About Franciscan Crab Restaurant
"Hands down the best food you'll find on San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf" proclaimed Sunset Magazine. An extensive renovation has revitalized the Franciscan Crab Restaurant, a Fisherman's Wharf institution since 1957. White tiled walls, beautiful marble bar and twenty foot windows overlook the bay and Alcatraz. Terraced dining affords views from every table: hand blown glass shades and chandeliers dazzle, black and white photos of celebrity patrons adorn the stairs and walls.

Franciscan Crab Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
We had a special occasion so we ventured into the City. What a horrible experience. The service was slow, the food mediocre, wild noisy little children running all over the place, over priced AND they ignored the special occasion while the table around us had special recognition. Would never recommend what we had heard was renowned.
This a San Fransico Wharf must... Great fresh shrimp and crab everything is fresh the clam chowder is excellent the view is incredible lots of people watching fun, the service is impeccable however if you can make a reservation here on the weekend it's best because it is a tourist attraction. You pay for what you get its not cheap but worth every dollar!
Our service was very good although the restaurant had a lot of open tables. The place is very large. The food is not worth what you pay. The crab was over done and you have to peel the shrimp. I would compare the place to a very large diner. It was not the ambiance we expected. There are much better places to get crab in the area for similar prices. Not the worst place but I would not go back. Go to the Boudin restaurant next door for much better food.
I went here based on a suggestion from a friend who usually has great suggestions. The mark was missed here. The atmosphere is a bit too bright so if you're going for a romantic dinner, pass on this spot. It feels like a bright red Johnny Rockets 50's diner. The staff was friendly and attentive. I ordered the fish and chips. The menu (which is a book of pictures which made the experience feel cheap), had a picture of the fish and chips which was more like fish and roasted potatoes. I even asked if the potatoes could be fried more like chips and was told they would be. What I received was still fish and roasted potatoes. The fish was good, but the batter could've been a bit more crispy. My girlfriend ordered spicy shrimp with pasta. It was decent, but not great. My expectations for a restaurant right in the Wharf were a bit higher than this experience panned out to be. I've been to Scoma's (closed on Sunday) and this was more of what I was expecting.
We took some friends visiting from Virginia here. Great San Francisco experience and incredible view. They loved it. We've been here several times before. Supposed to be a tourist spot but we live here and enjoy going for the crab fondue and crab enchiladas and of course the view. Friendly and good service for such a big place. Almost every table has the great view of the bay and Alcatraz. Maybe a little pricey but the prix fixe meal is a good deal.
What a view! Can’t beat the location. The other nearby restaurants have a side view of a parking lot but this one is front row.
The food was delicious and large portions. We had the fish and chips, where the batter was just right in crispyness and thickness. There was more fish than batter! The vegetables and potatoes that came with the fish (no chips...healthier) were grilled. They were small bites of corn, olives, carrots and pearl onions. The small potatoes were so creamy and delicious, perhaps Yukon gold.
The fettuccine was cooked just right and great flavoring.
The server was very attentive.
I thought for being an old restaurant that it would be more of a tourist trap with mediocre food and overpriced. But it is the opposite. You get your moneys worth!
And a breathtaking view of the bay and Alcatraz.
The Franciscan Crab House is where I take all my new clients and friends visiting the city for the first time. It has an amazing view of the bay, including Alcatraz, and has the most delicious crab!! We also enjoy the cioppino and appreciate that the wine menu is lovely and not super overpriced. We always walk away happy that we took time to dine here.
This is just me speaking, but the menu was very unusual. Confusing, and don’t look for your standard seafood restaurant faire. If you like different options, this is probably a good choice. The $$ rating is misleading, most meals are $30+. Salad and sides are extra. What we had was good, but expensive and not what we were looking for.
This place was slightly above average. We shared a number of plates. The octopus and crab pasta was good. The crab and mussels plate was not good....not enough crab, and the mussel meat was the size of a pea. Waterfront location is great and ambiance was nice, though loud drunk people at bar echoed where people were dining.
My hunch is this place knows they have a great location with business from tourists willing to overpay, so they probably will never try to improve the quality/quantity of food and make the prices more reasonable. I probably can't blame them for that, but if I was a local, I doubt I would ever come here.
This place was ok....def not great.
Although the food was excellent, the server was, in this case the best part of the meal! Great recommendations where the most expensive item WASN'T recommended! Personable and engaged, our service was outstanding. Food was great, honored our reservation and all the restaurant personnel was very nice and friendly. Recommend this spot for locals or tourists!
We have visited this terrific restaurant twice in the past, 22 years ago and 15 years ago. When we returned to San Francisco I immediately made a reservation. We were given a beautiful table with a view of the bay and the lights of Alcatraz. Our meal was amazing. Mine was a chicken dish over pasta in a light spicy sauce. As a starter I had the chopped salad. Delicious! Great bread. Creamy ice cream for dessert. Attentive service. Thanks Franciscan❤️
My husband and I decided to dine here based off the good reviews, but it did not meet expectations. Our waitress kept forgetting things we asked for and just was not that great of a server. I had the halibut which was extremely over cooked and my husband’s meal was okay (he called the Calamari Rubber bands). When we spoke to our Air bnb host about where we went she even said that she no longer recommended it to her guests.
