Flora - Oakland Ratings and Reviews
The best Crab Cake Eggs Benedict at Sunday brunch! Great cocktails. Highly recommend their "Carter Beats the Devil" cocktail. Cool interior, like a bistro from 30s, but modern at the same time. Friendly wait staff. Perfect location for upscale dining before a show at Fox Theatre.
We had a quick dinner before going to the Paramount. I had somehow made the reservation for the wrong night and the hostess was terrific and fit us in. Two of us had the fish stew - OK but not great, one had the steak which was met with raves, and I had Butternut squash soup and fresh crab - both were excellent. We will definitely be back.
We came for Sunday brunch and all 4 of us ordered something different. Each dish was outstanding as we had shared tasting bites. The grilled shrimp and grits were creamy and flavorful, savory and comforting. I was coveting my friend's benedict dish - she gave me a bite of the salt cod brandade and I wanted more...They give you more than enough food which didn't leave us room for dessert. Can't wait to come back.
Food was pretty good- service wasn’t very good unfortunately. They forgot to open the wine we brought twice. Mixed up our order and brought out something we didn’t order. Then they boxed up our left overs but never brought them out to us. Don’t think I will be going back anytime soon.
We ordered the scallops and the pork shoulder. The scallops were visibly overcooked and small. The pork was 60% fat with very little meat. It's unclear why the chef would even use those pieces, but she/he did. We didn't say anything. The pudding is simply amazing. The drinks and service is good. However, this was a disappointing meal and will make me reconsider going back.
Really nice little restaurant. We had good food and service. The burrata appetizer was fantastic and my husband had the shortribs which he loved. Overall, very nice and we'd go back. It has a romantic feel, but I thought it was just a little too dark and the tables are very close together, so if you have a loud talker or want to have a private conversation it's not perfect.
Great evening with my sister for our birthdays. Early dinner before a show it was perfect. House made burrata was yummy and we split the short ribs with a soup and salad before. Then caramel pudding for dessert. All very good. Parking was easy with the lot down a block. The owner was there and was very friendly and attentive.
We came here before going to a concert across the street. I definitely recommend to come early as this place gets busy. The food was really good, fresh, seasonal. The ambiance was also good, but the restaurant gets loud as it fills up. The service was also really good, and friendly. We will definitely come here again when we come up for another concert.
Flora has been one of our go-to places in the East Bay for cocktails and a burger at the bar for a number of years. Our experiences with full meals had been more mixed, but this time we thought everything was excellent. One of us did have the burger, which was terrific as usual, but we also had pasta (rigatoni with pork ragu) and several small plates, oysters, and a side of beets with the horseradish sauce. Everyone was well pleased, and the cocktails were excellent, of course. We'll be checking out the dinner menu more often now.
Our family of four was there for Sunday brunch. Two of us got the french toast, honestly kind of underwhelming - was it perhaps the chef's day off? Then the other two waited probably 20 minutes for our meals - a waffle, and a ham and egg sandwich, with only a thanks for your patience - response.
Went for brunch. Food was just meh. Great biscuits and cornbread. The eggs Benedict was just ok. The sauce was barely warm, and the meat they used was mostly fat. Shrimp and grits good. Eggs scramble average. Frittata quite good. Nice to get a pot of coffee for the table. Waiter great. What bothered me the most, however, was the bathroom. We were there first thing after they opened, and I used the bathroom shortly thereafter. I know a lot of folks aren't careful with their paper towels and many don't do a courtesy wipe of the sink, but the room wasn't very clean to me. I have a big issue with bathrooms and I know this isn't a Michelin Star place, but can't someone check the bathrooms out occasionally? Also, I don't understand why the doors, walls and floors can't be cleaned properly. A mere wipe down of floors each evening isn't enough. All I could think of was how I wanted to paint the walls and doors for the bathrooms, and do a deep cleaning of the tiles and grout. Kind of like when you see a really dirty car. Maybe it is just me, but can't places do some decent deep cleaning occasionally?
Service is deplorable. We arrived at 6:15 but didn’t get our main course until 7:30 at which time we had to bolt it down to make an 8 o’clock performance. We only got our mains because I complained several times. The waitress said But you didn’t order until 6:45. Excuse me, but she didn’t take our order until then. It was a very busy night but they knew in advance and didn’t seem to be prepared. We won’t return
I found Flora to be a mixed experience. Cozy and intimate it was not, but it was lively, crowded and very noisy. Service was slow as over 15 minutes passed from the time we were seated until we were served our cocktails. The drinks were small, but unique and very good. The menu seemed a bit limited, but offered a good selection, and our meals (including rabbit and beef) were excellent. Flora emphasizes it's Art Deco interior design, but I found the atmosphere to be stark and dark (especially when the tiny candle on our table burned out). All-in-all, it was a good evening; we were glad we went, and we may try it again in a few months.
Delicious! Nice wines, great service, amazing food. There were only 2 of us and we ending up sharing a few dishes including a roasted squash appetizer and the halibut. Both dishes were phenomenal and nice size servings. We were really happy with our picks and even though we shared most of the meal, it was perfect. I will definitely be back!
