Frank O'Dowd's Irish Pub and Grill Ratings and Reviews
My two sisters and I come to Galena frequently for our annual sister's get together. This is the second time we went to Frank O'Dowd's. We love it there! Wonderful ambiance, Gaelic friendly people, and always great entertainment. Go there! You won't be disappointed.
Even though the restaurant was not full and there was no waiting, we felt our waiter was in a hurry. After ordering, it seemed the food arrived almost immediately. Our shepherds pie and Reuben were hot and we did enjoy them. The fries could be improved. They were not crispy and salt needed to be added for any flavor. We ended evening with Irish coffee but this was not the drink we have enjoyed in Ireland. The decor here is authentic and the live music was good.
Looking forward to the entertainment was unable to make reservation on line except for 6 p.m., presumably full at 7 p.m. When we arrived, friendly hostess had reserved table by stage. But, the entertainment did not begin until 7:30. By then, we were nearly finished, and ready to leave so heard only a few tunes. Main complaint is that the restaurant was half empty, with empty tables near stage. Very annoying that we'd have preferred to shop longer, arrive later, enjoy entertainment, but reservation system either blocked or wrong on table for 4. And no Irish dancers that night.
Had dinner on a quiet Thursday night and it was just the respite we needed on our way through town. The food was delicious and not only was Joy attentive but so full of information about Galena we can't wait to return for an actual vacation. She talked up the Shepards pie (apparently the owners moms recipe!) and boy she was not wrong!!! It was wonderful! Also we loved hearing about how the pub came about and the history of the town as a lead mining community.
We had a party of 10 and ate at the restaurant for 2 breakfasts and one dinner. The waitress and other staff was outstanding. Very friendly and accommodating and knowledgeable. We were greeted the door each time. Really enjoyed the breakfast entrees. Not the usual buffet style, but some really fun things on the menu.
This was our first time here. Wine choices were very good. Food was very good. Recommend artichoke dip, very yummy!! Staff could not have been friendlier. Katie Sullivan was performing and she was lots of fun. Only 1 Irish dancer and while she was quite good, more dancers would have been better.
Went with our family while on vacation in the Galena Territory. We had our 18 month old grandson and six adults. The waitress was wonderful! She took care of us, knowing that our little guy may get restless. Our food was good, I had the salmon which was very fresh. My husband got the fish and chips and really enjoyed it (and he is picky about his fish and chips)! Again, I have to mention our server because she was great! Very calm and friendly, even though she seemed to be bartending AND waiting tables.
Enjoyed our dinner and the Irish dancing and music.
Party of 4 and 3 ordered fish meals which were very good, I had corn beef sandwich and was a bit disappointed , thick sliced and dry. Next time I would try the Shepards pie!
Great place and had a lot of fun!!
The Irish feel and live music is why we chose this place. There was Irish cloggers before the music was was nice. The service was friendly and timely. The food was good, but for the pricing we expected more - not portion wise, but something more in line with the pricing. I'd definitely recommend this place to friends and family if they are in the area. We'd go back.
My chicken wrap was delicious though somewhat greasy due to the delectable sauted onions, muchrooms and green peppers. My kids loved their fish sandwich and burgers. We had great beers and enjoyed an adorable 20 minute irish dance exhibition by 3 ultra cute preteens to teens. Live music was good as well. Altogether we had an enjoyable evening.
We reserved a table to make sure we'd get a spot to enjoy their "live music" they had noted on their website. The menu online made clear that the evening's dinner wouldn't be anything too spectacular/creative, and sure enough, it wasn't. Things were edible, but mediocre for flavor/presentation at best. The biggest disappointment was the music. The young girl with her guitar was very sweet, but her vocal and entertaining abilities were not what a typical person would consider actual entertainment.
Overall very disappointing and will not be returning.
My husband had the fish and chips. The breading was light and crunch, perfectly done. The white fish was perfectly moist, not over done. I had the pattie melt. It was good but I was sorry that I did not order the fish and chips. We were there on a s week night, one of only 4 tables. Our server said on week ends they have entertainment and are very busy. The Scot seemed very Irish they even had a "snug" - something we only experience in Ireland.
