Contemporary American
Located in Portland's Old Port District, Fore Street opened in June, 1996. The interior surrounds a unique brick and soapstone hearth with a wood-burning oven, grill and turnspit; visible from most tables. We believe that good food travels the shortest possible distance between the farm and the table. Our menu changes every day and is founded upon the very best raw materials from a community of Maine farmers, fisherman, foragers and cheese makers. Most of the Maine foods are organically grown or harvested wild, each brought to us at the peak of its season. In 2002 and again in 2007, Fore Street was named by Gourmet Magazine as one of the Top Fifty Restaurants in the United States. In 2004, Chef-Partner Sam Hayward was named Best Chef: Northeast by the James Beard Foundation.

Emily was our server. She was attentive and provided us with great recommendations and outstanding service. The apps, entrees and deserts were delicious. We will definitely be going back on our next visit to Portland.

Fabulous meal, as always! My wife and I said that we could order ANY item on your menu and be totally satisfied!
The service was terrific and watching the chefs in action made this a true experience.
Thank you Fore Street.

This is the 3rd time we've gone. I just dont feel the food is worth the price. Last time we got some lamb chops that were so chewy you couldn't eat them and they were cleared without any question as to why none were eaten. The veggies I can generally do as well at home. I just think there are many more quality restaurants in Portland.

Tables for 2 along the rail in main dining area a little tight. Was in middle of 3 tables parallel to windows and felt cramped. Had to ask couple sitting behind me to slide table and sit closer to table so we could fit. Would help if staff managed space allocated to all tables.

It was my first time here and I did like the atmosphere even though it was very loud. My husband said his meal was good (lamb)but I didn’t care for mine. I got the hanger steak and it was covered in sauce- I couldn’t really taste the meat. The greens were too vinegary for my liking.
Probably will not be back unless to sit at bar

Wonderful food. The service was less than stellar and there was no music playing which made for an awkwardness and stale feeling/ lack of ambiance.

Overall it was nice and our second time back but I don’t think we would go again. There are so many amazing places to eat in Portland with similar food quality and price point.

This was our third time eating here. Our waitress was great. I had the roasted carrots and beet salad. It was delicious. My husband had the oyster mushroom salad which he enjoyed. My scallops were good but over salted. My husband’s steak was a bit more rare than he ordered, but he said it was good. The wine was great. The bread delicious. It was a good meal, but just a little too salty for me.

This is our fourth time at Fore Street, and each one has been a memorable experience!
This time we chose to celebrate both my husband's birthday and our wedding anniversary at Fore Street with our friends, who had never been to Fore Street. Fore Street did not disappoint in any way! We all had a perfectly delightful evening, with absolutely delicious meals that were beautifully presented, a congenial and attentive waitperson, and the wonderful Fore Street ambiance. Thanks for another memorable occasion at Fore Street!

The food is always excellent , had roasted mussels & salad for appetizers . I had lamb chops & my wife had the scallops & we shared a strudel fo dessert. And I ordered a take away of their Finhadie . Our waitress was a little off her game forgetting a few items . My mine complaint is their very minimalist with their wine pours but not on the price they charge for it.

We finally had an opportunity to eat at Fore Street since moving to Portland last year and it was more than worth the wait? The oysters were magnificent, and the halibut dish was outstanding. My wife's monkfish was wonderful as well. Great vibe, great to watch the chefs in action, and the wait staff was kind and helpful. Can't wait to go back!

We’ve been here many times but not since over a year., mostly because it’s so hard to get a reservation unless you call many weeks in advance. We love the food and the cocktails were excellent. We found the prices were considerably higher than our last visit in about 2018. Our server was lovely but we waited about 45 minutes for our entree. That hadn’t happened before.

We make sure to visit Fore Street at least once a year during different seasons as their fabulous menu is always changing and featuring seasonal food specialties. The meal is ALWAYS PHENOMENAL. The service is great. They are very knowledgeable about the menu and can answer questions in detail. The ambiance is nice as well. We always feel special when they recognize a special occasion at our table with a special reservation card and usually a sweet message on the dessert presentation. We are already looking forward to our next dining experience with Fore Street!

Have been living in Maine for 7 years and have always heard great things about the restaurant from people and TV. Never got around to going until my mother's birthday recently. What a wonderful dining experience, from the moment
You walk through the doors you are greeted with a heavenly smokey wave from the wood fired oven, grill and turnspit. The ambiance is amazing as all seats/tables have a great view of the open kitchen/prep area. The menu changes daily and features all locally sourced ingredients. No matter what you have your sure to have an amazing time and meal.

Food was thoroughly mediocre. As is often the case with places like this, the proteins were significantly better than the vegetables, but all 4 of the dishes we got (2 veggie dishes, 2 proteins) were quite underwhelming. Service was great, but I wouldn’t recommend Fore Street to anyone in this day and age, sadly.

One of the best dining experiences in Portland and in the Northeast. Great service (if not a bit presumptuous) and high quality food. My only concern is always the residue grill smell that permeates my clothing when eating here. It's a nit, but it's real. Great wine selection, impeccable menu and comfortable setting.

With all the fabulous restaurants available in Portland, we still return to Fore Street anytime we find ourselves in Portland. The restaurant maintains very high quality food, wines, beers and waitstaff. We love the open, wood grilled kitchen, and the building is wonderful. It amazes how clean and gorgeous the room remains. Fore Street has a winning formula, and we're so happy that it hasn't succumbed to any "pressure" or desire to change that formula. We look forward to our next visit!

We celebrated our 25 year anniversary at Fore Street. What an incredible experience. The waiter was outstanding. He helped us pair the perfect red wine for us - one of us had a ribeye steak and the other monkfish. So it wasn’t an easy choice. What really made our night was the restaurant left a Happy Anniversary card on our table with a thoughtful message. Then we ordered homemade chocolates for dessert and the plate said Happy Anniversary written in chocolate around the rim. Incredible food, beautiful ambience and it was nice and quiet in the restaurant. There is a great view of the action in the kitchen as well. Highly recommended.

All the food was very god but the service was very slow. Our reservation was at 6pm and we all had salads but we didn’t get our main course until after 7 pm. We had planed on getting desert but our server left us alone for so long that we decided not to order the cake we had picked.

While all the food tasted good, the spit turned pork was just a large pork chop set on a pile of sauerkraut. It did not feel like a great restaurant meal.

The worst thing was our server who never apologized for the slowness of the food or service. She also had this edge to her as if she was being fake nice and would rather we were not there.

All in all it was not a great experience.

We brought our friends here for a birthday dinner. It was voted by us all as the only place to bring someone for a night to remember.
I’d even go just for the bread and to watch the kitchen work.
A wonderful night.

Fabulous dinner with friends at Fore Str...starting with the wood fired pan seared mussels...perfectly cooked and perfectly outstanding...followed by a gorgeous piece of Halibut over black rice, mushrooms, etc...world class fare indeed...rounding out the delights were roasted parsnips finished with rum...great addition to the main course...it's pricey...but damn, it's worth it.

We were so looking forward to dinner at the legendary Fore Street but we left disappointed. Sweet potato soup and beet salad appetizers were good, not memorable. Pork tenderloin and hanger steak entrees were both beautiful cuts of meat but again the preparations were uninspired. And worse, both arrived lukewarm. After the server initially argued with us ("that's not possible"), she returned them to the kitchen but of course they came back overcooked. And an apple tarte tatin dessert was dreadful -- a gelatinous disc on a plate, not very pretty and way over-sweet. They comped us for one entree, which we appreciated, but we would have preferred a great dinner. We'll stick with Scales, which is far superior.

highly rated restaurant that we decided wasn’t worth the hype. So so food (very dry duck confit and mussels that seem of good quality but were prepared so blandly, for example: we’ve had much better for much less elsewhere) and unfriendly, inattentive, borderline-rude service (surely the service experience is just our one-off bad luck, but still...). Overall, utterly forgettable if not for the tremendous check ($$$$) that serves as a reminder.

Food was outstanding, service was excellent. Unfortunately, a 10 person very loud group including an incredibly loud drunk was seated just across from us, shortly after we had ordered. The restaurant was full and there was nowhere we could move. We have been here before and always enjoyed Fore Street, but if we come back, will be sure to ask not to be seated in that room again.
