evening.. great view down Oak St.
Almost afraid to recommend as we go here often to escape the noise and crowds typical to downtown restaurants. Conversation oasis in the midst of the noise jungle. A bit pricy but well worth it for the friendly atmosphere.
It is a great place for lunch! Nice ambiance and professional staff.
I took my granddaughter there for her 10th birthday. Both of us enjoyed the ambiance and artwork above a big fireplace. There is a small balcony to eat outside, but we didn't attempt in the heat. The cheese pizza looked so simple but it was perfection! Total yum! It was worth the price. The chopped 17 ingredient salad I had was good, but it was unnecessarily large (basically unfinishable!), and the dressing needed more flavor. It was $24 and would be best shared by 2. The waiter sweetly sent over a chocolate chip sundae and it was yummy. The bread basket was nice with a choice of 3 kinds of bread. Service was very good, as well. I will return!
Always enjoy the decor and food at Fred’s! The salads are great and the crab cake amazing! Had an wonderful bottle of wine and never felt rushed.
Best outdoor spot along Rush Street.
We went to Fred’s for lunch and there was a plumbing issue. The restaurant had an overwhelming smell of sulfur. We ordered salads which were disappointing and then had to rush out due to the smell. As we were leaving the restaurant they told us they would be closing for the day due to the smell. We still had to pay for our meal without even a discount. Was very inconsiderate and poor customer service.
I took my mother here for a late Mother’s Day dinner celebration, and it was a great experience! We had a 6:00 PM reservation on a Thursday night, and it wasn’t busy just yet. We were able to get a table out in the patio, which is perfect if you want to enjoy the beautiful Chicago summer weather. The Pomme Frittes and Pizza were very good. Great spot if you’re looking to get smaller plates, great ambiance, or just to be away from the hustle and bustle of Gold Coast.
We were looking forward to a great experience for Mother's Day...it turned out to be mediocre at best. While the food was good, the service was slow even though the room was not crowded, servers were indifferent almost disinterested, mistakes in our order were begrudgingly corrected, and the cocktails were shockingly bad (watery, only partially filled glasses).
We live in the neighborhood and we will not go back...I guess the restaurant was not crowded on Mother's Day for a reason.
Enjoyed a lovely lunch with friends. As the weather was nice, we sat on the patio with a pretty view down Oak Street to the lake. It was breezy but pleasant. Our waiters were most attentive. I had the Fred’s chicken chopped salad which I loved (note: in the future I would request no alfalfa sprouts). One friend had the white fish and another had the chicken saltimboca and both said their meal was delicious. I recommend Fred’s highly!
Had a great lunch here with my mom. I ordered the lobster, crab, and shrimp salad - but subbed out the dressing for balsamic. Very good! I left STUFFED- the amount of fish they gave was very generous.
I love Fred’s but for this visit with a friend the service was average, the drinks ok and the food below par. The food took quite awhile to arrive and when it did was not prepared as I had ordered it. I did not send it back because of timing but the salad had too much dressing, the grilled chicken was not thoroughly cooked and the croutons plentiful but not edible. Very disappointing....
I love this spot for its great space and view, and in the past the food has been good. This visit, for Easter lunch, the food was bad. Simple things, an omelette, a quiche, a dessert,—were just poorly poorly executed. The food at Yolk would have been way better. Fred’s, was your chef on Spring Break?!
There were very few tables occupied the Friday night before Easter, so it was exceptionally quiet. The service was professional and the food was delicious. My son had the greens with avocado, chicken, green beans, etc and I ordered the whitefish prepared in an almond crust. The bread and olive oil served before the meal was exceptionally good. I especially liked the bread selection which included one with raisins. Yum!
Great food and service as usual!
Too expensive for lunch.
I thought the food was just average. There were not many people in the restaurant and I can say it’s because the menu is very limited and the food is just average, at best. Very disappointed. The ambiance is delightful and our waiter was so-so. I think if they hired a new chef and got more inventive in the food, it would be a terrific restaurant.
Great food great view and wonderful service and amazing bartenders service
the waiter was not overly attentive. dessert came 15 minutes after dinner plates were cleared and that was after getting up from the table and tracking down our waiter. One guest's plate were cleared before everyone was one eating.
portion size was large, salad was good. tasting menu had many good options to pick from. Oysters Rockefeller were excellent.
I think it is important to note that I went during RW 2018 and had that menu. For a $22 prix fixe lunch, with 3 courses, the value couldnt be beat. I had the winter salad (great!), the King Salmon (PHENOMENAL!!!) and the Budino (tasty!). Holly, my waitress, was attentive and offered great suggestions.
Phenomenal food, great menu
Soup was good and dessert was impeccable but the short rib cannelloni was bad enough to merit the meal a one star - pasta was raw and the short rib filling was just that - a filler - i had a great experience during last year’s restaurant week with the main course braised short rib or was it veal cheek a winner - worth coming back - not the case this year.
So we arrived for an 8pm Rez, decided to have a few cocktails with one of the best bartenders in the city: Clarence. After a few Martooooonis we took our seats. It was close to 9 and the place had 3 tables occupied. The busboy immediately came over and said the kitchen closes in 15 minutes. Ok cool, not exactly a warm greeting but I get it, they want to go home. After about 5 minutes the waitress walks over and the first thing out of her mouth was the kitchen closes in 5 minutes...wtf? Why seat us if you’re going to rush us? After we hurriedly ordered that was the last we saw of her....she obviously went home. Look, Fred’s is a pricey fine dining spot in an expensive department store. Don’t push me out the frikkin door. Whoever is the GM of this place needs to go back to his job as a doorman at an Olive Garden....
A group of 5 of us came for Restaurant Week on a Wednesday night. There were only 2 other tables of people in the entire restaurant! It was so bizarre. With such few tables of people, I would have expected our service to be 100%, top notch, but sadly it was not. Our waters were always filled and our plates were always quickly taken away. However, everything else in between was slow. Everyone was friendly and polite.
During RW, you were able to chose two starters and both of mine were wonderful. I ordered the ahi tuna and the cauliflower gnocchi which were amazing! For my entree I ordered the rib and it was just okay. My friends had the salmon and the chicken ravs, which were both much better than my short ribs. Dessert was also wonderful. Their Malbec, by the glass was so good that I had two glasses.
I still cannot get over how this place only had 3 tables of guests. It is so bizarre to me. While the good was above average, the service and ambiance was below average, especially for a nice upscale restaurant inside of Barney's.
Fantastic spot for lunch. Great food. Nice city escape.
The setting is lovely. I wish the food could match. My friend and I each had salads--one was a nicoise and one was topped with salmon. The amount of greens was overwhelming and the dressing was tasteless. The service was lackadaisical at best and we had to flag down the server for coffee. While the salads were a bit pricey, the coffee was $5.00 per cup and we found that to be totally overpriced compared to other lovely restaurants in the area. There are better choices all around.
3 of us.
Service was fine but each meal was mediocre at best.
Unlikely to return
We had a reservation at 7:30 pm on a Saturday night and we were the only people in the entire restaurant. Not a good sign. Our Caesar salad tasted off, like it was old. Not good. Our entree was delicious. We were visiting from out of town and this was our last dinner in the city, sad it wasn't a better experience.
Went with some girlfriends for my birthday and we were very underwhelmed with the food. The ambiance was nice, the wine delicious ... but the food was just ok.
Very quiet - empty actually when we walked in. Great service. My friend had the white fish and I had a vegan butternut squash soup and a crab cake - very good.
Hard to believe a cup of coffee was $5 but we are in the Gold Coast
