Executive Chef Susan Delbert offers up New American cuisine in a place where famous and newsworthy persons aren't just autographed pictures on the wall, they are probably speaking in the next room! Needed up leaving before getting any food or drinks. Atmosphere definitely leaves a lot to be desired.

40+ you'll feel fine for a quiet dinner on an old DC restaurant.

Millenials : be prepared for weird looks from patrons and staff. Food looked good and staff was very hospitable but not the ideal Friday night dinner

If you're not familiar with the restaurant, it can be a little difficult to find. It is on the 13th Floor of the National Press Club and not obviously accessible from the street. The night we went, there were two events going on and the noise filtered into the restaurant and there were a number of people eating there with Groupons. It sounded like a good deal. The decor is not very special, but the location did have a certain feel of excitement, given its location, the famous people's photos on the walls as you enter, and the one very loud journalist talking at the other table

I was a little worried because the Maitre d' was slightly unkempt and had Bluetooth headphones hanging around his neck. I thought it didn't bode well for the experience. No fear...once we were seated, everything changed. The wait staff was attentive and polite (and better groomed). We had no concerns about anything that happened after we sat.

The limited menu to me means that the few dishes they had were all well made. I had the arugula salad with goat cheese, hazelnuts and clementines. It came in a radicchio bowl with a light vinaigrette. It was delicious. For an entree, I had the chicken stuffed with artichoke and Parmesan. A generous portion with a crisp outside, moist chicken and tasty filling. The sides were plentiful (although the au gratin potato was a small roasted red potato with melted cheese; good, but not what I was expecting).

My husband had the wedge salad (light vinaigrette dressing), crispy calamari salad and apple crisp a a la mode. The salad had an extremely generous portion of calamari--he asked for extra but I think this was the standard serving. He enjoyed his dinner considerably. I tasted the calamari--fresh, crisp and tender, not chewy--and the apple crisp---warm, nicely spiced, crisp apples, crunchy top and creamy vanilla ice cream.

We would definitely return the next time we are in DC.

This was a great place to dine with some friends. I had a Travelzoo voucher which made it very reasonable. The food was creative and ample---I especially recommend the crab cakes. The only negative was that it was a bit difficult to find.

We really enjoyed The Fourth Estate, although we were alone in the dining room due to a 2pm lunch reservation. But the food was wonderful, the waitstaff was friendly and helpful, and we liked being part of the real Washington D.C. -- the part that matters on a daily basis. We also enjoyed the many photos of politicians and newspeople on the walls.

We always find the food and wine excellent and the dining room very attractive with pleasant lighting, flickering candles and crisp white table clothes. The tables are spaced and therefore conducive to good conversation. Photos of legendary journalists hang on the walls and send you back in time. On our most recent visit, we particularly appreciated the waiters' patience as we lingered past the closing hour and enjoyed the excellent French press coffee.

We went there for lunch at 1:30 with a coupon for a two course lunch. When we arrived the dining room was completely empty, which made us feel a little strange. It is a large room with white table clothes. We thought perhaps it was closed. However, it was open and the waiter was vey good. We were able to chose from the full menu. My husband had delicious she crab soup. I had fried shrimp on very creamy grits. The shrimp were perfectly cooked, not overdone, very crispy and not at all greasy. It was a nice sized portion and beautifully plated. For our main dishes we had crab cakes, which very good with a very small amount of fuller. There were three different cooked tomato sides, which were a bit too much tomato. The corn risotto was tasty. I had three, large, perfectly cooked lamp chops, with mushrooms and gravy and four smashed potatoes. The portions were VERY generous. Eventually two other couples came into the dining room but it is hard to understand why it is so empty. We highly recommend the food.

Went there for a business meeting with 1 other person on a weekday. At first we were the only ones in the place at first, then one or two other parties arrived 15-30 mins later. So it was perfect for the meeting: quiet and private. That's probably not what the restaurant is going for, but it worked for us. I ordered the burger and fries, so technically it's not difficult for them to get it right. And indeed, they did get it right. The burger was perfect and the fries were pretty good.

Arriving at 5:30 p.m. allows you to enjoy the ambiance and the quiet atmosphere before the dinner crowd begins to come in between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Very nice atmosphere, great menu, great service, truly great experience. The chef even came out to talk to us and invited us to take a tour of her kitchen the next time we came for dinner. The walls are aligned with pictures of famous sports and entertainment personalities as well as famous journalist. Plan on spending an extra 20 to 30 minutes viewing all the photographs on the walls leading to the dining area. The menu is somewhat pricey but since we were able to use a Groupon special, it made the evening very affordable.

Service was perfect: timely, responsive, but invisible. Recommendations offered if requested only. Food was of the highest quality. My wife had the crab cakes, so I got to try them. I went for the scallops, which were large and perfectly cooked. I had a tough time not going for the rock fish. Maybe next time. Or maybe I'll have the crab cakes, which were among the best I've had in years. Appearance of food also earns high grades. Appetizer options were limited, but we were satisfied. The coffepot desert was luscious and rich, but a bit too much. I wish they had a cheese plate for dessert, but those are hard to come by in the States. My wife enjoyed the glass of prosecco with her meal.

Very interesting restaurant. Finding it was difficult at first(as expected), navigating the building is hard and needed assistance from a few folks. The ambiance of the place is very cool with pictures of important figures. The food was a slight disappointment though. We went for Valentine’s Day, and was not impressed with the food for the price. Was cheaper than other fixed menus in the DC area, but I expected slightly better quality. My lobster was over cooked and the beef was dry. But we enjoyed the restaurant overall.

The service was abysmal. One waiter tried to tell me that a white wine I asked about was similar to a merlot! My original appetizer had clearly been reheated and my entree arrived lukewarm. I asked a waiter what the vegetable was on my plate he replied that he didn't know and left it at that. Lastly, the shocker was the bill that was not comensurate to the evenings experience. This restaurant has been plagued by bad service for 20 years. The restaurant renovation doeant fix this problem. The same waiters have been working there for decades. It's a mafia. On a positive note the portions were generous.

2/14/2018 The service was great and the restaurant was quiet; otherwise, it was a huge disappointment. The main courses were terrible. They baked and then fried the rockfish; the taste was bad and the appearance was repulsive. It looked like an old leather shoe. The vegetarian dish was a large inedible artichoke with a small amount of mushroom mixed with cheese in the center, with a tolerable, but not pleasing taste. The brocoli side was nicely prepared; the fettuccini alfredo side was overloaded with cream sauce. If you like basic chocolate, the chocolate overload dessert (chocolate brownie, chocolate ice cream and chocolate sauce) was good, and even better if mixed with the other dessert of fruit and ice cream. The ambiance is dated and more appropriate for a morgue, with the only windows opening into the cold and unattractive interior of the office bulding in which the restaurant is located.

Great food! We went on a Tuesday during lunch time, it was empty. Took a while for the waiter to notice to us but when they did they were very accommodating. The soup was warm when it came out, but the food was appetizing and good overall. It’s a very cool place overall, it’s like a top secret location (gotta go through security).
