Francoluigi's High Note Café Ratings and Reviews
Disappointing. I used to go here for great food and the opera singing servers. It was my go-to place for celebrations.
After being seated this time, I was told the servers no longer sing which was sad but ok fine. The food was adequate but not what it used to be. And the service was very slow- we had to actually get up to find the waiter to ask for our bill even though the restaurant was only a third full.
Overall impression: Not what it used to be. Don’t bother going.
Made a reservation for 3 people. Owner decided to put my Wife, my Son and I at a 2top to be able to sell an additional plate at the table of four we had reserved. Owner's poor judgement to sell an additional $20 plate outwieghed our experience. Very disappointing experience.
Former Philadelphians returning for a visit asked that we select a restaurant. What better way to celebrate authentic South Philadelphia fare than FrancoLuigi's? The mussels, veal and specials were outstanding -- exceeded only by the service. FrancoLuigi's is consistently (for years) the place to meet up for an excellent dinner that will not damage your budget. Can you tell, we all truly enjoyed it -- even "loved" it. You will, too. Thank you FrancoLuigi's for a delightful evening.
Menu seems to be much smaller now. Was here for Mother's Day. Service is great, ordered fried calamari and received a small amount accompanied but a large amount of fried zucchini. We paid for calamari! We were a party of 5 and had 1 glass of wine, 2 calamari apps, 1 salad, 5 entrees (4 pasta dishes and 1 chicken dish) and bill was $50 per person. I have been too much nicer places for that amount. A little dissapointed!!
Our waitress, Ally, was terrific....quite personable and most accommodating!! The live music, a pianist, played all of the classics from Gershwin, Cole Porter, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, etc. and was the very best!!! The "Antipasto for Two" was out of this world....and our entrees ("Grilled Salmon" and "Chicken Maria") were made with the best ingredients and were absolutely delicious!! My date, who also performs and plays the saxophone at this restaurant, and I consider Francoluigi's High Note Cafe one of our favorite places to eat!!
On weekend evenings, they have a fantastic jazz band that plays. It's a great spot for a dinner with friends. I'd recommend splitting a few salads, pizzas, and pasta dishes. You will walk out super full but happy. Also a great spot for a BYO, so bring a good bottle of wine and you'll have a delightful night ahead!
A great neighborhood gem in East Passyunk area with a genuine friendly staff and short, but delicious, menu! The fried ravioli were delicious, and the complimentary garlic knots are the perfect pre-dinner snack. Prices are perfect and portions are LARGE, so come hungry!
This was our first time at this restaurant. It started off great. It had a nice menu, loved the South Philly vibe and the two musicians were fun. The food was ok. They ran out of their special which was fine but when we asked if their pasta was home-made the answer was no. My friend and I ordered spinach instead of pasta and they were happy to accommodate but when we got the check they charged $6 per order! They never said there was going to be a charge! So our reasonable meal ended up being very expensive. I am disappointed as I thought we had found a gem. After the owner refused to do anything about the check I now found a dud and won't go back.
We were disappointed that we had to wait, with the dining room near empty, for our table to be set-up when we had a reservation. We were also not seated until four other members arrived which was within 10 minutes of our reservation time. We ordered a pizza as our appetizers and purposefully did not put in our entree order at the same time. Our entrees arrived within minutes of the pizza. Although the food was good, coordination was not. The busser asked each one of us if we were finished while we were still eating. We were in and out within an hour. Not my idea of a Saturday evening dinner out! As we left there was no one waiting to be seated. Why the rush?
let me first say that FRANCO is a gem! he is welcoming and thoroughly charming. i can't believe that i had never eaten there - well it is now on my go-to list! the live entertainment, guys getting up and doing songs with the fab piano player and Franco singing standards - it was a blast! my friend and i laughed our way through a great dinner. my only suggestions - more vegetarian choices and less ricotta in the eggplant parm:-) - the salad we had was amazing the whole damn thing was a win! Francoluigi's is a real find! I loved it! Plus i think that we made a new friend because we talked a really long time and other folks came over to the table to chat....what can i say? lovin' Francoluigi's!
Terrific little neighborhood restaurant. The food was outstanding and the atmosphere was relaxing. Our appitizers and entrees were delicious. There was a little two man jazz band, piano and bass, playing. The music was just right, we could still talk. Five stars for sure.
We used to frequent this restaurant when they had opera singers but more recently have lost sight of it. I am so pleased that we returned to find that the food was authentic and delicious and the staff was friendly. My only complaint would be that the saxophone was a bit loud, but the music itself was good for dining - mellow jazz. Would like to hear Franco sing some night.
Francoluigi's is very unassuming at first which is part of the charm. You think it's a pizza place, but when you walk through the doors of the dining room you are in a beautiful old school dining room that is cozy and inviting. On weekend nights there are Jazz Duo's who play the piano and saxophone giving you the perfect backdrop for your meal. The food is authentic, and back to the basics of the Italian staple entrees we all know and love, not to mention they are executed to perfection. The portions were generous, and the specials were a perfect compliment to the menu. I recommend the Fried Raviolis, Mussels, anything in their blush sauce, and if you want the most bang for your buck get the Chicken Parm you will not be disappointed!
Pizza's are great! Wonderful BYOB (wine only) but also has a liquor license. Fun venue with live music. We celebrated our daughter's 23rd birthday there and everyone including the piano player joined in to sing Happy Birthday to her! It is a great place to celebrate an event! We have never been disappointed.
This was probably my 15th time at this restaurant and the third consecutive time I've been disappointed. We had ordered a pizza and it came out wrong, we mentioned this to the owner who was busy fawning over a large group that was seated next to us. His reaction was like we kicked his dog, and he went running into the back. A minute or two later he came back and offered us a few cut up slices of tomato pie that had been sitting under the heat lamp. We weren't eating tomato pie, and certainly didn't want a few cuts of the other mistake, or the one they leave around for slices. We told him we'd like the pie we had ordered the first time, and again was met with a look of disgust. 45 minutes later, another completely incorrect pie came out and that was that. We asked for a box, and the bill, and we're ready to move on. Bill came, no discount, no apology, nothing. 40 some dollars for the wrong food twice over, and a glass of wine. The same treatment the last time they messed our order up the last time I was there, and the time before that, we ordered delivery which took almost 2 hours, was wrong, and ice cold. I called to complain response on the phone was, "whadda yous want, we're busy" and hung up. This used to be one of my favorite spots in the city, but they've lost my business. Service is always great (as long as it isn't the owner) and food is really good, when it's correct. Too many other options for me to put another dime in that place. Really disappointing.
Francoluigi is a little gem we found in South Philly next to Miracle on S. 13th St.
Great night to see the Christmas display on 13th St. and then dine here. They had a piano player and stand up bass playing on Saturday night - Christmas songs, etc. The Chef even came out and sang a little tune. Overall this was a fun experience; my wife and I did not want to leave.
We will be bringing our family of 10 next Sunday 12/18 to introduce them to this fine restaurant.
We were in Philadelphia for the Philadelphia marathon and have been to Francoluigis a few times before. The running club I am with have a tradition of eating there the night before the marathon and it lived up to its expectations!! Great food, live jazz music this time, friendly service.
It was a fun casual atmosphere. There was a nice neighborhood feel, where staff and patrons called each other by name. Service was polite and attentive. We hadn't realized they had switched to a more casual menu but still enjoyed the salad, pasta and pizza.
