Fourth Estate Restaurant at the National Press Club Ratings and Reviews
We had a wonderful time. The food was delicious, the wine was perfect and the customer services was outstanding. They really worked to ensure that everything was perfect. Very kind and helpful staff. We celebrated a birthday and it was done perfectly.
The menu was small but I could have picked any dish at random and been happy with my choice. I ended up having the lamb chops with crispy green beans and potatoes with a mild horse radish sauce. Everything was delicious. We ran out of time for dessert before our play. The service staff was very attentive to our every need. The place was very quiet mostly due to the fact that there was only one other couple there on a Thursday night.
We’ve lived in the DC area for a long time and never been. Our party of six arrived early for our reservation - before the restaurant opened. The Manager opened the doors and invited us to sit at a large round table, served us drinks and let us enjoy a relaxed and delicious dinner. We had a delicious and relaxed dinner!
I've lived in DC for 40 years but this was my first time there. I've missed so much! The food is excellent and the portions are large. They easily handled my allergies and still offered me a large selection from the menu. The ambiance is quiet--great for conversation, elegant but not fussy. The chef is amazing--my bet is she will introduce herself to you and handle any of your requests. It's a classic and so accessible (and delightful)!
The Fourth Estate is a hidden DC treasure for those who can appreciate it. Tucked away on the 13th floor, it is the restaurant of the historic and prestigious National Press Club and is open to the public. Food was fabulous and far more reasonably priced than we expected. His four sea scallops were huge and prepared perfectly--sweet and tender but not chewy. My two crab cakes were nearly all crab with little filler. The crab cakes were normal size and about the same size as two scallops put together. The husband also ordered the tomato-based seafood chowder and said it was tasty, fresh and delicious. We ended the meal with a chocolate espresso dessert that was divine. A bottle of the house Cabernet was quite good. Not one bad thing to say about service. The National Press Club itself is steeped in history and the decor of the 13th floor reflects that. No, you won't find modern string lights hanging from the ceiling or sleek booths. Instead, think Mad Men office with "celebrity" (ie, politicians, newsmakers) photographs hanging on the walls (like Sardis or Carnegie Deli in New York City.) It's like dining in a museum. A little background music (soft jazz or Frank Sinatra to capitalize on the history?) would be nice to break up the silence and distract from other diners' conversations. Could use padded chairs. Wish they spread diners out a bit. It seemed like each new party was seated in a row, next to the one who arrived just prior. One side of the room was filled, the other, practically empty. When able, leave some space between seating. Lower the lights. It was awfully bright in there, but, admittedly, this is a personal preference. If you are looking for flash or an energized atmosphere, don't come. But if you want great food at a fair price in a refined, classy environment, check it out!
We have eaten at the Press Club several times and look forward to returning. Everything about this establishment is excellent including the location, the pictures in the hall ways, the food and service. The deal through Travelzoo is exceptional and we look forward to taking advantage of it when it is next offered. Even at this great value, the restaurant staff goes overboard to assure that you have a very pleasant dining experience.
We love Fourth Estate. The Travelzoo coupon makes it more than affordable, but we would happily pay full price if eating out were a higher priority. Everything about it is wonderful--the white tablecloths, the elegant waiters, the excellent food, the house wine, the desserts. It's always a pleasure. And the clientele is dignified but not pretentious, which applies to the whole experience.
Great lunch and terrific service. We enjoyed a wonderful meal. Our server was attentive and helpful. The food exceptional. The noise was higher because door was open and group had break outside of restaurant. The views are coming into the restaurant, seeing the members of the Press Club, and pictures of journalists of present/past. The view from the restaurant was of a hall across the courtyard....not great.
We always enjoy the Fourth Estate. It's quiet, the service quite good, and the meals are excellent. It's also easy to travel to and from via Metro as it's close to the Metro Center stop. If you're looking for a lively, loud, bar scene, this isn't it. But if you'd like a nice atmosphere where you can have a conversation a normal speaking level, then this is it.
Very impressed with our dinner at Fourth Estate! It was our anniversary and we were presented with a flute of champagne with a strawberry on the glass. Our waiter was very accommodating to my food allergy and made sure we were satisfied with our meal. All the help was very accommodating and friendly. Lovely and quiet setting. I can't wait to go back!
I'm a foodie and I must say this is by far the best restaurant in Washington DC! My husand and I have been to Fourth Estate at least five times and the food is amazing. The scallops, crab cakes and lamb chops are simply incredible. I highly recommend this restaurant. It's located in the National Press Building so it's easy to miss. When you go once, you'll look forward to going back.
The food was amazing. Haven’t had many meals that were better. Menu selection was not huge but definitely covered our needs. The dining room was quiet. The staff was very attentive. The restaurant was a little hard to find as it was located on the thirteenth floor and the maitre di was a couple of corners away from the elevator. It was definitely worth looking for. I would highly recommend.
Friendly and courteous staff. Value is good with TravelZoo coupon. We had dinner before the show at Ford Theater and that worked out beautifully because they are only a few blocks apart. We had crab cakes and scallops and they were both delicious. Fourth Estate would validate parking, but we didn't drive. The restaurant is metro accessible. Metro had track work on the day we came, so the transportation wasn't as smooth as could be. We'd recommend this place.
It was very special to eat where many dignitaries and politicians and celebrities have dined. The menu is very thorough. We tried two seafood choices (scallops and crab cakes) and both were delicious with a beautiful presentation. The staff could not be more gracious and helpful! The only area of a bit of concern was the entryway and bathroom area. It could use some tidying up! The photos of elected officials, etc. were fun to walk around and check out.
