Four Square Restaurant - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
We went to Four Square after a several year hiatus because we read that it was closing and we had always had great experiences in the past (hiatus was not related to any dissatisfaction with Four Square). Once again the food and service were great. We will miss Four Square and we wish them all well.
We needed a place to celebrate a huge milestone in my daughter's career.I hadn't been to Foursquare in 3 years, but recalled that it was a big hit the first time we went.
This time, it was even better. My daughter swears it was the best meal she's had in Durham. Definitely choose this site -- the food was stellar, the wine (selected by the bar tender) was perfect, and the servers were fun but not 'in your face.'
My wife and I were blessed to spend our anniversary here. The entire experience was exceptional! Between the delightful chef's special watermelon salad to the complex swordfish and beef dishes, there wasn't a miss. Even the coctails had the appropriate flair one would expect of a restaurant like this.
Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with this restaurant and plan to go back soon.
What a great find! The restaurant was charming, in an old victorian house. The waiter was super friendly, going out of his way to make our dinner pleasant. The food was excellent, made from fresh ingredients and quite elaborate. We sat outside in the patio area, and it was great. The only downside was the sommelier. We were not familiar with the wines on the wine list, so the waiter sent him to help out. We asked for a dry white recommendation and his answer was "they are all dry except for the Riesling," and he left.... Rather rude and definitely unhelpful. We then ordered a wine that turned out to be not available, and he gave us a replacement that was fruity -- not dry -- and too warm. Our waiter was quick to chill it, but the Sommelier experience was the only shadow on an otherwise great experience.
We love 4 Square and have been often. Meals there are always a treat. The service is impeccable and professional. The wine list is excellent and well chosen, and we had a particularly nice burgundy for our anniversary dinner. Each course was superb. Shane blends ingredients in unexpected ways and it nearly always works. I'm amazed at his creativity since the menu rotates every few months and there are always new dishes on it. We'll be back. Very highly recommended for people who want flavorful food - it's never bland. If you're a meat and potatoes person, well, you'll be missing out on the fun.
The first half of our evening was wonderful. The food was good and service was attentive. However, our server deserted our table after the main course was served, and after we ordered dessert and coffee from a different server, we became invisible. It took a very long time for desserts to arrive, with no check-in by either our original server or the one who took our dessert order. No offer of coffee refills during our long wait. This all left a very sour taste after what up to that point had been a very nice evening. All attention seemed to leave us to attend to other parties instead of making sure our night ended on a high note.
Visiting Durham, we chose Four Square. What a delight! We sat on the lovely screen porch, had a delicious house-specialty cocktail and were allowed to sit and talk leisurely. The gazpacho was brilliant in color and tastes. Each ingredient was able to stand out and yet compliment each other. The Tile Fish entree was perfectly prepared on a bed of vegetables with a reduction sauce. It all felt quite healthy and so delicious!
We chose Four Square for it's small, personal rooms and past experience. Courses (presentation and taste) were often the subject of conversation. Our waiter, Chris, was a joy... full of humor and one of our guests felt he could visualize the dishes described. It made our decisions hard and enhanced our desire to come back. A nice evening!
We have eaten here when we are in Durham over the past 8-10 years. The food has always been very good to excellent. My wife's salmon was excellent as were her appetizer and dessert. My meals was the same except the Saratoga steak was very tough but was cooked well in a port wine reduction. The service was outstanding. We will continue to return in the future.
Sitting on the front porch having good a glass of wine was delightful. Food and service was very good.
Desserts were less then satisfying. A chocolate Carmel cake was dry and not very flavorful same with the milk chocolate cheesecake.
The music over the loud speaker was 70's R&B and didn't fit the elegence of the the surroundings. And it was way too loud.
I wanted this restaurant to be great. It was not. The atmosphere was neat, but the food and service were sub-par. I've eaten at many nice restaurants and, frankly, I won't rush back to this one. I'm only giving it a 3 bc my husband kind of liked his entree.
My mom and I had a great time celebrating my sister's 33rd bday. This restaurant has been on my sister's must go list for years (we are true blue Durhamites) and for some reason she never tried it. It was totally worth the wait! My sister and mom are foodies, adventurous pallets and always ready to try new flavors, in contrast I will try new dishes w reservation (my motto: can't say I don't like it if I don't try it) and it was worth the try for all of us!! Service was exceptional and all courses (1 throught 3 were unforgettable).
The atmosphere is elegant, inviting and warm. It was too cool to dine on the patio but I can see that being a perfect place to enjoy the meal. The cocktails were refreshing and added just the right additional to the meals; my wine Reisling, recommended per the waiter, was light springy and sweet-in a good way- as I requested. Thanks for helping us celebrate my sisters bday AND WE WILL BE BACK (considering pricing the venue for my wedding reception....)
First off, our food was very good and well presented if not a little tired. Service was mixed to meh. Overall it was very expensive especially for the portion sizes. I'm not looking for portions a la The Cheesecake Factory, but a scallop entree with 3 scallops and a $36 steak entree with less than 6oz of non-prime less-than tenderloin? As the title states, it's a nice space and the food was good, but with so many choices in Durham for fine dining, Four Square is off the list.
If you are looking for a truly memorable dining experience, look no further than Four Square. It's a little tricky to find if you don't know Durham, but it's totally worth the extra effort. Everything about the restaurant is top notch: not a misstep anywhere. Excellent food, thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented; attentive yet unobtrusive service; small rooms with niches that make you feel like you're dining in private. Just lovely in every way, can't recommend it highly enough for a special date night or celebration. Expensive--but there are many other restaurants where you will spend an equal sum for a far from perfect night. Not at Four Square! Thanks to all the staff & chef for making our evening so special.
My wife and I had been wanting to try Four Square for a while, now, and are glad we did. The seasonal menu had something of an Asian sour/savory theme that came through in the poached duck egg, venison, and rockfish dishes we ordered. Our server gave us lots of personal attention, and was very knowledgeable about the menu and drink list. We ate on the covered patio, which was lovely, even when it started to storm. Try it if you get the chance.
Small but interesting menu. Big wine selection and nice selection of restaurant-specific cocktails. Sectioned-off into small and larger dining halls, so depending on where you are sitting you can hear other tables' conversations.
Personally felt garlic was used heavyhandedly in the salmond dish that did not advertise garlic as being a main ingredient...
Courteous and helpful service with cozy ambiance could be a plus for date night.
I will not return again.
The food here never disappoints and, on this visit, greatly exceeded our expectations. Wonderful lobster bisque, an absolutely delicious venison rib chop with side dishes that competed for your attention and flounder done in a way that both surprised and delighted my wife. We have been coming here for 8 years and they are still delivering a great meal and dining experience.
We spent the 50th anniversary of having met at Four Square. Our waiter was attentive and professional. The wine that he suggested proved to be just right for our dinner choices. The menu was varied and since both my husband and I enjoy trying new things we did just that and were not disappointed. The tenderloin of duck was delicious and beef tongue charcuterie a treat.
My only thought was that I wish that our table had been in a more quiet spot. Our reservation was for 6 o'clock and we had thought that we might miss the Saturday evening crowd. Unfortunately there was a table of 6 next to us and one young women punctuated every second word with "like" and that got old very fast. Of course the restaurant could not help that!
Overall it was an evening of delicious food and good service. We did not feel rushed even though there must have been a second seating shortly after we left our table. Four Square is a special place for a special event.
I'm one that has ever written a review regarding our dining experience. Having been a waiter, I know full well that there are good days and bad days. We simply had a terrible experience at this restaurant, for such a well known establishment. When our waiter described one of the dishes as bologna, I knew that not much forethought went into his pre shift planning, to learn the menu and specials for the Valentines prefix menu. The Venison was too tough and cutting with a serrated bread knife was a struggle. I did enjoy the bisque and fresh bread. Our waiter didn't deliver our dessert on our table, someone else did. They left without describing the three choices. We'd have loved a quick 20 second story to describe what looked and tasted great.
