Fontina Grille, in the King Farm, offers the best of the best when it comes to oven-fired pizzas, fresh fish, gourmet pastas, bountiful salads and sandwiches. The granite bar divides two dining areas. To the left, a full service carry out counter offering everything from pizza and pasta, to ribeye steak and Lavazza coffee and cappuccino. To the right, the casual but elegant dining area can seat about 125 people, with a back area for semi-private parties and corporate events. Fontina Grille also offers private and corporate catering, with a variety of options to suit any budget.

Never again on Friday at lunchtime. While I usually eat out in Rockville only on a Saturday or Sunday, I knew that Fontina offers lunch buffet during the week, so I requested a table by a window away from the buffet tables and large parties. Shortly after I was seated halfway back from the buffet tables, the restaurant began to fill, including three large, noisy parties near me. It seemed that the focus of the kitchen and wait staff was on servicing the buffet tables and on taking drink orders from the parties that were there for the buffet (clue: no menus). It took 20- minutes for my appetizer to come out. Another 25 minutes later, as I was starting my entree, someone in a stream of buffet customers going to the back of the restaurant bumped my table and toppled my glass of red wine. My brand new book was soaked as was my leather coat on the vacant chair . My server, who had been focused elsewhere, did spring into action, moving me to another table, wiping off my leather coat, and sopping up the spilled wine. He also brought a replacement for the spilled wine. When I received my check, I signed it and added my credit card. When a check and my credit card were returned, the check was not mine, but for the party at the table where I had originally sat. It took another ten minutes to resolve that problem. I do not blame the kitchen or my server for the bad experience. I blame management for not creating a section at the very back of the restaurant for those choosing to dine from the menu and assigning at least one server to that section exclusively. Not only would the customers be much happier; the staff would be less stressed.
We left disappointed. The menu looked terrific. The place was very crowded. It was so crowded that the noise level made it impossible to speak to my tablemate or hear what the server was asking or saying. It felt that they were so busy (good for them) that the delivery on the product was severely compromised. The food came out having cooled from sitting too long before being delivered to the table. The follow up service was non-existent. Everyone tried hard, and was obviously working hard, but as the customer, it fell very flat. I wish them well but don't expect to be back.
While not a "destination" restaurant, it is a very good neighborhood restaurant. The ingredients in the dishes are consistently very good, but the flavors are mild--possibly reflecting the preferences of the many families that dine there. The list of wines by the glass is short, but well chosen and reasonably priced (Kim Crawford sauvignon blanc for $9.00) The service is attentive. The ambiance has recently been improved by lightening the dark color of the long interior wall. Still, the brown furniture and floors make the restaurant feel darker than it need be as there are many windows.
No one went above and beyond. Our server was doing the bare minimum. We watched the servers sing happy birthday and they didn't even put in effort. No one should look miserable singing happy birthday even if it's the last thing they want to do. I went to celebrate my birthday but didn't even want to tell them because of how little they cared about the other table. The good news: the food was great.
While the kitchen uses very good ingredients, it is rather timid in the use of herbs and spices. The Mozzarella Caprese had a lot of cheese and tomato, but it had almost no Balsamico. The Salmon & Shrimp was also a bit bland. Only the dressing on the Caesar Salad had a robust flavor. The list of wines by the glass is well chosen and very reasonably priced. I know of no other MoCo restaurant where a six ounce pour of Kim Crawford sauvignon blanc is priced at $9. I am not a fan of the decor, but lightening the dark color of the dark red east wall is a significant improvement.
Terrible Service - not friendly or professional - failed to mention the 'kitchen was closed' halfway through the meal. Didn't offer us another drink or to see a dessert menu. Next time don't seat people if you do not plan to let them have a restaurant experience.
We had a group of 16 celebrating an organization who breed/train service dogs for our wounded warriors- Warrior Canine Connection. We are a group of supporters in town for the annual graduation ceremony. We are from all over the US and Canada. We have shared these dinners for the last 4 years. This was our first time at FG. Erica was our main server. The food was very good, service and support staff were also very good and friendly. There are only 2 things I would like the management to be aware - having some type of option for separate checks or even groups of 4 people on 1 check would have made paying bill easier. Table size-At the last minute, we had 2 people cancel, which had our party go from 18 to 16. Our table though was originally set for 18, utilizing 2 heads of table. If we had the original number of 18 people at our table, it would have been very uncomfortable and squeezed. Having been in the service industry for 10 years I understand the seating process, so I would definitely have your staff/manager sit down with no elbow room and try and eat. That can ruin any experience. The parking was so convenient. We expect to be back next Fall for Graduation and I plan on making reservations again. Thank you. Carol
Used to be great for lunch business meetings but now too noisy since they started the buffet. Must attract different crowd now. I asked for quite table and was seated in middle of room in what appears to be workers and construction folks coming for a cheap buffet lunch. Nothing wrong with the crowd just lost a nice quite business meeting place.
We've been dining regularly at Fontina Grille for several years and we just love this place. The staff is always so welcoming and our regular server, Reza, is absolutely superb. He is so incredibly diligent in ensuring we have everything we need without hovering all over us. The cuisine is exceptional, the portions more than ample (we usually take home half our meal and it makes a wonderful leftover) and never disappoints. We highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a nice, quiet meal (although they do a fine job accommodating larger groups as well) as their non-Italian entrees are every bit as delicious as their Italian specialties.
Straightforward neighborhood Italian restaurant with a standard menu of traditional Italian-American food. Everything was competently prepared without surprises, either good or bad. If you are specifically looking for Southern Italian cuisine in the Kings Farm area, give it a try. The prices were very reasonable.
Have visited several times and never been disappointed. Bruschetta was quite good this evening, although bread could have been toasted a bit more so topping did not saturate bread. Eggplant, chicken parma, chicken saltimbocca and salmon were all wonderful. Minestrone and both house and Caesar salads were fresh and delicious. Homemade minestrone soup was exceptional. Generous portions and great wait staff. Accommodated our food allergies without any problems. Would highly recommend, although it can be a bit noisy if the restaurant is full. Good for dates, special occasions and families -- we are a family of all adults and table next to us was a dad with his two young daughters. We all were enjoying ourselves.
Heard about this place on FOX5 a few years back....they raved about it. For my experience it was just "ok" nothing a true Italian would make but a good replica. Food came out quick, waitress acted like she hated her job but remained friendly... Overall this place is ok if your in tge area and want American food that's happens to cook Italian dishes without the robust flavor
Fontina Grill in King Farm is a great place to get some very tasty Italian dishes. They are accommodating and very client oriented. Food and service were great. Veal in my dish was very tender and flavorful as one would expect...no gristle, like sometimes you find in restaurant veal. Shrimp was grilled to perfection and very flavorful as well!
The owner or manager greeted us with a smile, the young man who saw us leaving at the end of the meal asked us how we enjoyed the meal with a smile and he greeted is with a smile, the food I ate was the first time I tried it and it was delicious, the house wine was excellent, the server was kind and considerate, we could sit at the table after the meal for quite some time. A wonderful Saturday evening experience, for sure!
Was able to enjoy some outdoor seating before the warm weather season ends. Came to dinner with some friends and was pleasantly surprised by the ladies night drink specials. Have always enjoyed this cozy, neighborhood restaurant which offers lunch buffets and delicious pasta entrees and pizza.
We always enjoy supporting our neighborhood restaurant. We came with 3 friends and they easily accommodated the extra person (we had reserved for four but actually had five). Everyone enjoyed the meal--large delicious portions, exceptional value. The service was outstanding.
The Eggplant Parmesan was horrendous. Worst I've ever had. Not cooked well. Coating was soggy and didn't adhere to the eggplant so it turned into a sloppy mess on a bed of pasta. That said, the salad, bread and pizza was excellent! Happy that they offer 2 eggplant entrees. Will try the Eggplant Rollatini next time.
