About Permanently Closed - Flora
This restaurant is permanently closed.
In 1996, flora opened in Arlington, Massachusetts in the renovated Arlington Five Cent Savings Bank building. Its dramatic barrel-vaulted ceiling and two story windows presented the perfect location. Simple but sophisticated fare in an elegant atmosphere provides flora patrons with the best experience in the area.
Notable entres at flora include a roasted Giannone half chicken with a lemon-rosemary pan sauce, lamb fricassee, porcini spaetzle and white miso-honey glazed salmon. The meal is complete with the house specialty, cinnamon almond croissant bread pudding served with chocolate sauce and whipped cream. For a lighter dessert option, there is house made blackberry sorbet.

As always we had a perfect evening at flora. Food, service, ambiance excellent. I had a salad of sugar snap peas, strawberries, bitter greens, pistachio studded goat cheese, followed by a perfect pork loin with a fruited sauce, grilled asparagus and sweet potatoes. Bob and Mary Jo Sargent really know how to please every palate in grand style. So happy to have such an extraordinary restaurant in our neighborhood. Bon Appetit!
We will miss Flora immensely! this is a great restaurant with a wonderful history of 20 years, and we look forward to seeing a new restaurant blossom in its place. But for now, we salute the many years of great hospitality, food and memories of family celebrations -- all in an artful atmosphere delivered by Mary Jo and Bob Sargent. We wish them all the best.
Excellent food spoiled by rushed service. We ordered drinks and two courses all at once. What a mistake. There was a slight delay between drinks and the hot course, but it was ditch the drink or eat the food cold. If they wanted to go home early, they should not have seated us.
We've dined at Flora sporadically from their first week. This was our last visit. The food was always at least very good. Too bad to leave on such a sour note.
Flora is and has been such a fantastic restaurant - one of the best in Boston. It has deserved far more praise than it has gotten. But Flora's loyal fans know how extraordinary - and beautifully plated - the food is. We are broken hearted that it is closing.
An enjoyable meal for both myself and my wife, who is vegetarian. Each dish (beet soup, grilled asparagus appetizer, roast chicken (great preparation) and gnocchi as entrees, and cheesecake (dessert) were very well prepared and quite tasty. Unfortunately, it seems that the place is soon to close and to be transitioned to a new concept - hopefully some of the old traditions will be passed on.
Every single thing we ordered was outstanding. We have been long term Flora goers, and we have NEVER had anything at Flora that was not really good. My younger daughter was with us, and as a very picky eater she was RAVING about the beet soup, the soba noodle and calamari appetizers and her salmon entree. We all loved these items also, and my husband had his beloved roast chicken- almost as good as the famed Gordon Hamersly - a real delight.
I wish I could replicate it!
Cocktails were good. The chicken and risotto entrees were great. Dessert was very good. Spotted a burger being delivered to the other room during the dinner and learned that a burger is available at the bar. Went back two nights later and enjoyed a really good burger at the bar.
We went for an early dinner for my daughter's birthday. The restaurant was empty as it was 5 pm. The waitstaff was attentive but not intrusive. The risotto appetizer was very good. The entrees were, overall, disappointing. The fish special (red snapper) was overcooked. The pork loin was also overcooked, yet lukewarm. The half chicken was excellent. My son's steak was cooked nicely (medium rare) but the flavor was bland and had a bit of an odd fatty flavor. The list of wines by the glass was good. We skipped dessert.
Title says it all. Came for a special night for a family member. Ordered our food and drinks. As expected, the food was very good. However, the server arrived at the table, talked over everyone, placed the plates in front of the wrong people, talking all the while too loudly to actually hear anyone say where the plates were to go. Eventually, had to interrupt them - quite loudly - and ask him to move the plates to the right spots. Sort of ruined the ambiance at the table.
While I'm glad the food was good, it isn't particularly pleasant to go out for a nice night out and not have the restaurant care who ordered what meal OR be bothered to listen to you.
We will go to Flora again, but not for a special event of any kind.
I brought my entire family to celebrate a combination birthday and Mother's day and the experience was sub par from the beginning. Our orders were taken incorrectly and we had to reiterate a few times. Food was very delayed. A few other parties of comparable size seated well after us received their drinks and appetizers first-same waitress. Late in the game we found out one of our orders couldn't be fulfilled so we had to chose another dish. Seems like they can't handle a full restaurant. Bar was very backed up and the staff wasn't very gracious. I had been before but I think we're done. Too many other options in the area to spend our money and time there.
While our server was great, and the food excellent, the team was not prepared for a full restaurant. After waiting 25 minutes to be seated (with a reservation made weeks before), we then waited almost an hour and a half to be served. This was particularly surprising as there was a limited, prix fixe menu, and particularly uncomfortable, as we had four children with us.
The menu (website and print version) needs to be updated. The menu is meat heavy but there was one vegetarian entree listed. However, when we got to the restaurant the waiter said that entree had been removed from the menu weeks ago. Although both versions of the menu clearly indicated "Spring 2016."
The restaurant could definitely expand their vegetarian options.
We dined at Flora last week - the complimentary bread tasted like some weird spice cakes, not good at all. We ordered the mussels as an appetizer, but the toast it came with was harder than a rock. The lamb fricassee was a glorified stew, and the spices were all off. My wife ordered their special (trout), but there was hardly any sauce and the fish came out warm, not hot. Halfway through it was cold. Not impressed at all.
My boyfriend and I celebrated our 4th anniversary here 4/29. I'd mentioned the special occasion when I made the reservation and when we arrived at the restaurant, they had sprinkled confetti in the shapes of hearts and stars on our table - we loved it and felt it was a nice, thoughtful touch. The food was excellent; service was too.
The menu was small and upscale with some unusual choices. My husband had the Salmon, which he said was cooked with the skin on. He said generally he doesn't like the skin left on, but the way that Flora prepared it, the Salmon was very good. I had the special salad for the evening, a beet and goat cheese concoction. The salad was excellent. Very nice surprise, because I love beet salads and this was better than most. The prices are a bit steep. The wait staff was very friendly and service was good. The atmosphere was a little like a French bistro, which was intimate and friendly, but the way the open rooms were arranged, the noise level was extremely high. There was no music, so I think the acoustics are just bad. Overall, the restaurant is excellent. Perhaps if we had had a table in one of the alcoves, the noise level would have been better.
