About Fore Street

Located in Portland's Old Port District, Fore Street opened in June, 1996. The interior surrounds a unique brick and soapstone hearth with a wood-burning oven, grill and turnspit; visible from most tables. We believe that good food travels the shortest possible distance between the farm and the table. Our menu changes every day and is founded upon the very best raw materials from a community of Maine farmers, fisherman, foragers and cheese makers. Most of the Maine foods are organically grown or harvested wild, each brought to us at the peak of its season. In 2002 and again in 2007, Fore Street was named by Gourmet Magazine as one of the Top Fifty Restaurants in the United States. In 2004, Chef-Partner Sam Hayward was named Best Chef: Northeast by the James Beard Foundation.

Had heard a lot of good things about this place. Went for the first time recently with my girlfriend and was disappointed. The ambiance is amazing. The service was rude and rushed. The food was maybe slightly over average but not spectacular. Love their sister restaurant, “ street & co.” Just blocks away

I hadn't been to Fore Street for a while and wondered if the experience would still be as good as I remembered. I was not disappointed. The food is still spectacular. The rope harvested mussels are so big and meaty, and they had a marinated squid appetizer that was outstanding. My date had a scallop dish with red grits that was wonderful. The waiter was very good, except that he could have been more familiar with the menu. While the menu changes daily, I expect the server at a high end restaurant to know everything about it. Still, it was a great experience and I look forward to going back again.

Everything was fantastic at Fore Street-except for our waiter. We ordered a bottle of wine immediately when we sat down and then selected, ordered, received and finished our delicious appetizers without our wine while our waiter stood at the next table discussing his grad school experiences. We waved him over but he kept talking for another few minutes before coming over. There were other missteps on his part -no bread until after the appetizers etc. and only after we asked what the butter was for. That being said, the chicken was the best I've ever tasted, and the porkbelly, oysters and sweetbreads were amazing. Tough to recover from poor service however.

It’s difficult to rate a place because there’s such a big variety of a persons tastes in food. What one person loves. Another not so much. But if you like food that is freshly prepared by chefs in an open kitchen right in front of the entire restaurant .. meaning you can literally watch it all happening. With amazingly fresh ingredients purchased from local fisherman, farmers and producers. And bread made in the bakery owned by the restaurant literally on the story right below where you are sitting, you will love fore street. I ordered a lamb chop dish and the waiter even described to me where the lamb came from and the diet of grasses it lived on because he knew the farm their lamb comes from. And was able to accurately describe the flavor of it. From top to bottom. This is one of my favorite spots. Not just in Maine. But anywhere in the World, and I should note. I’ve been to 103 countries on every continent. So if you’re in the Portland area. Do not miss fore street !!

I love the AMBIENCE here, but this last time, we had a really rowdy group who was louder than all hell. We couldn’t even hear each other talk. I think it would be really good if management kept their eye out about that. But I also love and TRULY appreciate the vegetarian options available. Please keep it up!

This restaurant is 300 miles from my home and yet I have been here 3 times in the last few years. It is definitely worth the trip. I have found reservations to be necessary but have yet to be disappointed in a meal.

Amazing meal and service as usual. From my first visit 5 years ago it has become my all time favorite restaurant. Our server Donnelly was great with excellent knowledge of the menu and laid back friendly service that added to the ambiance and our meal. Tried the mussels and the skate entree which is my favorite fish both delicious and light. Thanks Fore Street for helping make our wedding anniversary trip from Boston extra special as always.

Not overwhelmed with the quality of food for the price we paid. The fish was undercooked and the beef marinade was bland. The food was served cold. Have had better/tastier meals for the price elsewhere. Spending more money doesn’t necessarily get a great meal at this restaurant. We invited friends for a special night together because we had a great experience last year. Very disappointed in their consistency. But the service was excellent based on the crowd size.

First time at this restaurant. Loved the layout of the restaurant and bar area. The brick walls give it a loft-like feel. The openness of the place makes it a bit loud but not overwhelming. Food was fantastic. Good drink list as well.

We had high expectations. Service was good but a bit impersonal and not up to the fine dining finesse that a restaurant of this caliber should be at. You could say " its portland" but thats not an excuse... The wait staff needs to be more educated

We had a table with windows looking out to a parking lot, which could be avoided by having curtains?.... So I kept turning the other way to look at the nice dining room and the kitchen. I enjoyed the mussels and the foie gras and the chocolate selection is really very very good. Service was fine even though it was a Saturday night and tables were being turned very fast. Our server seemed a bit overworked but she managed pretty well.

Food was fantastic this time around but for all the warm and cozy ambience they really need a bit more light over the 2 tops. Couldn’t even identify ingredients in most dishes and though they tasted on point seeing the fantastic ingredients should also be part of the experience.

Found the food to be good but was expecting to be blown away. Actually quite disappointed compared to the wonderful meal we had at Street & Co. the night before. The biggest problem was the lightning which was virtually no existent. One small almost depleted votive was all the light we had. Oysters on the half shell were good but embarrassingly small even for east coast oysters and hiusemade coctail sauce was terrible. Steak entree was very good as was the mussel appetizer. The whole black bass was full of bones even after being filleted tableside. And I mean full of bones not to mention that he couldn't see to get them out. Had to use cell phone light throughout the entire meal. Food good but not great; lack of lighting ruined the whole meal.

Welcoming and beautifull ambiance, and dedicated staff. Mussels always a delight. Oysters great as well. Flanc steak was a little overcooked, close to medium-well done, but tasty and delicious, and the king oyster mushrooms were perfectly cooked. All sauces are great, in texture concentration and portion. Scallops although described as dry, are not as good as canadian 100% dry and natural scallops, and it shows in the texture and taste. They were very good anyhow. The chicken was perfect, and what stunning meat texture. The halibut ws a little overcooked again, and a litle dry. As it is served without ant sauce, it needs a perfect cooking time. I would recommend adding a little sauce with it (Pinot blanc, cream & mushroom in season?)
We had a great time, and the bread is just so good. Altogether, a classic experience.

Fore Street was a great experience as my wife and I are celebrating our one year anniversary and was told we had to check it out. The food was top notch as I loved the scallops and my wife also enjoyed the flank steak. Dessert was also amazing as we got the peanut butter mousse which was perfect. Only issue so had is that we had to wait about 25 minutes for our table but the food and experience made up for it.

What a gem! We live in Manhattan and, even so, we struggle to find food this fresh and inventive. We loved it so much on the first night of our two night stay in Portland that we came back our second night and ate at the bar.
