Foreign & Domestic - Austin
What Insiders Are Saying
A super creative menu and adventurous food make this one of our favorite spots in town.
Went here for a dinner business meeting. Great food. Great service. Will be back.
The food and the actual servers were fantastic! However there was an issue with our reservation and upon calling and speaking with someone to let them know we were running a little late they took my name and said we were fine. I arrived to find that a Charles was rude to the rest of our party then proceeded to tell me he called Me and I was rude and hung up on him. This was not the case. He would not confirm my number and continued to be extremely condescending which resulted in several other staff members apologizing on his behalf. They were remarkable however it seemed this is not the first time Charles has had an issue with customer service.
First time visit. Parking in an away location from downtown was not good. Reservation not met exceeded by 15-20 minutes with no waiting area except outside in dirt parking lot in the heat.
Did not live up to expectation for food quality, interest (cream corn topped by 3 relatively small scallops) with fruit salad drowned in lemon juice, dessert was very good. 12 bucks for glass of house rosa was out of line. There may be better nights but not for our visit.
What an incredible place to eat. This was our first time dining here and we were not disappointed. The staff is very attentive, the food is phenomenal and the atmosphere is even better. Do yourself a favor, make a reservation and go, often
We participated in Austin’s Restaurant Week. The food and service was exceptional! This is a very small place and it was quite hot in the facility. Recommend reservations for sure.
Excellent dinner at this neighborhood gem! Packed at 6 to enjoy some nice happy hour specials and then a wonderful meal, light and balanced for a warm summer evening. Enjoyed front row seats at the chef’s counter of this nose to tail restaurant that is just so fun to see what each chef is preparing and watch them work—a true treat esp for a foodie. Had a refreshing and spicy melon/pancetta salad to start. A bit too much chili powder, but very nice with razor thin sliced pancetta. The mainstay popover was lovely—light, airy, and bready all at once with a creamy butter-schmear for dipping. Although 2 giant popovers is a bit much even for 2 people, but better complain of too much than too little. Scallops were fantastic... perfect sear and cook as you’d expect, so to me it is about the accoutrement—sweet corn with tomato worked quite well. And a small spinach pasta with tomato in a light vinaigrette was wonderfully fresh and filling. Finishing with buttermilk pie with fresh peaches and home-made ice cream really topped off the meal. All at a reasonable price-point that’ makes this a place to keep in rotation. As the menu changes frequently, I’m looking forward to returning to see what’s in store next!
Another lovely evening at FnD! The food never fails and the service is impeccable. Do yourself a favor, eat here as much as you can.
Went for restaurant week.
Had the scallops. They were excellent.
Would have liked slightly bigger portions, but otherwise the food was great.
Whenever I’m in Austin this is top of the list of restaurants to hit!!!
We’ve been coming here for the 7 years we’ve lived here and are never disappointed. The service is fantastic and the food is always delicious!
Their Tuesday dollar oyster and half off bottles of bubbles is a fantastic deal!
Great food, great service!! Can't wait to go back!!!
I like that the restaurant is fairly small, making it an intimate space. It is very loud; when there were 7 people in our party we could not all hear one another, after 2 left and there were only 5 of us it was a lot easier to hear each other. The food was excellent. For starters we had the lamb, the potatoes and the tongue (the tongue was a little dry). Half our party had pork for the main course and the rest had the fish of the day (red snapper) and grits. It was all absolutely delicious and the presentation was excellent too. The service was good. We had a couple of bottles of wine and a lot of food and we felt the bill was very reasonable. Our waiter gave the birthday girl a complementary slice of pie and ice cream, which was much appreciated. Everyone at our table had a wonderful evening at Foreign and Domestic and we will be back soon.
Love this place and always have!
Lovely as always! Nicest staff around with superior knowledge of the food and wine. You really feel like you’re welcome, and you feel like there are truly no wrong decisions. Best restaurant in Austin far and away.
Great night at Foreign & Domestic. Sat at food bar which looks into kitchen. Great spot for two people
Selling wine by how cool the label looks is pretty silly :)
We shared a variety of options off the menu and loved all the dishes! The service was amazing as well. Our waiter was very descriptive and knowledgeable about all of the dishes. We had such a great experience and can’t wait to come back!!
The most amazing pork, wine, and bread I've had in years !!
Chef Sarah never ceases to amaze. The food is always fantastic, and the interaction with the staff makes for a great experience. Highly recommend!!!
The food was great! All of the workers were very friendly. After seeing it on Diners Drive-ins and Dives I had to go. I love Guy! Will be going back for sure.
Went for $1 oysters, plus 1/2 off bottles of wine on Tuesday. Then stayed for a great meal. The pork was cooked perfectly.
Absolutely one of the best brunches in Austin! They treat the food with love and care and you can taste it!
Food and service were fantastic. Sit at the bar if possible so you can watch the chefs prepare your dinner. It was like watching a show! We found the prices to be imminently reasonable for such delicious fare.
This has quickly become my favorite place to experience food. Every single dish I’ve had has been beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Great service, too. It’s a small space but the staff move seamlessly through it, no matter how crowded it might be. Sit at the bar if you can, it’s great to watch the artistry in the making. Listen to the waitstaff when they make recommendations, they know their stuff.
As a foodie from California, I wanted to try something that was not BBQ in Austin when I invited my colleague from Copenhagen who was also in town visiting. She is a big fan of the new Nordic. This looked like an interesting option. The restaurant was not on the fringe of downtown as I expected, rather in a very residential neighborhood. The nose to tail tasting was just a shade too much offal for us/me, (although I wanted to get it just for the foie-gras mousse) but the crispy tongue appetizer was scrummy, the Texas blueberry salad a wonderful counterpoint to the tongue and the pork entre with peach mostarda was melt in the mouth. These guys know their meat! The dessert was a revelation. We shared a chocolate flour-less cake with coconut ice-cream that was perfect.
Parking is tight and the location is definitely the "hole-in-the-wall" vibe but I high recommend for a dinner date!
Will definitely be back! Great date night, food was delicious. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the menu is pretty small. However, everything was very tasty. And heads up, they only serve beer & wine. Fine by me but for those that don't like either, there ya go. I recommend the pork, red fish, gnocchi (amazing), and popovers.
Food and service were amazing!
The food was fantastic—absolutely the most tender pork I have ever had. You could cut it with a fork and the taste was delicious. If you like pate’ the charcuterie was very interesting with such a wonderful mix of flavors and the desserts were decadent. Tuesday’s dollar oysters on the half shell brought us in for this first time, but the rest of the menu will bring us back for more.
First off, the service was amazing! I can't recall a better place that demonstrates such friendliness, prompt service, and go above and beyond. Food was phenomenal. We went with the tasting menu and Chef did not let us down. Every bite was amazing from first bite to the last! We will definitely be back!
Farm to table. You can tell that a lot of thought was put into each of the dishes. We’ll be back!
This place is so fantastic, the food is amazing, staff super friendly. Go hungry so you can try everything.
We had the popovers to begin which were divine. We had the terrine, blueberry salad and platter all amazing we licked the plate, then we had the half a hen, the pasta starter size, pork and for dessert we had the flourless chocolate cake (my favourite) and the molasses pie (my husbands favourite) we had two kids and they loved it all.
Definitely going back next time is Austin.
Absolutely the best place for lunch. The fried chicken biscuit and the pancakes are phenomenal.
Our waiter was knowledgeable and friendly. The food was excellent, inventive, but still approachable. We got multiple courses and two bottles of wine, and we were surprised by how reasonable our bill was!
F&D never disappoints, consistently excellent seasonal farm to table experience. The fried oyster tartine and blueberry salad were top notch selections for starters. The halibut was perfectly cooked on top of a wonderful pea, onion and mushroom mix.
Raised sidewalk along building was blocked by tables and chairs. Prevented wheelchair access. Had to move tables and chairs onto driveway. Interior congested. Not easy to maneuver a wheelchair. Noisy. Poor acoustics. Had to shout to be heard.
Super delish food
Why can’t every city have a place like this? Small kitchen- crazy good results!
Everything we ordered- with helpful interpretation from our superior server - was absolutely delicious! We also benefited from a nice price break by being there for Happy Hour. It was very noisy for us old folks but the footwas so good, it didn’t matter! I should have come sooner!
As with all things; it’s the eye of the beholder that influences the opinion. Food it outstanding; limited menu. Due to the construction of the building the acoustics make for a very loud experience. Ample staff that have to plan their every move due to limited space. Wine list is limited. Beer list mostly local. Parking is limited. Worth a visit? Absolutely.
