About Permanently Closed - Flora
This restaurant is permanently closed.
In 1996, flora opened in Arlington, Massachusetts in the renovated Arlington Five Cent Savings Bank building. Its dramatic barrel-vaulted ceiling and two story windows presented the perfect location. Simple but sophisticated fare in an elegant atmosphere provides flora patrons with the best experience in the area.
Notable entres at flora include a roasted Giannone half chicken with a lemon-rosemary pan sauce, lamb fricassee, porcini spaetzle and white miso-honey glazed salmon. The meal is complete with the house specialty, cinnamon almond croissant bread pudding served with chocolate sauce and whipped cream. For a lighter dessert option, there is house made blackberry sorbet.

Nice welcome from the hostess, gave us seats we requested. Waitress and server were pleasant with impeccable service. Food arrived fairly quickly. Atmosphere was fun and convivial. Bo Winiker Orchestra played at nice sound level. Made some new friends, and danced, laughed and sang! We'll be back on January 28, 2016 - Bo Winiker next gig at Flora.
I did something I'd never done: let somebody else do the cooking on Thanksgiving. What a smart idea! This was a fixed price meal with just the right number of choices. The person I was with had the turkey/dressing/mashed potatoes entrée while I had the steak/green beans/pile o' tiny fried onions. Both were great. Plus, we both took half of it home, so we'd have room for dessert. I thought we might be rushed through our meal, given the day, but we weren't, which was really nice. The only complaint I have about Flora is that I always find it a little hard to hear the others at my table, must be the acoustics. But other than that, great meal.
Not our best experience. Turkey dinner was just piled on our plate, everything was mixed together. The turkey skin was mushy. We had to ask our server to bring us bread and he never asked if we wanted coffee or after dinner drink when he brought us our dessert. He just brought the check . We brought a friend, who had never been there before, and I was a bit embarrassed because I told her how good the food and service was. To be honest, we won't be coming back for another holiday meal.
We went to Flora for Thanksgiving and definitely will be back for other meals. The food was great; we were very impressed with the steak, the side dishes, and the desserts. We also note that the service was excellent and thought Flora did a great job making Thanksgiving awesome.
I would have given this outstanding instead of very good if the fried calamari did not have a very slight fishy taste. This is a first for me -- eat fried calamari all the time and never a fishy taste. Two of us had the slow cooked leg of lamb, and two of us had the flatiron steak. Both were outstanding. Loved our two desserts -- espresso creme brulee and molten lemon cake with raspberry sauce.
My wife and I had dinner at Flora the week of November 16, 2015. What a treat! We hadn't been there for several years and were looking forward to the experience. We weren't disappointed. The food seemed to have been prepared with special care and all the signs of a talented chef. And the presentation was perfect. The portions might have been a tad more generous but with food prices rising, I'm sure management has made responsible choices. Although the rolls served before the meal were scrumptious, we would have liked them somewhat heated. And our wait person, though competent and responsive to our requests, might have also been a tad warmer and friendlier. We give our dining experience five stars and highly recommend your restaurant.
My 3 friends and I all had different entrees and every one was a winner (salmon, mani mahi, flatiron steak, pasta bolognese). Sometimes, even with a varied menu, it's difficult to find a lot of items to order. Not at Flora - we all agreed that we could've ordered any of the appetizers and entrees and been very happy. And we were! The hostess was welcoming and our server friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. From start to finish, a great experience. We shall return!
The food and drink were excellent. We had a good, personable server but he was a bit slow. We did wait awhile for coffee after the meal and after the dessert. Fortunately, we weren't in any hurry. The atmosphere was great. The bar is well-designed and beautiful. The cost of the meal is certainly high, like downtown Boston prices. Overall, a good experience.
We have eaten often at Flora, and enjoyed it very much -- till recently.
This week was the 3rd time in a row leaving us thoroughly disappointed. The attention to detail, to unique tastes and attractive presentation are nowhere to be found. The 3-course tasting menu was not worth the price of admission. I wish I could offer a more upbeat review, but that would not be honest.
I hope the restaurant can step back and re-evaluate how to recover its former excellence -- we would like to have reason to re-visit.
We discovered a great wine that we hope to purchase somewhere! The duck confit appetizer special was wonderful. My husband's mahi mahi fish was served perfectly and he enjoyed it. My slow cooked leg of lamb was not very good. The lamb was tough and tasteless, the polenta was also tasteless, the sauce was very watery and the greens were too spicy. I was offered something else when the waitress ( who was very nice) checked in, but by that time, and after enjoying the duck appetizer, I didn't need anything else. The chocolate cloud dessert was delicious!
Lovely atmosphere, very attentive service. Decent food, slightly better than what I can make at home. Menu is quite limited with few choices. Desserts definitely not worth the $9 especially the small ramekin that was supposed to be an apple crisp, which had little content and even less flavor. Cappuccino machine broken again!
We've been going to Flora since it opened, and it is usually very good, which is why we choose it for special occasions. The other night, however, the service was inattentive and slow. Two different red wines got mixed up, items didn't come out at the right time, we had to ask for bread. Very disappointing, particularly as we got there at 5:30, when the place wasn't full. Even the little touches--it was a birthday celebration, which I mentioned in the reservation, but no sparkly stuff on the table!--were missing. Food just so-so. Started out the evening by being told the table we had requested didn't work out....I guess you'd call it an off night all around.
The Parisian gnocchi with mustard greens and butternut squash appetizer was amazing! My leg of lamb was tender and the creamy polenta made a nice change from mashed potatoes. And while I usually go for chocolate, the light and luscious lemon-raspberry dessert was perfect after a heavy meat dinner. Also, three cheers for the quiet ambience. My husband and I enjoyed actually being able to hear each other without shouting, as we enjoyed a great meal and pleasant, attentive, but not overbearing service.
We have been coming to Flora for years, about time posting a review. Experience here has never been less than very good, recent meal was EXCELLENT, the kitchen was hitting on all cylinders! Had mussels, calamari, leg of lamb, and roast chicken. The roast chicken stole the show, surprisingly.
We didn't think anything stood out in this restaurant. After reading the wonderful reviews, we were expecting so much more than what we experienced. The food was just okay. I had the trout entree and I thought it was strange it was covered in shredded red cabbage. I don't know why the kitchen would think red cabbage goes on top of a grilled trout, but whatever....
Always a stupendous experience at Flora. I have been coming here for years. Bob the owner is an exceptional cook and a wonderful person as well as Mary Jo his wife. I took my nephew for his 29 th birthday & he said it was one of the best meals he's had. He loved the restaurant as do I. I'm coming back with my friends soon for a 60 th birthday celebration.
Flora in Arlington is a very nice restaurant. The food was very good. Our server was excellent. My friend had the fish special which she enjoyed. I had the steak--very nice. The only disappointment was the blueberry peach cobbler . I think it was the last of the evening! The atmosphere was good for catching up with my friend. All on All a pleasant evening and I'd go back again.
We've eaten many times at Flora and this is the first time the food has disappointed. Flavors weren't as distinct, unique as we've become used to, the presentation was a bit lacking, and the fact that several dishes were sold out was another minus. Service, however, as always, was top notch, including the complimentary side dish to 'rescue' a somewhat failed main course.
In spite of the above, we will certainly return to Flora ... Everyone is entitled to the occasional miss-hit!
Our party of four settled in for a nice dining experience. We ordered two apps. A calamari dish which was o.k. But not described as spicy, yet it was. The other some sort of a warm cheese dish which came with TWO pieces of bread. I, as well as the other male in our party ordered flat iron steak, mine medium rare his medium, mine was a little to rare is was rarer than mine, he sent his back. Our spouses ordered a lamb dish which was o.k. The other a scallop over pasta dish which was served to them five minutes after our steaks. The party with the scallop pasta dish had to return it because it was cold. The steak finally came back as we waited for the redone scallop pasta dish. Again , that dish was spicy but not described as such, she ate the scallops. Our two desserts were a espresso creme brouile and a deep chocolate cake, creme brouile, cold chocolate cake, ordinary.
Flora is a beautifully decorated Restaurant with a Seasonal Menu that is not very big, but contains a great variety with a lot of attention to detail with layering of seasonal favors. We had a very knowledgeable server named Chrissy. She was extremely attentive - honestly the best service we have had in a long time. The seasonal drinks were also fabulous. My compliments to the chefs and bartender. Chrissy also made the birthday celebration of my husband very memorable. Especially loved the birthday sprinkles on the table.
The food was very good; the 1/2 chicken dish was moist and flavorful and my wife thoroughly enjoyed her pasta with sea scallops. Desserts were also strong and the baked goat cheese was a good starter, albeit a little light on the crustini. (Particularly with the amount of cheese provided)
The room was also a plus (we were seated in the area near the bar) tastefully decorated and appealing. However is was too warm and stuffy for comfort on our visit. Either a dose of fresh air or a lower setting on the HVAC was required.
Also, our server was pleasant and helpful but we didn't see enough of her. It was understaffed fora Friday night.
Upon arriving, restaurant was not that busy and the ambiance was nice and quiet. As the evening progressed, the tables filled up, the noise level went up, and the service went way down. The wait staff were clearly stretched very thinly and we had to wait at least 25 minutes for our dessert. The check was starting to take a long time but then the hostess realized that we, along with several other tables, were just waiting for our checks and she brought them to us. There were folks waiting for tables at the door.
The food was awesome however, and I recommend the pomerita (spelling?).
First time at Flora. Heard good things over the years. Had a reservation but was made to wait nearly 15 minutes- was told the waiter wouldn't be ready yet. Limited menu- not much variety of choices. Food was OK- but not noteworthy. For a restaurant with a pricey menu, I expected more.
I've been to Flora several times over the past few years, and it's about the only Boston-area restaurant about which I can say that they've *always* gotten it right. The food is consistently excellent and interesting, and the service is impeccable -- personal without being intrusive. I always leave with a smile on my face and good tastes still on my tongue. And I selfishly love that it remains relatively undiscovered, so I can usually find a table!
This most recent visit, my dad had a Proustian moment with the leg of lamb, which took him back to his mother's special occasion dinners, and I had a simple, perfect steak that was tender as butter. The appetizer apple and fennel salad was a standout as well.
We made a reservation on Open Table for 8 because there was nothing avalable earlier. We risked it and showed up almost an hour early and they sat us! Fabulous waiter, whose name I can't remember, but he said he was Rumanian (in case the owners read this and want to know who waited on us). The heirloo tomato salad felt like an afterthought but the salmon entirely made up for it. It was RIDICULOUS. Top 5 things i've ever eaten, for sure. The Mahi Mahi special was delicious too, but it's hard to top that salmon.
