Frankie and Johnnie's is my "go to" place when I am in the city. Its been a staple for me for many years. I often try to bring others with me so that they can experience the place too. both location in the city are top notch and highly underrated. Give it a shot! You'll be glad you did.
It was my first whiskey tasting experience which was awesome! Never thought you can pair whiskey with food and have such a beautiful evening.
Filet overdone and not the best quality meat . Creamed spinach had an awful taste
Great time!! Food was awesome.
Let's face it, days like Valentine's Day can be an absolute horror show for the kitchen. For F & J's, it was exactly that. After a positive first experience during a normal day's traffic before seeing a show, I decided to take my date here. That experience could not be replicated.
I'll start with the pros: Service was attentive and very friendly. Both of our sides (truffle fries & au gratin potatoes), plus our appetizer(F & J Shrimp Scampi), were incredibly tasty and well seasoned. Atmosphere was warmly lit and cozy seating. Unfortunately, those are all I can come up with.
The cons: I scheduled a reservation for 8:30pm, but we had to wait an extra 20 minutes for our table to be ready since they were not keeping track of how many tables needed to be reserved. My date and I both ordered steaks ( a NY Strip and a ribeye). After forgetting our napkins and bread, we received our food. Both steaks were cooked completely wrong. I asked for mine to be cooked medium, I received a rare steak. My date asked for hers to be more on the well side, and she received a rare steak as well. We promptly sent our orders back, only to receive an even worse order. Both steaks were absolutely charred as charred can be, and they were both cooked to a crisp. My steak's crust was completely burnt, tasting like burnt toast. My date's steak was the same exact way. To add insult to injury, the couple next to us ALSO received both of their orders under cooked. At this point, we were full from bread and sides and could only eat so much of our orders, so we paid, and left, feeling cheated out of a romantic night's dinner.
To those of you considering coming here, please make sure you come on a day that the restaurant is not too busy, as they can't handle a full restaurant's workload, which does not help justify the prices they charge for their food. To be brutally honest, I don't see myself ever coming back here, unless someone else is paying.
Coughing bar tender, a 15 minute wait while they prepared our seats by the toilet-- the sound of cutlery being sorted all night drowned out my dates conversation. An immediate attempt to sell us a $100 of wine, and a sub par steak.
Food was just okay overpriced for what we had. Portions are very large though but nothing special about the restaurant
The restaurant was over crowded as it was Valentine's Day-- however, our reservation was at 5:45 so we could have avoided the madness. The problem was that we placed our order and even asked for a rush on food because we were there with our toddler, and somehow it took an hour for our main courses to arrive. The tables next to us were all getting their orders first even if they ordered after us. By the time the meal came, we were full off of bread and french fries and had to ask to take our filet mignons to go. We didn't even get an apology from our waiter or the manager.
The food was good but the organization of service was poor.
My husband's steak was overly well done when he asked for medium well. The mash potatoes were watery and broccoli was too hard.
Ourwaiter was wonderful as was the service.
My salmon was delicious.
We were disappointed because it is suppose to be known for its steaks.
Dont think we would go back.
The steaks were OK, but we could see no difference between the medium and the medium rare filet. The veggies were terrible (we had asparagus, Brussels Sprouts and a baked potato).
We went for lunch during restaurant week. Unfortunately the soup was bland, the chicken parmesan was over cooked and salty, and the pasta was quite al dente (too much so). Service was fine, though the food was not good enough to return.
I went to Frankie and Johnnie’s for restaurant week. While I realize it is steakhouse, I chose to have the pork chop. The pork chop was superb and perfectly cooked. I enjoyed the caramelized apples that went with it. On the menu at said a potato pancake came with it, however, it was much better than a potato pancake. It was more of a croquet that was fried and very tasty. To top it off, I had the cheesecake. After a large meal it was a perfect size dessert, nothing too outrageous and it was a very delicious dessert. A great value during restaurant week.
Lastly, I don’t want to forget my excellent service. My reservation was for 730 in there for most of the theater crowd had left. This can be a let down time for servers in the theater district. Not here, they were very attentive throughout the entire meal with no let down
F&J's provided a wonderful meal, terrific service and great environment. The female bartender was attentive and created really good cocktails. This Theatre District restaurant is worth repeat visits.
We were seated at 6:30 I had to ask for my main course at 7:10 and the waiter said you have time your show doesn't start until 8:00. Yes but I would like to be in my seat before the show starts I told him. He finally brings me my food and the plate was cold and the food was lukewarm. I was not happy
Main courses were not prepared to the proper doneness. Our request to speak with a manager was ignored at the time. When food was re-served my steak was over cooked. Finally spoke with manager when we were leaving. He said he was busy, and your meals were recooked.
The food was good price reasonable service was great
Visited Frankie and Johnnie's Steakhouse during restaurant week (Feb 2020). Myself and several co-workers had an excellent lunch and great service. I would definitely recommend Frankie and Johnnie's - if you enjoy steak, you will not be disappointed.
I enjoyed my evening as well as the superb meal I was blessed to have. Everything was delicious I will come back again.
Disappointed - When our party of three arrived to take advantage of Restaurant Week and were seated we were asked the question if we going to the theater tonight, which we replied no. But we were never told why the question was asked. Well it turn out that the steakhouse uses that info to determine who gets served first and not by first come first served. So, after 30+ minutes we were wondering why people who came later than us were getting served first, so we asked our waiter and it was then that he told us why he asked the question. It was at this time he put in the request for our order to be expedited.
Then the food came only to see a microscopic steak and even then its was not cooked the way I requested, medium well. Instead it was red, red inside, so I had to request that be cooked some more. When I finally got it, it overcooked on the outside and still undercooked on the inside. So, this is why my friends and I were rather disappointed with the steakhouse.
This was at least our fourth visit for lunch at F & J's. The Prix Fixe lunch is an excellent value with delicious entrée choices and dessert is included. You also have the full menu as an option which offers endless possibilities. Our server, which we have encountered on each visit is extremely pleasant with a great sense of humor as well as very attentive. We definitely would recommend Frankie and Johnnie's Steakhouse to others and will return ourselves.
Great steak and seafood.
Service took forever. A simple three course meal should not have taken 2 plus hours to serve. We had an early dinner reservation so the restaurant was nearly empty. But my party waited. We figured the food would be good since it was taking so long and frankly it was mediocre at best. Service took so long we took our dessert to go because we had some somewhere to be. I wouldn’t go back.
Great menu/wine for Restaurant week. Wait staff was courteous and efficient. Convenient to the theater.
Bartender/Host was awesome
The service was excellent and we didnt wait very long for our perfectly prepared dinner.
The restaurant was empty, but it was a Sunday at 8:30. The servers were friendly and responsive. The restaurant /bar looked nice. The food, however was a huge disappointment. Two of us ordered the porterhouse for two. It was not hot and it was basically flavorless and undercooked for our preference. The au gratin side was more like soup than potato. The asparagus was cold. Not a great meal for our first night in New York. Ruth’s Chris back home beats this hands down. I expected so much more.
The service, steaks and desserts were excellent. The sides left some to be desired, but no one should go to a steakhouse strictly for the side dishes.
Unfortunately, food was extremely underwhelming especially based on the price. There are much better steakhouses close by in this price range. Filet and lobster tail were very bland and dry. However, Service was very good, quick, and attentive.
Visiting from Florida, Dinner & Live Broadway Show.
We had to ask for our waiter. We sat a very long time. The meat had very little taste for the money. Garlic mashed potatoes were good but the asparagus should have been cooked longer and was not very tasteful. Would not recommend
Really nice place. Was disappointed with some of the food. When you order a 115 dollar steak you have certain expectations. It was sub par in my opinion. Service was ok.
Empty restaurant with tired, tasteless cuisine. Wait staff were attentive and friendly, but the only food worth consuming was the cheesecake. They even brought out steak sauce well ahead of the steaks and without request - as if, you’re going to need this sauce. Like a franchise well past it’s time, I’d select other options before considering dining here.
The service was good, food was good.
Great meal before play! Shrimp scampi was delicious and petite filet was superb!
Service was excellent. However, the food was average at best. I had the crab and shrimp cocktail appetizer, which was excellent. For my entree, I had the filet and lobster. The filet was good, but the lobster was horrible. It was mushy, for lack of a better word. It also had no taste, which was probably a good thing considering it’s texture. My date had the NY strip and mashed potatoes, which were good but not excellent. I was very disappointed with my experience. I have eaten here on several occasions but this will probably be my last trip.
I thought it would be fun to have an “old school” steakhouse experience, but for the $ it wasn’t that good. Steaks were ok. Sides were mediocre at best. If I’m going to pay $47.00 for a sirloin I’ll go to a better quality steak house next time. My review is really based on value and for the high prices I expected something more special.
The price was high for what we got. However, it is because you are in NYC. My husband asked for a specific bourbon, which restaurants in this price range should have, and they didn't. They also didn't have solid ice balls for the mixed drink, which in the price range of restaurant, they should. The main courses tasted very good, but the mashed potatoes were watery and the spinach lacked taste. Our waiter was in no way doting on us, in fact, seemed to leave us alone. I mean like alone. We were never offered refills or second drinks. We were basically stuck at a table in a hallway and a manager like person in a jacket with his shirt tail hanging out would move by our table frequently, and was constantly telling the waiters to hurry up and flip tables. I get that you want to flip tables, but don't do it in front of the customers.
Everything was great and the food was good but way overpriced.
We had an excellent meal. the waiter was very accommodating and the food was delicious.
Great food and not bad value by NY standards
