The Fourth Estate reminds me of the dining experience of years gone by with quiet, unobtrusive service and comfortable atmosphere. The scallops, cheese grits and asparagus were excellent. I will definitely return.
The Fourth Estate is a fine restaurant for lunch with friends. Great service, nice menu options. Also, the service was top notch. When I felt my glass of cote de Rhone wine was just on the crust of stale, they immediately opened a new bottle and didn’t make me feel bad for returning the glass.
It is difficult to find if you aren't paying attention (on 13th floor), and it is technically a club, but also open to the public. The staff was amazing and apparently, they have been there for decades. The food was cooked to perfection, but my steak and my girlfriends fish. The wine list is simple but great prices, the cocktail menu is "old school" and fantastically priced as well. If you want to step back in time and have a wonderful meal at a relaxed place, I say GO!
We.always love dining here! Extraordinary cuisine, very fresh, great selections, wonderfully presented...and exceptional service. Thanks for another sensational dining experience!
A terrific time was had by all!
I was expecting a more well appointed dining room setting. I got more of a feeling that we were in an after hours corporate midlevel executive dining room. That concept was blown out of the water by the top notch service and amazing food. We were short on time because we had tickets to the theater and the wait staff were beyond accommodating. Our food came out quickly and was perfectly presented. The tastes and interesting mixtures of flavors sparked much discussion between us. My only criticism of food pairings is the choice to put scallops over cheesy grits. It just overplayed. That being said the scallops were perfectly prepared.
Good food and Great service.
Very pleased with our experience. The crab cake entree and scallop entree are both excellent - better than I expected. The host, Francisco, and our server, Cecilio, were top-notch and really made the night enjoyable. We would definitely go back when in town.
A must visit, each dish has a beautiful presentation. We had the shrimp kabobs, salmon avocado toast, white fish, scallops, crab cakes. Desert the chocolate raspberry mousse and the tiramisu all delicious
Waiter was friendly and attentive. Lunch--appetizer/entrees were perfect except for dessert. The "blueberry" crisp was apple and the lemon posset was supposed to have raspberry but was strawberry.
Wonderful historic place, good food, friendly service. Take time to look at historic photos.
Hidden gem in the City. We celebrated a birthday and the staff was awesome! Food was great -- everyone in our party licked their plates.
We will definitely be back.
The dining room is really nice and very quiet--who knows the place even exists except pres club members, They don't do any marketing, so it is not surprising there was hardly anyone there on a Saturday night. I did feel the appetizers were big enough for sharing for 2. Nor were they outstanding. Main courses were prepared nicely. My crab cakes were not exceptional from a crab standpoint--but not bad. Others had chicken, scallops, and fish...all were good. There's no ambiance here, just a dining room with some historical photos on the walls. Kind of like eating in a nice conference room. The food is fine but not good enough to warrant a special trip. There are so many places in D.C. with all kinds of regional and international cuisine. And a lot of places that are a heck of a lot more fun to visit.
The food was excellent and reasonably priced. I had sirloin steak which was tender and tasty. Dinner served with a delicious bread which came with butter and a soft bleu cheese spread. The only complaint I had was that it was a little difficult to figure out how to get there. We thought it would be through the National Press Club entrance but you actually need to enter through the mall entrance near The Corner Bakery.
Not just because I am a longtime member of the National Press Club, but because the Fourth Estate serves really good food in a subdued atmosphere conducive to conversation, it has become our go-to place to take visitors for dinner, as well as for relaxing dinners for two. The Fourth Estate is open to the public--not members only--so it is one of thee best-kept foodie secrets in Washington.
The ambiance was great. Quiet, elegant, comfortable. The service was great. Knowledgeable, friendly, efficient. All in all a great dining experience.
Quiet, professional service. Not too crowded. Seated right away. No crowded, noisy or lengthy wait with screaming children.
My favorite place to eat downtown -- excellent food, superb service, and you just might see a newsmaker. It's lovely that the chef comes out to greet us. I offered my guests lunch anywhere in DC and they wisely wanted to come back to the Fourth Estate, which is where I took them last time. I'll be back again soon.
Had a dinner for two late on a weeknight. Interesting location, quiet dining room, (the way I like it) and the service was just the right amount of attentive. But the vegetarian main dish was overcooked, and the house cabernet lacked any body. 4-stars overall.
We always come here for dinner before the theater. It’s definitely a hidden gem. Food and service is excellent and always a pleasant evening. The staff and chef are outstanding and we will always return. Thank you again for a great dinner and drinks. Keep up the great work.
Fabulous dinner! Set in a very cool venue in the Press bldg with pics of Presidents, movie stars and other political figures.
Everything was so amazing. I am picky when it comes to crab cakes and they were excellent! 2 generous backfin cakes with little filler. They were served with coleslaw that had slivers of mango and melon - an interesting and delicious twist, and string beans with cherry tomatoes with a spice that was excellent. The steak was cooked to perfection with asparagus and potatoes with cheddar. We also had an order of old bay fries - sooo good! One of the best dinners we have had!! The chef came out to check on us. Can't wait to go back!!
Restaurant is in out-of-the-way location on 13th floor of National Press Club, so is not busy for dinner, but I really thought the food was solid and it was nice to eat somewhere quiet. They often have vouchers available for discounted meals, which would be the way to go. Would definitely come again. Also they have validated parking, so it might be possible to park here and see a show at Warner or National (but verify before you try).
Food was traditional but solid and tasty and presented nicely.
The menu is limited. My husband ordered the scallops and it was good, not outstanding. My steak was tough and grisly, green beans were bland. There are much better places nearby with much better food.
We were not aware that the restaurant was open to the public but are delighted that we found out. We are planning to return again for lunch and dinner. It was excellent!
I have been to this restaurant many times and it usually is superb. Not the case this time. Shrimp appetizer was excellent, but crab cake was overcooked and dry and there was little coleslaw which did not taste fresh.
Service was excellent as always.
Great food and courteous service.
Wonderful in every way; delicious appetizers; grilled Cesar salad and outstanding crab cakes-desserts are yummy
Always the perfect meal from the Host to the meal to the waiter.
Food was lukewarm, undesirable disco music playing. Soft jazz music or cafe music would be nice to set the ambiance. Bloody Mary’s are good. Staff is always friendly and customer service oriented.
The staff was awesome. A server, not ours but someone whom had a ton of knowledge, showed us around.
Wonderful crab cakes but steak was not tender.
Great food. Great service. We were made greeted promptly upon arrival. The staff was pleasant and very helpful. Food tastes great.
The entrees were very good. The setting was not. I would only go if you want to check out the Press Club and support their work, which we did and do. Otherwise not worth it.
The service is always impeccable. The food is always delicious. We keep coming back over and over again.
Best restaurant I have ever been to. Great food, great atmosphere.
The best ever. Thanks to the great chef and staff.
Great food and wines as usual. Love the ambiance and photos on display
What a find! Quiet, refined atmosphere with outstanding food and excellent service! We had a TravelZoo voucher which offered great value and enticed us to try this restaurant. Our meal was exceptional and we plan to go back! I had a crab cake platter that included two crab cakes with lots of crabmeat chunks plus a delicious melon slaw and mixed vegetable side.
As always, the food at Fourth Estate was fabulous - the avocado and smoked salmon toast was great, the crab cakes were spectacular, and the fish was superb. The raspberry and chocolate mousse dessert was wonderful - though it is advertised as accompanied by a raspberry coulis, but came with fresh blackberries instead. I have previously given 5 stars across the board, but this time the service from our waiter (different to our previous visits) was poor by comparison. He forgot to bring us bread, and when he did, it was not the excellent wholemeal fine grain bread I remembered, but quickly heated (and dried out) baguette slices - all crunch and no density or flavour). After the great service previously, this was disappointing. However, I definitely recommend the food and the restaurant overall.
We really enjoyed our experience today at The Fourth Estate Restaurant. It is very clean and intimate. The photos bring back memories of the who's who in the media and politics and the various events applicable to each. The food was phenomenal and our waiter was very friendly and attentive.
Have been 4-5 times. Food is excellent and so is the wait staff. Highly recommend people come and check out this well hidden gem. Great if you are going to the National or Warner theater.
