forage Ratings and Reviews
Ate here with 2 other couples last night for the first time. They sat us at a tiny table tucked away in the corner which I was not really impressed by since we made a reservation well in advance. Overall, drinks, wine and the food were very good. Plates are quite creative. However, the portion sizes are very small for the prices you pay. While I have a love affair with brussel sprouts, $26 for like 10 of them??!!! - is a bit ridiculous in my mind. Favourite dishes included the halibut and duck. The desserts were also top notch. To be honest, not sure if I will come here again. We had a good night and the food was good, but there are better places in Vancouver where the food is just as good, if not better, with bigger portions and lower prices.
My wife and I went for a date paid for by work. Instead of a christmas party we could go out for a $200 dinner. Our meal including wine and tax, came to $152 before tip. I felt that it was good value for such a high quality meal. All the food and wine is from BC and designed to share. Perfect for a date night. We had some excellent Bison and Halibut. I probably wouldn't order the halibut again as we are trying to eat more grilled and less breaded but saying that it was excellent. I would highly recommend this restaurant and the server was great. He had lots of personality and recommendations on the food and wine.
We were advised that our reserved table (6:15p.m.) was taken by another party (8:00p.m) is this enough time for our dinner? That wasn't very inviting. Food , Bison was excellent but vegetables were uncomfortably salty, did not eat them. Told our server, he did not seem to care - he was dismissive advising me it must have been something else on my plate that was too salty?
The ambiance was very very loud, so we could not have a proper conversation with just the two of us. Restaurant seems to cater to groups more than couples.
I had made reservations on line with the special guideline that this was a birthday. Most restaurants , will serve a little surprise dessert or at least great the birthday party as such, nothing happened - disappointing.
I was very disappointed by this first experience at Forage.
We received the best service we've ever gotten at a restaurant. Not only was the food all farm to table, but it was extremely delicious and memorable. We went to scope the place out for our company party. Within the first couple of minutes, the service made it a big contender. After the first few bites, the deal was sealed.
There was a 15 minute wait even though we had reservations...maybe that’s normal but there was not anyplace nice to wait except in a big lineup. We did have a nice table in the corner eventually. Our waiter was lovely but she was very busy...too busy. The atmosphere was high energy and it was hard to hear...but I knew that going in. The food was okay. My seafood benny was sooo salty. Plus we had 2 vegetarians and there were not too many options...so overall I’d have to say I wasn’t that thrilled. Probably better at night but not sure about trying again at brunch.
The two of us shared 3 dishes: the duck, the gnocchi and the kale salad. We also shared the apple pie for dessert. Because the duck takes longer to prepare, the gnocchi and kale came first but the better combination would be the gnocchi and duck just so you have something to soak up sauces from the duck. Everything was delicious; the main ingredients were not overwhelmed by the seasonings or the preparation. The portions are just right, but if you are a big eater you will need to order more dishes. Service was perfect: attentive and helpful. The only negative is in the acoustics: the tables are so close together you can hear everyone's conversation. The room works better for groups of 4 and over, not so well for couples alone.
Went to celebrate my husband's birthday on a week night. It was busy enough to have good energy, but not overly busy to become too loud. Our waiter (think his name was Jack) was exceptional - attentive, made excellent recommendations, friendly, personable and professional. Highly recommend the kale salad and roasted brussel sprouts, both were fresh, and bursting with unique flavours and spices. We also had bison, which is served quite rare, if you like rare it's okay, but this was not my favorite. The cheese plate with wine pairings was perfect. Finished with a delicious light afogato for dessert. The ambiance is warm and cozy. Would definitely recommend and will return.
I recommended Forage for a girls night as I've always enjoyed brunches there and have had a good dinner in the past. After our meal the other night however I felt bad that I had recommended it and apologized to my friends about the food. We had the mushrooms, which were good, small, but good. The bison was pretty good, but with a couple of strange flavors, and the halibut cheeks were, not pleasant; deep fried, bland with strangely flavored side dishes; much of what we left. Overall it was disappointing as I've always previously enjoyed it. That said the service was good, as was the atmosphere. I think we will stick with brunch.
As a couple of one strict veggie and one strictly no veggie it can be hard to find a restaurant where we can both get a meal that blows us away. Forage did this powerfully. We did our research for a special occasion and wanted a restaurant that not only provided great food and wine but did it with local, sustainable and well thought out food.
We pre-read the menu and were excited before even getting there. From the moment we walked in service was excellent seated in 5 mins (we were 10 mins early for our table).
Our server (Jackson) was on the ball and very happy to take the time to chat us through the menu and how the sharing plate concept works at Forage. Overall service was just excellent and attentive.
Upon hearing my other half was a veggie he made special effort to ensure their needs were met in terms of preferred and on preferred items and also some solid recommendations on the veggie front.
We had the pan bread and Gnocchi to start. Simply out of this world. Both of them. Never had Gnocchi as good.
For mains i had the Bison with hay-smoked potatoes.... just a wonderful looking and tasting plate of food. Cooked to perfection.
My other half had the roast cabbage and just a massive plate of awesome tasting and presented veg. I ended up eating a whole bunch of them too.
The wine menu is all BC VQA wine, as lover of Ozzie, Spanish and Argentinean big hitting Reds i did hold some fears in this regard. Boy was i wrong. A bottle of Burrowing Owl Syrah hit the pallet good and hard as was stunning. I will now be adding BC VQA wine to my list of things to get to know better in 2018.
Desert was a simple but dam tasty apple pie. Just lovely.
We have already made plans to come back in Jan to try all the other things on the menu.
Simply just go there. Food is amazing, decor and feel is great, food is stunning wine and cocktails are great. Cant recommend this place enough
This was my second visit to forage - and the second time I drove up from Seattle just to eat here. It was just as fantastic as I remember - warm ambiance, knowledgeable and very friendly staff, and excellent food. They truly understand how to showcase seasonal ingredients and find ways to make even cabbage something exciting to eat. But there is nothing pretentious about this place - there is an ease and comfort of the service that allow the staff to treat you as friends, not as meal tickets.
I took my father here - a foodie before the term existed - and he was blown away. We enjoyed oysters, local mushrooms, halibut, root vegetables, and chocolate galore. Every combination enhanced the natural flavors of each ingredient, not overshadowed. At one point my dad mentioned that we would be sharing a dessert wine at the end of the evening, and our server not only split the pour into 2 glasses without request, but when I was taking forever to drink my share, he brought a splash of an earlier wine we had enjoyed for my dad to sip on. CLASSY.
I will absolutely be making the trek back to this restaurant - for years to come, as I hope it will become be a Vancouver mainstay!
The night was so impressive with excellent service and food. The display and tastes of food were terrific and we all satisfied. It looked like small portions, but we ended up with a full stomach that cannot fit any desserts sadly. I will definitely come back to try other menus with dessert and want to try their awesome brunch :)
