Shawn Shepherd, owner of Wahoo Seafood Grill, grew up helping his mom cook for his six siblings. His family moved from Ohio to Tennessee to Alabama and then to Mississippi, but no matter where they lived, you could always find Shepherd learning how to create a new dishes alongside family, friends, and neighbors... anyone who would let him in their kitchen. He especially loved visiting his grandfather, who owned a seafood restaurant in Pennsylvania. When Shepherd joined the Navy, he wanted to be a cook, but the Navy wouldn't let him because his testing scores were too high. After nearly 7 years, he was honorably discharged and he worked as a cook by day and bartender by night. Eventually, he opened his first restaurant, Shepherd's, in 1999.He went on to operate several successful restaurants after that, and in 2013, he partnered with Butch Monaghan. Together, they opened Wahoo Seafood Grill in Gainesville followed by the Tallahassee location in 2015.

    Virtually no one around Gainesville knows where Eleo Hotel or Covey Kitchen is located nor have they even heard of them. That is sad because the service in the restaurant is very good and the food is delicious. The only problem for me is that the ambience is not fine restaurant but Florida hotel restaurant. It was my guest’s birthday which was posted on my reservation but the server was not made aware. Immediately upon my telling her she comped one of the desserts. I certainly hope to return to Covey Kitchen!

    Overall the staff and service were fantastic. The steaks were also perfectly cooked and delicious. However, our crab cake appetizer and lobster tail both arrived cold and under cooked. The server and manager both were very apologetic and made it right, but at this price point and their reputation it was surprising. The men’s bathroom is also in need of a makeover with dirty looking toilets and a broken sink ( the handle to sink was broken and laying on the countertop). I would return but was surprised about the food preparation misses.

    Not that it was bad, I just was not happy with a resolution of a major problem we had while dinning at Pearls. There was a 10 inch human hair right in the middle of my Plate which I discovered after taken a few bites. The waste guy witnessed this event. He quickly removed the plate from our table (all correct). Next thing I knew was a new poorly plated stake was returned to the table in a timely manner. Needless to say, I was no longer hungry. A credit for that stake should have been offered. Poor customer service. Two people and the total was $300.... awful
