Floriana Ratings and Reviews
I love this restaurant and, personally, have never been disappointed by the food or the friendly service. This time out I ordered the exquisite beef short ribs (someone at another table also ordered this dish and happily said, "This is like cake.") Floriana deserves 5 stars and only receives 4 this time around since but my wife thought the short ribs ravioli - which I had before - tasted more like the tortolloni mignon, or not as flavorful as the short ribs ravioli, and seemed to be missing the flavor of "shaved truffles."
Every thing on the menu looked so good that we all had difficulty choosing. Regardless none were disappointed. Often when we go out, several of us end up ordering the same thing due to similar tastes and a comparatively limited menu.
Food was excellent, reasonably priced with an extensive wine list. Salads and desert were equally excellent. The location in Dupont Circle area on 17th is great and we had a table near the window so watching the street scene was entertaining although the first floor dining room had such a nice ambiance that we really didn't need to and since the noise level was low to moderate we had no problem with dinner conversation.
Service was excellent and the server was well informed and helpful with menu selections.
The food was delicious, as always, but the service was slow. Our water glasses were not refilled regularly, and we were never asked if we wanted another bottle of wine. The waiter took our credit cards for the bill and then came back 10 min later to inform us the credit card machine was down and that they were working on the issue...20 min later, they still hadn't charged our cards, or asked if we'd prefer to pay in cash. They did send a complimentary dessert to the table, though we would have preferred wine! Overall we understand that issues sometimes arise and we still love Floriana and will be back, but service could have been better.
I went to Floriana with my GF on Friday (was a last minute decision and managed to get a reservation) and I was very pleasantly surprised about this place. It seems that Floriana extends over three floors (bottom is the Bar, 1st the restaurant and 2nd seems to be part the restaurant as well, but there was a private party) and it has a very nice interior. The service was very attentive and the food was absolutely great (some of the best Italian I had for quite a while). I was very pleasantly surprised with the Lasagna, because I have not seen a Lasagna being made in the US with a Bechamel Sauce in the 20 years that I have lived here. Bit on the pricey site, but absolutely worth it.
We have been thinking to try this restaurant for some time, after reading good reviews and others not so good, the latter mostly complaining that the food was bland. In fact, although our entries were good, the whole experience was exactly bland...Good Italian food, but nothing unforgettable. The list of desserts includes 4 or 5 options...but only 2 were available! I am not sure I would return, considering all the offers in DC.
I was not familiar with Floriana until this visit, but it certainly lived up to it's reputation. Cozy and casual, we had a small party there for dinner Sunday night. We were seated promptly (even before our scheduled reservation time!) and the service was impeccable. We had a couple of appetizers (the calamari was scrumptous) and 5 different entrees, all of which were delicious. The tortellini was excellent, as were the beef and wild mushroom ravioli. We also split a bottle of malbec, had some coffee, and my daughter had dessert- I recommend the Nutella cheesecake. It is not a big venue, but they have a bar downstairs if you have to wait. We were unhurried, and enjoyed lingering for a bit. We felt very much welcome and will be back!
This was my first visit to Floriana. The food itself was great, with good portion sizes, a variety of dishes, and excellent quality of everything we ordered. However, our service was very slow to start--it took almost 30 minutes from the time we sat down at our exact reservation time until the time our server finally delivered the bottle of wine we had initially chosen and we were able to order our meal. He blamed it on a large group he was serving, but it seemed like every other table around us had no issue with their service despite the busy atmosphere. After that initial hiccup, the service was smooth with no delay. Despite the initial hiccup in service, I would definitely visit Floriana again.
First the food is fantastic. Treat the table to the tortellini mingon as an appetizer and then go for one of the main courses for dinner. Second, the atmosphere outside on 17th street in Dupont is fantastic. Many ot the other restaraunts on that strip are bars first. Floriana is the opposite - a great restauraunt that happens to have a bar.
After a less than stellar performance last week in the kitchen, Floriana restored our confidence in exceptional cuisine and superb wines (at half price on Sundays and Wednesdays). Steered to a California cabernet (Stonestreet), we could not have been more pleased. The filet mignon was done to perfection (first time selected). Short ribs ravioli was nice but did not have enough of the ribs taste to make it substantial. Salmon tartare was a bit unusual (in a martini glass) and tasty only if one scooped to the base to pick up the guacamole... Soupe was exceptional. Just a wonderful evening at a wonderful place.
This is a great restaurant with service better than most. On the night we went the food was very slow to come out. My friends had eaten there before and said that the meals normally were served quite fast. We needed to catch up so that was ok. Food was served hot and tasted great. The bread and pesto garlic sauce was outstanding and the food was hot when it arrived. It was a good experience and I'll be back.
Floriana was a lovely place for fine Northern Italian dining. Portions were generous, and the food quite good, although one of my friends complained her dish was bland. The bar was small and intimate, and Sunday night was a good choice with all wine selections at half price. I would (and did) recommend it to friends.
The restaurant is quaint. It is located in an older home in the DuPont Circle area.
Food was good. Lasagna portion size was huge. Sea Scallops were seared to perfection and served over a creamy mixture of corn and spicy sausage.
The Cesar Salad was not worth the $9.00 charge. Bottled wine was half price on Sunday. A good value.
We chose Floriana's because it was close to our hotel and it turned out to be a real gem. It is a small restaurant that serves great food with excellent service and at reasonable prices. The salmon and short ribs were both delicious. We liked the place so much that we returned a few nights later, had totally different selections and were blown away again. Great restaurant!!
While it was half price wine the first choice was unavailable. One diner ordered fish and it was to be served with brussell
sprouts when it was placed in front of her the server informed her that they were out of brussell sprouts and they gave her asparagus instead. We found that quite odd.
That being said all four dinners were excellent.
Everyone in my group seemed happy with their food, but my Brussels sprouts were burned and inedible. Also very small, stingy portions of vegetables. The soup was ostentatiously prepared at the table (what?), all a bit precious. But the age of the place, the warmth of the service were unusually nice.
third visit to Floriana and we were looking forward to it based on previous experiences. Our table was ready upon our arrival and it was outside on the patio so we could enjoy the gorgeous fall weather. two servers approached our table individually asking if our orders were taken prior to even providing a glass of water..there was some confusion. our appetizer was good (calamari) and the house bread with garlic pesto was delish...we ordered a bottle of wine and our entrees. Our waiter was all about business the entire dinner time...no much chit chat...two of the three entrees arrived hot, one was luke warm/partially cold. we had to ask 3 time for additional bread to be provided. all in all just ok not great or spectacular!
Our evening spent dinning at Floriana exceeded expectations. We went based on a recommendation from our neighbors and were not disappointed. We were lucky enough to be seated at an outside table which provided an opportunity to enjoy the cool evening and atmosphere of the surrounding neighborhood. The waiter was knowledgeable and provides excellent recommendations (drinks and food). Would highly recommend the new fall entrée short rib Ravioli and wine pairing. Oh and by the way we ran into our neighbors going to dine there again as we were leaving...
Our family of 4 went for afternoon meal and we loved it. Living in France for 3 years sets reasonably high bar to eat out. We enjoyed it so much, we returned...and it happened to be on 1/2 price wine day- double winner - and enjoyed the recommendation from the waiter. our kids are 12 and 14 and love food too. The building is lovely ...reminds me of unique restos and cafes in Paris.
I have been to Floriana probably about 5 times in the last 3-4 years. I would still recommend it but, unfortunately, this was our least enjoyable experience. The gnocchi pomodoro did not have the kind of flavor I'm used to getting there, though the short rib ravioli was delicious. The calamari and bread/dipping pesto was also excellent. Our waitress was a little over-bearing, and she didn't take much time to tell us about the dishes or recommend a wine.
