Flora - Oakland Ratings and Reviews
The exterior of this bldg is simply stunning, and since our out-of-town daughter is a big Deco fan, that was a factor in choosing Flora. I'd been there before and forgot how ... "energetic" the noise level is. The mushroom soup was a highlight for me - wonderfully flavorful and super-filling. Daughter's oysters got high marks, as did her couscous entree, a lemon dessert and a side order of beets. My husband found his steak a little disappointing. We had a charming and extremely attentive busser, but I wish we'd seen a little more of our server.
I had the steak and it was overly saucy, a little disappointing for the price point. Lacked elegance and the proportions were off - the greens served with it should have been doubled and the sauce halved. Otherwise, a lovely dinner and the burrata we had as a starter was delicious (could have used more bread and greens but the cheese was perfect).
Service was perfect and the ambiance was as expected (I’ve been here multiple times) very lovely.
This was a great find for us. The atmosphere is lively and old school. The cocktails are well balanced and very easy to drink. Each thing we ordered was filled with layers of complex flavors. Lastly, the service was outstanding. It's our new neighborhood gem.
Attractive room. Darkish with warm lighting and enjoyable presence of the city through the windows. Delightful server. Enjoyed the Transmogrifier cocktail - like a subtler and more interesting sidecar. Had the buttermilk fried chicken with brightly spicy coating and attractive and interesting vegetables. Spouse had a to-die-for NY steak. Pricey but tasty CA red. Will definitely come back
We went for brunch on a Saturday. The beignets and house-made granola with vanilla yogurt were delicious. My partner got a burger with fries, and I can attest that the fries were tasty - crispy and salty just The way I like it. The service was great. The waitress checked on us just enough, and she did not rush us out the door when we lingered to converse. With all the many conversations going on it does get a little loud, so occasionally it felt like I had to shout a bit to be heard, but not so bad that I was terribly annoyed about it. All in all an excellent dining experience.
This was our first time at Flora. We really enjoyed the food, the ambiance and the excellent service. There was only one complaint. The menu does not offer a large number of options. We were dining at about 8PM on a Saturday night. However, they were already out of the crab cakes from the modest list of appetizers and the chicken from the main course. If the menu were larger (i.e. more items) this would be less of a problem, but the lack of those two items was an issue for our party since it left relatively few choices. This may have been a one time problem, and we really did enjoy the restaurant, but I would hope that we would not experience this problem on future visits. And yes, in spite of this, we would definitely go back.
Exceptional value for Oakland Restaurant Week dinner. For appetizers, I really enjoyed the persimmons in the brussel sprout appetizer & my husband's crab cakes were perfect. I liked my swordfish entree, but was jealous of my husband's 10 oz NY Strip Steak as it was a perfectly executed medium steak. Our prix fixe meals ended with our choice of desserts. Again, I was jealous of my husband's choice. Though my molten chocolate cake was tasty, the smooth caramel mixed with the salt & crunch of the pepitas was the perfect end to a wonderful date night.
I have been wanting to try the restaurant and took advantage of the fixed menu for restaurant week in Oakland. The choices on the fixed menu were wonderful and allowed us to truly see the variety of dishes that Flora offers. The cocktails were also terrific. We were not disappointed and would return for another visit.
This was our first time at Flora and even though it was packed for New Year's Eve, everything was pretty flawless. The vibe is cool but unpretentious and the service really spot on. We had the ny strip and the crab/fish stew, which both showed a lot of skill and touch in how they were prepped and plated. Really looking forward to going back to Flora!
Great location, right across from the Fox Theater. Amazing food coupled with stellar service housed in a eclectic art deco building. The restaurant is medium size which means you don't get overlooked and they have a fantastic bar where you can eat/drink at too. Anything on the menu I'm sure is fantastic but I highly recommend the burger. Yes I said burger lol. Trust me this is not your average burger. Will be back again and again.
Very disappointing. We’ve eaten there once before and had enjoyed it. Last night the fish stew tasted fishy, the scallops were undercooked, oysters tiny, salad just meh. The service was fine and we like the atmosphere. But for the money (not cheap) and disappointing food I won’t return.
From the start, our experience was not good. Despite arriving early for our reservation at a nearly empty dining room, we were given the proverbial worst table in the house: high traffic area next to wait station and bathroom. No service until remainder of party arrived. Server was more attentive after that. Appetizers were excellent: great oysters with mignonette sauce and roast Brussel sprouts. Entrees were sadly of poor quality, especially considering the cost. The seafood stew was served lukewarm at best. The broth was rather bland and lacking in any seafood flavor. Two of the clams did not open up and when I pointed this out to the server she said she would "let them know" and that was the last that I heard about that. The remaining three entrees (each being hamburgers, fries and salad) were served several minutes later. The burgers were okay but not exceptional. The salads were overdressed and the fries were all stubby, about 2-3 inches in length (though actually rather tasty). I thought stubby fries were their thing but saw that the table next to us received beautiful full sized fries. Seems we got the remnant fries.
At the end of the meal things really went bad. There was a oil lamp on the table with an exposed falme that extended about an inch above the sides of the lamp. The hair of one of my dining companions caught fire on the open flame. Fortunately, she was not seriously injured but was definitely in shock. No restaurant employee came to see if she was okay or needed any help. On our way out, the manager expressed her unhapiness with the burn victim for leaving her burnt hair in the sink requiring her to have someone clean it up. She never showed any worry or sympathy for the victim and seemed perplexed that anyone would be upset with her. The restaurant will be fortunate if they are not the subject of a lawsuit.
I was shocked by the attitude of the manager and surprised by the poor quality of food. I only have heard good things in the past.
Half of our group of 6 was happy with their entrees, the other half was not. The pork shank was pretty flavorless and really could have used some salt to finish it off. Given the price point I expected better on the pork and also more than the 1/2 cup or so of polenta and a few roasted vegetables. The shepherds pie too could have used some salt and a few more herbs in the mix. The steak was cooked well beyond the medium rare that was asked for. It also wouldn't hurt if they put a few bottles of wine on the list that were priced in the $38-$45 dollar range. It was a pricey meal for food that I feel I could have done better with at home.
Five of us dined here for a birthday brunch, and we were very happy with the options available and the taste of everything. The only thing that didn't go totally well was the speed of which we were served after all of our party had arrived (they were delayed about 10 minutes), and the wait for our food. All in all, the wait was definitely worth it and we enjoyed the heck out of the french toast and the shrimp grits.
The best Crab Cake Eggs Benedict at Sunday brunch! Great cocktails. Highly recommend their "Carter Beats the Devil" cocktail. Cool interior, like a bistro from 30s, but modern at the same time. Friendly wait staff. Perfect location for upscale dining before a show at Fox Theatre.
We had a quick dinner before going to the Paramount. I had somehow made the reservation for the wrong night and the hostess was terrific and fit us in. Two of us had the fish stew - OK but not great, one had the steak which was met with raves, and I had Butternut squash soup and fresh crab - both were excellent. We will definitely be back.
We came for Sunday brunch and all 4 of us ordered something different. Each dish was outstanding as we had shared tasting bites. The grilled shrimp and grits were creamy and flavorful, savory and comforting. I was coveting my friend's benedict dish - she gave me a bite of the salt cod brandade and I wanted more...They give you more than enough food which didn't leave us room for dessert. Can't wait to come back.
Food was pretty good- service wasn’t very good unfortunately. They forgot to open the wine we brought twice. Mixed up our order and brought out something we didn’t order. Then they boxed up our left overs but never brought them out to us. Don’t think I will be going back anytime soon.
We ordered the scallops and the pork shoulder. The scallops were visibly overcooked and small. The pork was 60% fat with very little meat. It's unclear why the chef would even use those pieces, but she/he did. We didn't say anything. The pudding is simply amazing. The drinks and service is good. However, this was a disappointing meal and will make me reconsider going back.
