Fontina Grille Ratings and Reviews
The best part about Fontina Grille: It is a friendly, neighborhood restaurant where the owners care enough to stop by every table and make sure everything is good. But that only works if the food is good, and they do a wonderful job from Italian entres to dinner salads. Prices are more than fair. For some not familiar with King Farm, it is a bit hard to find, but it is worth looking for.
Went for Valentine's day and it was amazing. The wait was a little long but that's to be expected on a day like this. Food was on point and delicious. With some Italian places I get tired of the food midway but not this time(I stopped cause I got full). We had fried calimari which was fried perfectly, I had pene w/broccoli I added shrimp and girlfriend had capalinni d'angelo. It was a great first experience and I would recommend this place!
We had Caesar Salad, Pizza and wine. The salad was ok, but lacked garlic which in my mind defines along with anchovies good Caesar. The pizza was ok too. The crust, though was greasy and not very crisp. It had plenty of pepperoni, sausage and mushrooms with a sprinkling of green peppers. The sausage was unusual in that it was slices from a stick rather than crumbles. I've had other Italian dishes here that were much better than the pizza.
It took the server a while to bring the check, making the excuse that he did not hear me the first time I asked for it.
Was not at all impressed, maitre d asked us for our drink order and never returned. When we sat down, we told him it was our first time and were celebrating a birthday to which he responded "I will bring you a sample of desserts for your friend" since it was our first time. That never happened. Food was marginal.
Fontina Grille offers an excellent menu and fanatic service. I've been there multiple times for happy hour, family celebrations, work lunches, and casual get togethers.
Most recently we were there with a party of 12, 6 adults and 6 children. All of the servers and wait staff were awesome. Completely patient with the kids, and great service without being overwhelming while the adults chatted.
I love their pizzas, and they have my favorite salad (salmon). Everything I have ordered, from lunch to dinner to happy hour appetizers had been great. It's a great go to location!
This has become our "go to" place for red sauce and pasta, decent Italian comfort food, good service and a comfortable ambiance. Wife had spaghetti and meatballs, a good basic dish, well executed and I had a pizza for one, relatively thin crust with steak etc, also very good. Most entrees include a side salad which is also pretty decent. All in all worth a visit.
Tried Fontina Grille based on reviews and so glad we did. The chicken picata was delicious as was the margarita chicken. Both came with soup or salad and pasta. A perfect sized portion and a very good value at $18. Service was friendly and efficient. Food came out quickly. Place was very busy on a Friday night. Good to make a reservation. We will definitely return next time we're in the area.
This is a nice friendly neighborhood place. The food is good enough but not great but it is a good value as prices are moderate. We usually get good service and we did this time. My only real objection is the number of patrons who stand outside the door to the restaurant and smoke. Bad aroma when entering
Never again on Friday at lunchtime. While I usually eat out in Rockville only on a Saturday or Sunday, I knew that Fontina offers lunch buffet during the week, so I requested a table by a window away from the buffet tables and large parties. Shortly after I was seated halfway back from the buffet tables, the restaurant began to fill, including three large, noisy parties near me. It seemed that the focus of the kitchen and wait staff was on servicing the buffet tables and on taking drink orders from the parties that were there for the buffet (clue: no menus). It took 20- minutes for my appetizer to come out. Another 25 minutes later, as I was starting my entree, someone in a stream of buffet customers going to the back of the restaurant bumped my table and toppled my glass of red wine. My brand new book was soaked as was my leather coat on the vacant chair . My server, who had been focused elsewhere, did spring into action, moving me to another table, wiping off my leather coat, and sopping up the spilled wine. He also brought a replacement for the spilled wine. When I received my check, I signed it and added my credit card. When a check and my credit card were returned, the check was not mine, but for the party at the table where I had originally sat. It took another ten minutes to resolve that problem. I do not blame the kitchen or my server for the bad experience. I blame management for not creating a section at the very back of the restaurant for those choosing to dine from the menu and assigning at least one server to that section exclusively. Not only would the customers be much happier; the staff would be less stressed.
We left disappointed. The menu looked terrific. The place was very crowded. It was so crowded that the noise level made it impossible to speak to my tablemate or hear what the server was asking or saying. It felt that they were so busy (good for them) that the delivery on the product was severely compromised. The food came out having cooled from sitting too long before being delivered to the table. The follow up service was non-existent. Everyone tried hard, and was obviously working hard, but as the customer, it fell very flat. I wish them well but don't expect to be back.
While not a "destination" restaurant, it is a very good neighborhood restaurant. The ingredients in the dishes are consistently very good, but the flavors are mild--possibly reflecting the preferences of the many families that dine there. The list of wines by the glass is short, but well chosen and reasonably priced (Kim Crawford sauvignon blanc for $9.00) The service is attentive. The ambiance has recently been improved by lightening the dark color of the long interior wall. Still, the brown furniture and floors make the restaurant feel darker than it need be as there are many windows.
No one went above and beyond. Our server was doing the bare minimum. We watched the servers sing happy birthday and they didn't even put in effort. No one should look miserable singing happy birthday even if it's the last thing they want to do. I went to celebrate my birthday but didn't even want to tell them because of how little they cared about the other table. The good news: the food was great.
