Food was heavy and slow to arrive. Wait staff was erratic in efficiency, although friendly enough. Noise level wasover the top due to a two person cover band's excessively loud music. We had to shout to each other to be heard.
I am very happy I found this place, the food was good, the staff accomodating, it is a great atmosphere and I love the live music. The happy hour alone is worth the visit. This place is in a bit of an unusual location to get to, so initially I was unsure and kept putting off trying it, but once in the restaurant I was pleasantly surprised at how great this place is. The owner came by and made us feel very welcome, even brought out a sauce of his own for an appetizer we were having and it went from good to Awesome! In fact everything I have tasted so far has been really good and I am picky. I had a great evening, so I highly recommend it and will add this restaurant to my list of places I frequent.
Forbidden City is our "Go to" restaurant and it never lets us down. Took some new people to dinner and they loved it. I will say the service was just okay but the bartenders, especially Eric, are always great.
Service was horrible! Bus boy was the only one that gave us good service (water delivered as we were seated and table cleared as soon as we were done). Everything between that was awful. Had to ask for additional cups for sake, needed to request additional place settings, needed to grab chop sticks from another table, had to go to the bar for additional sake, never asked if we wanted rice with dinner (once we requested the order of brown rice (for the table) we ended up receiving one small cup, which of course we had to remind them of. When food was delivered my wife and I didn’t have plates, so they proceeded to deliver the food in front of us. I had to remind them we were having family style and they still haven’t brought us plates f
This place was good, but just good. Food tasted good, but not great. Our server was good but the hostesses weren't too with it. I would go back for happy hour, but probably not for regular price food.
Excellent food and wonderful atmosphere. I definitely recommend having reservations during prime times.
Food is excellent but service suffers because of complete under-staffing. Server was very attentive with a good personality but our meal was served 40 minutes after ordering.
Food is wonderful but be aware that restaurant is VERY NOISY. Not a place for quiet (or any) conversation. Maybe sitting outside is better? Will try next time. Service 1st visit was on-point and attentive. Saturday night, however, service was almost non-existant from our waiter. Food almost made up for it (I think) entree came before we were halfway finished with our appetizers and we had specifically asked when we ordered to wait until we were finished to serve. Service is sometimes very slow so we ordered "all at once" - probably not a good idea in the future!
One if the best Asian resataurants in So Cal!!
Absolutely Loved this place ... came for my moms bday and they pulledbout alk the stops Mike the manager there even had a cake baked for me to help surprise my mom... awesome experience and will definately spread the word and also be back for more!
Second time and enjoyed it a lot. Music was good.
The California roll & the cashew chicken were delicious. Really enjoyed the The Flyer Band - good crowd, lots of energy, and great music Saturday night.
I knew FORBIDDEN CITY for AFTER work (happy hour, evening entertainment). Now I found their LUNCH menu & it's a place INSTEAD OF WORK. Their lunch menu was very economical considering the GREAT waterfront outside table we enjoyed. The wine was happy hour priced at lunch, which was a treat too. And typically a table with 4 women doesn't garner the GREAT service we enjoyed. She even came back to fill our water glasses twice AFTER paying the check.
The food is consistent here. I know I always order the same thing --- but the others were raving about their lunch entree -- so maybe I should have given 5 stars all around. I can say this: They do a great job at Forbidden City
Wow had a great meal and the 3 piece band play a variety of jazz and easy listening music. Dance a little bit and laughed a lot. A good atmosphere and view. Enjoyed my first date. Looking forward to returning.
Great service and food. We celebrated 2 birthdays and they brought cake and ice cream. They have music every evening also.
Met up with a group of friends for a Saturday lunch...nice lunch menu selection and pricing...recommend both the sushi bento box lunch and the shrimp lunch special. Service was very attentive and quick.
Not just your average Chinese restaurant. Don't miss the Wor Won Ton Soup or the Moo Shu pork. The Walnut Shrimp sauce has a little too much mustard for my taste. They have really good sushi too!
I booked a reservation for last Thursdsy night...little did I know it was their second anniversary. They were super busy and sat us at a small table (there were 4 of us). There were several booths outside that sat empty for a long time. It took a very long time to get our drinks and then when they arrived he spilled them down the back of a lady sitting 2 tables away. I felt SO sorry for her. Hence, we had to wait even longer for a second round of thr drinks he spilled. The evening progressed down hill from there. I really like this restaurant, but last Thursday wasn't good.
Great restaurant - seems the music got loud a little too soon
What a marvelous venue to celebrate a birthday! My guests and I had a wonderful time and I'm so happy I made the decision to choose your restaurant for my birthday!
Great ambience overlooking a pretty canal which is part of the marina. Lovely decor. Great wait staff. Not the typical overflowing platters of food. But everything tasted good.
Difficult to find even once there. Parked and took forever trying to find the entrance. Once found, we were greeted by a happy hostess who kindly sat us at our booth seating which was requested via opentable.com. The booth seating however was old and worn. They are made of cloth material and very faded. 2 of my husbands dish ware were chipped. We were seated for over 20 minutes until someone realized we were there. We were however entertained by old school music and customers dancing and having a great time ( with maybe one too many ). We both ordered beef dishes that sounded great on paper but were not so great. Our waitress seemed irritated all the evening long. Unfortunately we will not be returning.
Excellent restaurant in all ways of food and service.
Had a lovely Easter lunch. Will come back again with with a larger group. Thought the food was great.
This is one of our family's favorite spots. We eat there on special occasions and are never disappointed. If you have 8 people, ask for seating at the fire pit on the patio. It is so much fun; plus, the arrangement makes for easy conversation. This is not your usual Chinese restaurant. This is the kind of food my husband and I enjoyed when we were in China--it's quality & authentic gourmet Chinese food and unique to the Long Beach area. The ambiance is fantastic. Sometimes it gets a little noisey at night when a band is playing; that's why it's good to eat at the fire pit when you want to have some quality conversation. I have never been disappointed in the food or service during many visits.
I have been to this place a couple of times, this time the waitress was horrible, we had to keep asking someone else to assist us. Then, she came back and took out food before we were finished and brought the check and we were not even done ordering. I would still go back, just hope that waitress is off duty.
always a great date night..... nice jazz music on the weekends buy a live person.... the food and service are always outstanding!
Lovely Gem. It was our first time at the Forbidden City. It lives up to it's name. My husband and I had a wonderful time. The owner was very attentive to the guests needs. He walked around several times to talk to the guests and to make sure we were all enjoying ourselves. That is quite rare today at the franchise corporate resturants today. The ambiance was a 10+, the decor was quite lovely. We will be going back for sure. as well as the view. To top it off, the gracious hostess surprised us with chocolate dipped strawberries. Wow! I went to work the following morning to tell everyone in the office about the Lovely Gem in Long Beach.
I have nothing bad to say about Forbidden City, the food and service was great. The only negative was trying to find the correct place to park, this was a very confusing and actually made us late for our reservation.
This was absolutely the best Chinese food we have had in ages! Wish it was closer to home but well worth the drive to Long Beach! The vegetable egg rolls are to die for - crispy and very different. Our entrees were both excellent and the components were cooked perfectly. Forbidden City is now added to our "favorite restaurant" list!
Way too noisy for my party of seniors...but an interesting & exciting atmosphere.
Couldn't find the head table without help from harried servers. Then,my group of 4 was seated at an outdoor cocktail table for dinner (I had made proper reservations the day before, & even confirmed them on our way there!) Hostess left my older friends in the dust as she showed us, eventually, to a table for 4. Saki was not hot. Dinner items did not arrive together. Some kinks need to be worked out.
This place is a hidden gem on the water in Long Beach. Cant see it from the road at all. Great food and Excellent service. We love it. Entertainment every night! Try it out and get the greenbeans.
I made a reservation for 9 to celebrate my friend's birthday. The tables they put together were too small even for the sushi we ordered to start with. The entire meal was crammed as far as table space goes. The server was very nice; however the service was slow, and we needed to ask twice for some drinks as well as the check. Also, they didn't offer any dessert for the birthday. I would recommend sitting outside.
fast, efficient, friendly service. Great food.... we had sweet and sour chicken and sizzling seafood, with rice-brown and white. Reasonable prices. An overall excellent experience. Will definitely return.
Christmas night here was the best!
The food was mediocre and was not served together as a table. The waitress was not well educated on the food served. Service was poor and we had to wait till our plates were finished to get refills on our drinks.
If you're looking for authentic Chinese food in a fabulous environment, Forbidden City is the restaurant for you. The pricing is a bit steep, but for a special occasion it's a memorable venue. Service is excellent. The noise level gets a bit high. Also, beware of the Cougars who were inhabiting the bar area; they're pretty scary.
Great food, good service, nice entertainment! Tough to find, but worth it.
I loved everything about this place. The atmosphere was perfect for a first date. The servers were very helpful with selecting sushi for starters and the view was amazing.
Thanks Open Table!
I've now been to Forbidden City 3 or 4 times. The food is excellent. The service can vary from indifferent to moderately attentive. When they're busy, you can expect to wait 45 minutes to an hour or more for your food after ordering. Maybe they are understaffed.
One odd thing we noticed was that, unlike at most other Chinese restaurants I've been to over the years, Forbidden City does not serve up your soup into the soup bowls, they just bring out a stack of bowls for you to serve yourself. A minor thing, admittedly, but reflects a general inattention to the dining experience.
