We were seated over 20 minutes after our 7:30 pm reservation time. The service was mixed. Friendly, but sporadic. Overall, it took two and a half hours to have a two course meal. It shouldn’t have taken that long. By the time 10 pm rolled around we were too tired for dessert. The food was good but nothing special. Not worth the high prices or the wait. Very loud.

It was restaurant week - the meatballs and chocolate cake were amazing. Pasta was good. Branzino was just ok, but I was also pretty full at that point.

My girlfriend and I went for their restaurant week menu. Here is my review by course:
1st course: the salad was okay. Nothing to write home about. The meatballs were very good.
2nd course: both pasta dishes were great. These were the best food dishes of the night.
3rd course: we both opted for the steak (mine medium and my girlfriends medium well). My steak came out rare. I don’t mind some redness and blood but this thing was still mooing. My gf’s came out medium. I sent mine back and it came back out over cooked. I forgot to mention we waited over 30 mins for the 3rd course to come out. The waitress kindly brought out lemon cello to make up for it but I’m not a big fan of it personally.
4th course: gelato and sorbet were both tasty.
Overall the 3rd course course ruined the experience for us. I will not be coming back but the pasta dishes were very good.

Was looking to our experience but was very disappointed. Not sure if they were just having an off night, but we did not like our experience. the service was beyond awful. Our waiter was no where to be found. They forgot one of our dishes and we had to remind them to bring it. We did a wine pairing and the wine did not come with the food. It was frustrating to pick between eating the food hot or waiting for the wine that came 10 min later! We had to ask the waiter to tell us about the wine. The food was average at best. I had the branzino and it was under seasoned. Will not be going back.

We made a reservation for 8:30PM on Friday 1/24 and arrived a little early so we would be on time for our reservation. The hostess let us know it would only be a few minutes until we were seated. About 15 minutes goes by, others around us are being sat, but our party is still waiting. I asked the hostess again and she assured me it would be any minute now.

Another 15+ minutes goes by and we went up to the hostess again where she was about to say the same thing. I didn’t appreciate not getting updates during our time waiting. There was a table in the lounge available that would seat 4, but It wasn’t suggested to us until after we waited 45 minutes and i asked for it. The hostess said she would talk to the manager to get us a round of drinks but we never heard about that again.

When we were finally sat, the manager came up to us asking if we had any allergies to bring us an appetizer. It was a nice gesture, but we were not impressed about the selection based on how we were treated.

The rest of the night went well, all in all, we were very unimpressed with the service.

We had a large party with various dietary preferences and while the majority were eager to try the Restaurant Week menu, two were vegan/vegetarian and it made more sense for them to order a la carte. Unfortunately, the restaurant insisted that we all order Restaurant Week menus or no one does, even though the charge for the RW menu is "per person". It wasn't stated anywhere on the menu that the WHOLE table needed to order it or no one could. Then we asked to see the manager as that seemed like a very restrictive policy and the RW menu didn't include vegetarian friendly options. The server never once sent him over, or he never stopped by. We actually saw him pass our table numerous times and check on others, but never once did he stop at our table and inquire about our meal. The food itself was quite good (and they did make extensive substitutions for the vegetarians after a lengthy back and forth) but the fact that there was no flexibility in the "all or nothing" Restaurant Week menu for a large party with different dietary restrictions (and no good vegetarian options on it) left a negative overall impression of Formento's and their management.

Food was really salty! I send my food back and for them to make it salty again. Went there for my boyfriend’s birthday they didn’t offer cake or anything but packed it up to go it was pointless.

Executive Chef Todd Stein just put together an extraordinary meal for my wife and friend's first trip to Chicago. The bucatini carbonara w/ pancetta and egg was phenomenal. The gnocchi with pancetta and hot pepper pecorino was delicious. I can't say or recommend Formento's enough. Absolutely fabulous meal and can't wait to get back to Chicago to do it again!

Overall, not a great experience.
Service: We went with a large group so we were upstairs separated from the ambiance of the rest of the restaurant. There was only one waitress and she was doing her best and working her butt off. Overall though, service was slow.
Food: The apps were all pretty good, but the entrees were way too expensive for what it was. $32 for a small bowl of pasta, albeit, handmade pasta, is way too much, especially when the menu promotes it as $20 for a bowl, which is really the appetizer size. The scallops were enjoyable and the dessert was phenomenal.
Price: However, the price of the meal definitely dampened the experience. I would maybe try it with a smaller group, but wouldn't recommend it for large groups.

Food was very good but as with the downtown area you get the downtown prices. It was my son's birthday which they acknowledged as soon as he walked in the door which was very nice and they served him gelato with a candle at the end of our meal. No singing we did that on our own. We had lamb chops, steak and scallops all were delicious pretty small portions and you do have to purchase sides separately. All in all would go back we had a lovely experience.

Overall, I couldn’t have been more pleased with our first time at Formento’s. Food and service were exceptional. The only issue I had was how close the tables were to one another, but other than that everything was great!

Love the room. Staff were great - no service issues as all. In fact, lots of supervisors, servers, and bussers. Always had water and fresh silverware. Food great: swordfish, fruity salad (tastes better than it sounds), meatballs, and pasta (stick with app size unless you like leftovers, which I do). Bar was overpriced and I'm not sure wine was priced competitively although the breadth of selection was impressive. Everybody was very nice!

Loved the ambiance. We sat in a back room which made us feel special for a bit until others started to be seated around us. Staff was very focused on providing us with a good experience. Appreciated the food and experience.

Overall, I love this place. Here's the shortcomings: the craft cocktails were only 1/2 the size of the standard glass for that particular cocktail. For $15, fill the glass at least 3/4. We ordered from the prix fix menu, and the fish was too fishy for my taste, but everything else was fantastic.

I was a little nervous about going to this restaurant as I admit, I’m a bit precocious about restaurant and I noticed it had every time open. I went anyway because of the menu and the reviews and boy I’m glad I did! The food was outstanding, and they gave no problem at all when a person in my party asked for something off the menu (they wanted just gnocchi with marinara). The service was impeccable. We had Chloe and another man but I didn’t catch his name. Our water was consistently filled which seems minor but it became noticeable with the attention to service details. Would highly recommend. Note- it is on the pricy end and the prices listed on the menu for pastas are for a bread size plate of pasta, so you’ll be paying about double that per entree of pasta. Worth it!

This was a last-minute decision. And honestly based on reviews and distance. We knew nothing of the restaurant. We were sat immediately. Service was amazing. Her suggestions were perfect. I had the scallops!!! I highly recommend. I also had the mussels. They were unbelievable !!!!!! I would go return! Thank you Formento’s

Formento's was a terrific experience for my business associate and I who went there for dinner. Our server was great, perfect balance of checking in occasionally but not overbearing. I had the bucatini and my associate the butcher steak and both were delicious. Wonderful tiramisu at the end and a 20 year port to wash it down and all in all a fabulous evening
