Contemporary American
Located in Portland's Old Port District, Fore Street opened in June, 1996. The interior surrounds a unique brick and soapstone hearth with a wood-burning oven, grill and turnspit; visible from most tables. We believe that good food travels the shortest possible distance between the farm and the table. Our menu changes every day and is founded upon the very best raw materials from a community of Maine farmers, fisherman, foragers and cheese makers. Most of the Maine foods are organically grown or harvested wild, each brought to us at the peak of its season. In 2002 and again in 2007, Fore Street was named by Gourmet Magazine as one of the Top Fifty Restaurants in the United States. In 2004, Chef-Partner Sam Hayward was named Best Chef: Northeast by the James Beard Foundation.

This is unique and amazing. Luckily went Fall and near closing. The place at peak must be deafening. However, the food is incredible and just has to be experienced. And its priced very reasonably. Worth putting on a bucket list. Bravura performances

Well worth the trip. Generous portions. Delicious food! I had the pork belly appetizer which was flavorful and exquisitely tender. The roasted chicken had a deliciously smokey flavor. A wide variety to choose from on the menu.

They just keep dong it right. I've been coming here since they opened 21+ years ago. The only sad thing s many of the original staff are now retiring. However, the new ones have picked up the ball. I travel the country and go to Vegas, NYC, Calif., and other great restaurant cities. This is my #1 in the USA - keep up the great work!

We had an awesome anniversary dinner with Alora as our waitperson. She helped to make the evening special. She was passionate about the food, witty and fun to chat with. Every course was excellent with no criticisms whatsoever. From the delicious bread at the beginning of the meal to the dessert and wine, we could not have asked for more. The mussels appetizer was delicious and good for two to share. The whole sea bass and cod filet dishes were fresh and flavorful with an interesting combination of flavors. The summer squash and mashed potato sides were unique and, again, had a nice combo of flavors. The mixed berry crumble dessert was a perfect finish.

This spot always hits the mark and is worth the planning, wait, cost etc. Its a special treat. Amazing service, ambiance in the main dining area and food is spectacular. Comes out piping hot. Mussels were so yummy and dipping the bread in during and after - so good. Keep up the great work fore st peeps.

Fore Street is rated as one of the best restaurants in Portland ME. We did not find this to be the case. The restaurant is very noisy - in part due to its design of brick walls and wood floors - made worse by some loud, badly behaved diners behind us the night we ate there. The lighting over the tables for 2 on the side away from the kitchen area is non-existent - almost impossible to read a menu. The food, while good, was not up to the standard of what we had the previous evening at Chaval restaurant. Overall, while Fore Street may be a trendy new restaurant, it lacks the finesse and atmosphere to make it worth a second visit.

Very disappointed in the food and the service. The price was over the top and not worth it!! we were looking forward to returning after being there a few years prior and had enjoyed it then. The waiter was-arrogant and cold. Our food was cold as well. we will never return and we will never recommend the restaurant to any of our friends

I never really write reviews but Fore Street is so good I really want you to enjoy it.

It's so good my wife and I drive up from NYC for dinner. We've been doing it for years. The menu is great but the best part is you can tell that the staff cares about every aspect of your dining experience. Been here about 10 times over 20 years and I have never ever had anything less than a perfect meal. If you are reading this and are not sure - please try. It's had to get a res summer - september but it's worth planning your trip to the area around getting a reservation. I hope you like Fore Street as much as I do.

From our first greeting,everyone wished us a Happy Anniversary!
Our server was on it even though we were at the later part of the dining hour.
Our dinners were each amazing in taste and flavors.
We had a wonderful evening!!

This was an amazing food experience... from the outstanding waitress to each bite of food this restaurant was one of the best in the Portland area! Our waitress’s suggestions where spot on, she could not have been more informed about the food and how it was prepared. The food was so fresh and prepared to perfection. I would highly recommend going here. I had the wood fired Cod and my wife had the hanger steak.

I was expecting more from this place. The bread should be warmed. Not sure why its served cold - makes such a big difference when warm. I had the cod which was cooked beautifully and in a rich chowder like sauce but very poorly seasoned. looked beautiful needed a ton of extra salt. I did taste my husbands chicken which was delicious. But the food was expensive so I was expected something better...

Fore Street is phenomenal. Beginning with the crusty, fresh breads and butter, salad and oysters—and onto our dinners (one halibut, the other steak) everything was beautifully presented with wonderful flavors. Portions were generous, but not overly so. Vegetable side dishes (mashed potatoes, carrots) were perfect to share. Both delicious. The carrots were perfectly cooked (not too soft/not too crunchy)and lightly charred, nicely seasoned. Service was attentive and friendly, not rushed despite it being a very busy weekend evening. Our server was delightful. Atmosphere is warm and inviting.

Beautiful building and ambiance with open kitchen though it’s very dark at table with just a dimly lit candle to try to read menu.
Be prepared to have your clothes smell upon leaving from the wood-fired grills.
Wonderful wine list...enjoyed a bottle of King Estate pinot noir.
Salad was fresh....server or kigchen erred on dressing though as it wasn’t the strawberry viniagrette we ordered.
Lobster was tasty but oddly paired with a couple of potato chips.
Local ribeye steak was chewy and tough — also didn’t care for kitchen slicing it before serving especially when that serving style wasn’t noted on menu or by server.

Even with a reservation, the wait for our table was long. Worse was trying to get a drink at the bar. We weren't allowed to sit at the bar or actually get a drink at the bar. We were told harshly that the bar was for his customers when we tried to sit at empty seats to get a drink.

One of my all time favorites - have been going for almost 20 years. Not pretentious, serving fresh, delicious food. Love the ambiance with open kitchen, exposed brick walls. Menu is large and varied - since it was late summer we were heavy on tomatoes - the tomato tarte is not to be missed (wish we had ordered 2)!

What a special place to experience amazing food. The host was warm, the space inviting, the open kitchen mesmerizing and the service was beyond spot on. The smells will over take your hunger, but be patient, the food is even better. No wonder it takes months to get a reservation. Thank you for an amazing Anniversary dinner! Tip: they do it right, offering walk in availability each night so take advantage of it!

When we walked in the smells of wood and rotisserie meats and fresh bread were wonderful . We were seated promptly .Our appetizers of grilled squid and oysters were delicious. I ordered the halibut and my husband ordered the codd they were cooked in wrought iron pans. The fish was dry and over salted unfortunately. It was a nice evening but they need to hold the salt !

A must visit on our annual trip to Maine. From the bread from the bakery downstairs to the cocktails, service and daily menus, this is one of my favorite places. If you love fine dining and food made with fresh, local ingredients, then Fore Street is highly recommended.

We cannot be more pleased with this restaurant in Portland, ME. We’ve eaten here 4 times over the last few years and each time we’ve found the food, service and ambiance to be excellent. Listen to me, you simply can’t find the kind of food that they offer done better anywhere...and I mean anywhere! We drive for 6 hours just to eat here. Menu changes daily depending on season and availability of fresh ingredients. Professional wait staff; rustic open wood fire grill and upscale American fare with a small but excellent bar and fine wine list. Eat here if you love fine food and drink! Really, really like their Grey Goose martinis!

Despite making a reservation well in advance, we were seated late and in the back room. This is an open kitchen restaurant with a fun vibe, which we were not part of. The food was very good. High quality but not amazing. I had the pork chop with sauerkraut because I make it at home and wanted ideas. Mine is better. Not enough sauerkraut or sauce.
Would recommend or return only with reservations that were clear on seating.

Great meal, but started with a 30 minute walk for our table that we made a reservation for, which sadly soured the experience a bit for us (and we heard from others that it’s the norm for them to run late).
