About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Great for fine wines

Located in Portland's Old Port District, Fore Street opened in June, 1996. The interior surrounds a unique brick and soapstone hearth with a wood-burning oven, grill and turnspit; visible from most tables. We believe that good food travels the shortest possible distance between the farm and the table. Our menu changes every day and is founded upon the very best raw materials from a community of Maine farmers, fisherman, foragers and cheese makers. Most of the Maine foods are organically grown or harvested wild, each brought to us at the peak of its season. In 2002 and again in 2007, Fore Street was named by Gourmet Magazine as one of the Top Fifty Restaurants in the United States. In 2004, Chef-Partner Sam Hayward was named Best Chef: Northeast by the James Beard Foundation.

We had a great meal and excellent service! We had the lamb meat balls, the 1/2 roasted chicken and steak, the carrots and for dessert we shared the corn bread with blueberries. Everything was delicious!

We made reservations, but decided to pop in earlier, and the staff was extremely accommodating and moved us to a bar seat. We felt like VIPs as we were informed about the menu, helped with questions and recommendations and were served the most amazing dishes. I usually complain about portion size- we were unable to finish these large plates despite the amazing quality and taste. Don’t miss this gem in Portland.

Review coming from 20-year Portland area resident who doesn’t tend to review restaurant experiences, good or bad. Appetizers including oysters and squid were great. This was the high point for sure and I thought we were off to a good start. Service started strong but in sum I’d rate it fair (waters weren’t refilled, various staff brought the food without our server present so they had to ask where each plate went- for a top restaurant this boarders on lazy, authenticity diminished, no adjustments to bill or any attempt to improve our experience despite polite/ honest / justifiably dissatisfaction). Inflexibility with menu substitutions due to dairy allergy was annoying and very limiting. Mains including pork shoulder and crab stuffed haddock were way too salty. Hard to even describe how salty both dishes were, but I’ll try - they were so salty you needed to drink water and eat bread several times to rescue your tongue. When asked about the food, my dinner date mention that both mains were way over seasoned after I sheepishly said “everything was good.” The server said “the chef has a very salty palate.” Cleary this feedback has been shared before but it doesn’t taste like it’s been incorporated. The chef needs to recalibrate and should also come visit some tables to hear from patrons directly. After spending $300 for two people and skipping dessert we both left feeling underwhelmed and unimpressed. As locals with so many other great restaurants in Portland, it will take st least another couple years before we have any desire to return. Perhaps by then maybe they’ll do a refresh on the bathrooms and some of the decor but most importantly they need to desalinate the dishes. Otherwise Fore Street will undoubtably be casted as a tourists trap and locals who know better will certainly stay away.
