Flex Mussels - 82nd Street Ratings and Reviews
If you like mussels, you can't go wrong here. They prepare mussels many different ways and it's fun to share so you can sample some of the varieties. If anyone in your party does not eat mussels, or fish for that matter, they have a delicious chicken entree. Service is always spot on and the tab is reasonable for NYC. The homemade donuts are a must - several different fillings to choose from accompanied by a delicious dipping sauce. Flex is one of my favorite restaurants.
Flex Mussels was a great place for date night. The atmosphere is lively and loud so it forced me and my husband to really focus on our own conversation-- great listening exercise! The food was the star. We ordered oysters for our app, and they were fresh and briny and $1 each (during our Happy Hour visit). We also enjoyed two other apps: the flex fries and a fried platter that included oysters, shrimp, and calamari-- so good. The mussels, however, were our least favorite. We got the Dijon mussels and they were just ok--perhaps we should have tried a different preparation and the mussels were small. We didn't hate it, but we certainly enjoyed our apps much more.
Sat us next to the kitchen with my chair in the doorway to the kitchen
There isn't a door closing the kitchen off ~
so I listened to smashing dishes and off the chart noise for the entire dinner.
The manager couldn't care less. Said everyone has reservations (as did we) and walked away.
Waitress was sweet and excellent
I have looked forward to a meal at Flex for a long time. Sadly, my husband doesn't like mussels, so I thought brunch was our best option. That said, I can't speak to their dinner service.
Brunch cost us $91 for one drink each, one shared app, and one entree each. Incredibly expensive considering. First, my $10 Bellini didn't even fill half the glass. For that price, I should have opted for the hour long, $25 bottomless. For almost half that price, I got almost half a drink. The avo toast was good, so I was at least optimistic for the entrees.
My husband ordered the huevos rancheros, which just tasted so smokey, he barely ate it. I tried it and spit out the sausage. It was like chewing on propane. I ordered the classic mussels, which I looked forward to, but was disappointed in. The broth was very watery and had little flavor. It lacked salt or any seasoning that would make a pot of mussels enjoyable enough to sop up with bread. My only guess was that because they serve so many mussels regularly, quality control is not existent. Sorry to sound harsh, but I was literally dipping bread in what tasted like water.
So, for $91, I was completely jarred. For that price, I will unfortunately not be going back.
This is the second time I have been here.
Main draw are the mussels with the creative sauces.
The wines are good but they pour a very small amount for $15 per glass.
Nice service but the mussels are not juicy or big, I have had better quality mussels elsewhere,
but not such good sauces.
We were going to the 92nd Street Y and this was a OK choice for where we were going.
Amazing brunch! After hearing great things, finally decided to try this place and will be back. Had the baked eggs and asked them to do it with egg whites, they accommodated. Enormous portions, really tasty food. Get the truffle fries!! Only weird thing was they brought 2 orders of fries when we ordered one, and we tried to tell the person who brought them but he didn't understand, and came back and took the fries away....after a few minutes and we had eaten them...hope they didn't go to another table!! Mussels were great too!
I arrived for an early dinner (6:15 for a 6:30 reservation). The bar area was packed, mostly with people eating. It is a small bar area with so little room to walk through that i knocked someone's coat off their chair.
Note, there is no coat check and this place is too small for that.
The main dining room was 3/4 empty, as would be expected at that time.
Two of three of us were there, third was coming and, yup, we had to wait until the third showed up in the overcrowded bar. Are you kidding me?
The meal was very good. Two had mussels, one had lobster roll. Wine was reasonably priced. Our server was fabulous and I left a 28% tip because of that.
I probably won't go back, however, because of the nonsense at the door. Why on earth would they need to keep me standing, actually shuffled around in the bar to let people pass by. As it happens, our third showed up on time. Too bad so much effort went into managing this place to have great service in the dining area and it was wasted because of the lazy, customer-unfriendly policy of making you wait in the ridiculous bar for the rest of your party.
I'm so sorry this will never be a go-to restaurant. It could have been, but I wouldn't want to subject a guest to this.
Solid and consistently good. If you don't like mussels, however, your choices are a bit limited. If you do or want to try, this is your place. Lots of creative options, all delicious. Service and wait staff is professional and efficient. It is a bit cramped, though, so don't expect much quiet conversation. You'll be eating anyway, so that shouldn't matter.
I've been here multiple times. And I'm not the kind of person that goes back to the same restaurant, especially in NYC, where there are so many great spots to explore. This is one of my favs! I love the energy. My favorite is sitting at the bar. Great happy hour.
Always guaranteed a solid experience here. I'm not sure, but I feel like when they recently changed up the menu, we lost some recipes but didn't gain any in the transition. Maybe I'm wrong, but I honestly can't recall. I'm 100% sure prices jump $2-3 a plate though... At any rate, still a quality neighborhood joint.
