Folk's Folly Prime Steak House
Native son Humphrey Folk, Jr. was a prominent and shrewd developer, whose hard work carried him all over the country, cultivating his sincere appreciation of food and fine wine.
Undaunted by a complete lack of restaurant or culinary experience, he decided to convert a quaint and intimate house into a small eatery. His peers offered little encouragement, so he added the word “folly” to his own name, and Memphis’ Original Prime Steak House was born.
With only a gentleman's handshake to signify agreement, Humphrey Folk welcomed famed Memphis restaurateur Thomas Boggs as managing partner of Folk's Folly in 2003.
This partnership built the bridge to the next generation and Folk's Folly Prime Steak House remains a family affair.
Steaks were not tender and had no taste. Definitely not worth the money. Sides were ok but
Not great. The pecan pie tasted like it was bought at Kroger. Disappointing on a special day.
Excellent place- awesome food, great service, and cool atmosphere. Highly recommend if in Memphis!
My daughter lives in Memphis and I traveled to visit with her and her boyfriend and treat them to a nice steak dinner this past Saturday evening. We had visited your restaurant about a month ago and enjoyed ourselves a great deal and were particularly pleased to have met Chelsea who was our waiter then. We asked for her again this time and luckily she was working on Saturday night. We do love your menu and the specials you seem to have on weekend nights but frankly I believe we have returned and will continue to return to Folks Folly is because of Chelsea. She knows your menu well, makes great recommendations and in spite of the fact that Saturday night was busy with pre Fathers Day gatherings she balanced a good sized amount of customers and made us feel welcome.
One final thought. I’ve been fortunate to dine in countless steak houses throughout the US and in many countries around the world, at least the 50 in number. Without sounding hyperbolic I do believe you are one of the best I’ve visited. You staff well, have a varied wine list and the steaks are terrific. And although zero good steak houses are inexpensive, I believe your pricing is fair and in line with the level of food quality you offer.
Keep up the good work, we’ll be returning soon.
Great!!! Experience. Good food and service. Must go and try!!
We enjoyed every moment of our experience. This restaurant is really a fine dining establishment and you get what you pay for.
I took my daughter for a father daughter dinner for her 16th Birthday. They made her feel special with that delicious caramel cake, balloons and candle.
Went for our anniversary, food and service were fantastic.
Staff is phenomenal. Steaks and appetizers superb. We tried a “new” side dish with green beans that was less than superb but others exceeded our expectations. Pricey but well worth it for a special date night or important business meeting.
The food was delicious and not too over-priced. I recommend the Lobster and Truffle Mac 'n' Cheese if available. The service was second to none. Our server was Shauna and she was incredible. This extended to the management level as Carlos, Assistant Manager, checked on us several times throughout our evening, but not too often as to be an annoyance. My wife and I were very impressed with Folk's Folly. Highly recommended.
The restaurant staff was amazing! The serves and managers came to our table numerous times making sure we were okay. I went for my husband birthday and they even brought him out a small caramel cake with a candle. That was really generous of them! The only disadvantage was the valet staff wasn't friendly. Once we arrive they never assisted to park our car's. However, they made sure the luxury cars were treated right. If I had to change one thing about my experience that would be teaching the valet staff how to treat everyone.
Awesome food. Great service.
My wife and I celebrated our anniversary dinner there. The food was excellent! My wife has the Makers Mark Filet Medallions and a caprese salad, while I had the Cowboy Ribeye with Grit Cakes. Excellent quality of food and the staff was amazing! Great wine selection also.
Outstanding as usual. From hostess to servers, to table bussers and management, we were greeted with Happy Anniversary throughout the evening. We were seated in the front room for the first time in the 22 years we have been going there. The room had a few too many tables, rather close together, so the normal quiet ambience was replaced with louder conversations from one end of the room to the other. Wine selection is fantastic, but slightly higher in price than other restaurants for our usual celebration selection is why value rated 3 stars instead of 5.
Steaks were perfectly cooked. The spinach casserole was delicious! Server was friendly and knowledgeable.
My dining experience is always excellent!!! I enjoyed it! And my mother enjoyed too! Please stay the same! The food was delicious! I have visited other resturants in Memphis and the customer service and experience lacked on many levels. Thank you!! And we will definitely return soon!
The food and service was outstanding. It was a great time and we will return and advise others to visit.
Food was wonderful! Service was even better!! Creme brulee was AMAZING!!
Knocks it out of the park every time! Wonderful!
This long term staple of the Memphis scene I fear is falling only on its historic performance. Plenty of opportunity to improve from the dated leopard print carpet that holds all unwanted odors to the dish cleaning, trash can and staging station next to our table. There were bussers frequently standing around the cleaning station, which happened to be next to our table. The only saving grace was Sara our server tried to make the most of our table. Our VERY expensive lobster was over cooked, asparagus was burned, bread was hard, pecan pie remined us of a Sara Lee or Sodexo product. It was VERY dissappointing and not how I like to spend almost $300 for two people.
We got a private dining room via OpenTable. Usually, a request has to be made directly to the restaurant directly. We were very pleased. Rose, our server, was a pure delight !!! She was very attentive without being an annoyance and answered all questions and made suggestions that were spot on. Pace of courses was great. We were not rushed. First time visit for both of us but sure it won’t be the last.
I took my wife to Folk’s Folly for her birthday cause the last time we went for mine, everything was amazing- the food, the service, the generosity of the staff. However, this time, not so much. Parker was our server, who did an excellent job going over the specials and seeing that we were taken care of. After he told us about the specials and items that were not listed on the menu, we were sold and decided to get the 40oz porterhouse Oscar style and made it surf and turf. The presentation of the food was great when it came to the table. We really thought we were going to enjoy our food but that was not the case. After the first cut, we had to send it back cause the plate was hot but the steak was cold. Parker took the food back to have the temp raised. It was brought back out by who we guess was one of the kitchen managers, perhaps. The temp was raised and we thought we were about to enjoy a delicious steak. Well, the steak was flavorless. It tasted as if the steak had only been cooked on the grill and no seasoning had been added at all, not even salt and pepper. That was the last thing we expected from Folk’s Folly. We tried to muster the strength to get through the bland steak and decided to eat the lobster tail before it got too cold. I’m not exactly sure what happened during this trip and maybe we just got the wrong steak but I sure was disappointed in my food this evening. We usually go to Capital Grill but I decided to bring her to Folk’s Folly for her birthday this year as we had not been since mine last year and wanted it again based on previous experiences. I don’t blame Parker at all cause he performed his job well and was very knowledgeable of the menu but I did not have the heart to lie to him again about the subpar taste of the porterhouse. I honestly think it will be a while before we go back and if we do, we’ll be sure to order something else like maybe the ribeye or fillet.
Throughly enjoyed the atmosphere and dining experience. Food was good. Steak was awesome but the lobster was a bit over cooked. Appetizers were amazing. Service was top of the line.
Service was great, however, the two lobster tails we were served were incorrectly cooked and tough and stringy.
Steak very good, salads very good, but the veggies were not good. Veg of the day was awful and lyonnaise potatoes were more like potato chips with a glob of sautéed onions thrown on top.
We have been visiting FF for over 25 years, and typically our food is excellent. However, this time my wife's steak was not cooked to the right temperature. They immediate took the steak back to cook it longer. Unfortunately, when the steak came back, it was overly charred and was no longer edible. Again, this has not been our history with FF. They did offer to cook a new steak and promptly removed the cost from our bill.
Magnificent food, magnificent service! We love Folk’s Folly!
Everything was awesome except our server. Didn't bother to tell us (or the tables around us) what the specials were. When asked a question she would pull out a flashlight and look through the menu as if we hadn't already done so, and then tell us inaccurate information. They do in fact carry rosé wines. She greeted us with a happy anniversary and then proceeded to tell my wife happy birthday five times. We had to repeat things several times in a quiet restaurant because "honey I can't hear a thing."Luckily, the bus boys were amazing, and one even sold a special to the table next to us because he had the foresight to tell them the specials because the server didn't. It felt like the sever was probably hired in 1977 and somehow managed to not get fired yet. But then, if you have been there that long, you shouldn't need to get the flashlight out to read the menu at me when I just read it. Basically, this lady should be taking short orders at the Waffle House and those bussers need a promotion. Sad that they would allow this kind of service at that price point.
My wife and I had a wondeful experience. Fair price for outstanding environment, food, and service. The steaks are mouthwatering.
Our steaks and sides were great. However, the waitress was apparently new to Folk's Folly as some of her behavior would lead one to think we were at Chili's rather than a fine dining establishment.
The waiter was wonderful, knowledgeable about the menu. Ambiance was very nice. Food was extremely good.
We were there on a Friday night in mid-May, so there were large parties that included celebrating graduates and their families and friends. It was loud! But understandable. 😊The food was outstanding and the service impeccable. Loved it!
The service was exceptional but the Waygu bone in steak was disappointing. The meat was extremely rubbery and dry except the slices closest to the bone. Very disappointing for $110 steak.
best salmon ever loved the environment and atmosphere great experience cant wait to go back!!!!!
I’ve been coming to the restaurant for about 9 years. This by far has been my worst experience.. I do understand that it was mother’s day and holidays are extra congested. I made my reservation weeks in advance. When we arrived the young lady took us all the way to the back to a room that was well lit and cold. Not my normal experience of the restaurant so I asked to be moved. That took about 8 mins. And my mom was on a cane. Why would you have her climb up and down stairs? Then they sat us by the stair where the workers were coming back and forward down the steps. To be honest that table should be moved. Not a good place for a table. The waitress was very nice! Great personality.. when we get our food my crab legs were over cooked. I didn’t want to make a fuss. I ordered a pound and a half. My Mac and cheese was dry they over cooked it. However I did sent that back. My brother twice baked wasn’t good as usual.. we came last year for mother’s day. It was no problem with multiple checks but this year we were told they can’t be split. The manger came over and handled that issue. He showed us it was on the menu. With coming there 9 years I don’t need a menu. And my family over looked it.
The food is always great!!! My mom enjoyed herself and will be back again soon. Everything was great!!!!
I was there for Mother’s Day Brunch, and I was hoping for more of a brunch menu. It was basically the regular menu. I love folks folly, but I won’t do MD brunch there again.
Overpriced and desserts were not good at all. Service was excellent and it is normally a great place to eat. Steak was good, but very disappointed in the desserts.
Folk's Folly is a family favorite for the most special of occasions or celebrations because every dish is an exquisite culinary delight, every server we've had has been very dedicated to providing us with an awesome evening, and we love the ambiance of this iconic Memphis destination. We love the history of Folk's Folly with the photos of famous visitors who dined there. The best steak I've ever eaten in in my life is the Folk's Folly's bone-in fillet which is truly phenomenal! If you've never eaten at Folk's Folly, you're missing out on Memphis' premiere steakhouse with an incredible wine collection.
Enjoyed total experience food delicious and Rose so nice
Dinner was fabulous! Service was amazing! Elisha did a super job! We will definitely be back when we have some extra $$$, this was an extra special occasion!
