Fornos of Spain Ratings and Reviews
Fornos is always a good time. You feel like you have a personal waitperson assigned to your table cause he is standing nearby to answer any request. No one rushes you to order, eat or leave. A delicious salad and bread are place on your table soon after you are seated before you have even ordered. We always order the red sangria and are always pleased. Then we order some tapas plates and a paella to share. Plenty of food and good value for a filling meal.
The food is nicely prepared, if a little bland. Servings are ample, the paella was enough for 2 people, and we still brought some home. Albarino wine was nice. Service was good, but at one point we had to look for the waiter to order. Very pretty place, good for groups.
Took my family to dinner to welcome my daughter and her new husband home from their honeymoon and had the worst service experience after going to Fornos for 15 Years. Waited 10 minutes for Sangria, plates weren’t cleared from table and server gave my son-in-law an attitude when he asked for the same wild rice and veggies with the Halibut they ordered before leaving for their honeymoon ten days prior. Same order, different plate contents ten days later? And an attitude for dessert! Won’t be going back anytime soon. Think we will head over to the Spain Inn 2 in Asbury, N.J. instead! We live in PA and thought we would enjoy Fornos since we were in Newark at the Airport. Big mistake. Should have stopped at Spain Inn 2 on the way home and give our business to Pepe and Ilidio - our favorite Spanish Restaurant. Oh well...the company was great and the food was very good. Service ruined the experience and will result in defection.
The quality and preparation of the food was not what I expected for the price of this place. Food used to be much better years ago. The reservation I made on Open Table wasn’t honored and I waited at the bar for half an hour. I had to return the $22 dollar small Sangia because it was so watered down. I used to look forward to the bread and olives brought with bread to the table but no more. I buy the same black and green olives with pimento at Shoprite. Server never brought additional bread with appetizer, but was quick to tell us that there is a $10 surcharge for sharing entrees. This is on a Tuesday night and when a single entree is enough for three people. For some reason the mariscada marinara sauce was oily, and the seafood has that frozen taste to it- for $34 I would expect fresh seafood. The only entertaining part of the meal was watching a sever decant a bottle of wine at the next table. I asked and he told me the price of the bottle, $220. This is not a place you would buy a $220 bottle of wine. Although this dinner was to celebrate my wife’s birthday, we were glad to leave. Would not return or recommend. Not the Fornos of years ago. Maybe, new owners?
Pre-theater dinner which did not leave enough time for paella, but the shrimp dish was excellent, service was attentive and portions were huge. It is really meant to be a leisurely dinner with excellent timing of the dishes presented. We will go back again to sample the entire experience at a leisurely pace.
This is THE must go to restaurant in the great Ironbound section of Newark that is replete with very good to excellent Spanish and Portuguese restaurants. Fornos stands above them all. We have been going there for over 30 years and have never been disappointed.
Food was unique, fresh and very good as always. Paella is the best I've ever had and varieties of paella provide great options. Portions are large enough to take some home for another meal. My only problem with our experience this time was the excessive time it took to get our check. This was probably because the waiter was tasked with several large groups that required extra attention. Otherwise, the service was excellent as always.
You will have so much food while you are here that there is no way you can leave hungry! Before you even order, a huge salad, bread, and olives arrive for the table. I was full before my order was taken! Entrees are gigantic and come with several sides that can serve a small army. The food was very good. The services was unobtrusive. It's an excellent choice if you're in town for NJPAC or the Prudential Center.
We had a great dining experience the service was very outstanding the food was great another good point is they have valet parking because parking down on ferry Street is very tough great for birthdays anniversaries and anything you can think of well worth it
Boris was our waiter and he was great! He was very efficient and accommodating! We went for light Tapas and wine at lunch time. The grilled calamari was so hard it felt like rubber. We were disappointed and told Boris. He said that he would bring something else. We ordered the avocado, crab and shrimp, which was good. We also ordered sautéed shrimp which were also overly cooked but didn't say anything to our waiter. The house wine was very good and the coconut flan was outstanding! The best flan of any kind we ever had!
