Flex Mussels - 82nd Street Ratings and Reviews
Great selection of mussel flavors. My Fra Diablo lobster mussels were delicious. Shared delicious appetizer - crabmeat guacamole. The only issue was that entrees were delivered too soon, more time was needed to enjoy the appetizer. Gracious service. Server made great wine recommendation. The place smells just great! Tables are close together, but it was fun chatting with fellow diners.
Casual Cool hip atmosphere. Food is delicious. Crab guacamole w fresh warm chips was a perfect appetizer for 4 of us. We all had mussels in different broth. All 4 fabulous. Dessert was. out of this world a selection of 6 different fillings inside warm, “just made” donuts.
This place reached a plateau early, and fortunately for all of us it hasn't retreated much. My only comment would be that I used to get more mussels; they are still phenomenal, but just not as many as earlier in my experience here. Great everything. Get mussels (Uh, yeah?) and do not leave without donuts. Great cocktails, good wines, nearly perfect oysters and mussels.
I've been to Flex Mussels several times and never disappointed. This visit was a particular highlight for two reasons. The first was "The Number 23" mussels done for New Year's Eve. It was a decadent champagne and truffle broth and so delicious that my fiancée and kept the bowl long after we finished the mussels just to eat the broth itself like a soup. The second was Rebecca, our server, who was awesome.
Food is great, atmosphere energetic, indeed, but can get overpowered by noise of tipsy ppl starting to scream over each other and the music. As long as you don’t mind LOUD! then you’ll like it. It’s a fun spot to get together with friends and restaurant manager Inga was gracious and professional while running Friday night’s busy operation, plus she was playing DJ with an incredible fun oldies from Disco golden hits from Europe: we were dancing in our seats! Lol
Service was phenomenal. Made me a cocktail that wasn’t on the menu with no issue. Had fried oysters for an app which were great but on the pricey side for amount you get. I had the Fungi Mussels which were so savory, really delicious. Wanted to try the donuts but too full!
If you like mussels, you can't go wrong here. They prepare mussels many different ways and it's fun to share so you can sample some of the varieties. If anyone in your party does not eat mussels, or fish for that matter, they have a delicious chicken entree. Service is always spot on and the tab is reasonable for NYC. The homemade donuts are a must - several different fillings to choose from accompanied by a delicious dipping sauce. Flex is one of my favorite restaurants.
Flex Mussels was a great place for date night. The atmosphere is lively and loud so it forced me and my husband to really focus on our own conversation-- great listening exercise! The food was the star. We ordered oysters for our app, and they were fresh and briny and $1 each (during our Happy Hour visit). We also enjoyed two other apps: the flex fries and a fried platter that included oysters, shrimp, and calamari-- so good. The mussels, however, were our least favorite. We got the Dijon mussels and they were just ok--perhaps we should have tried a different preparation and the mussels were small. We didn't hate it, but we certainly enjoyed our apps much more.
Sat us next to the kitchen with my chair in the doorway to the kitchen
There isn't a door closing the kitchen off ~
so I listened to smashing dishes and off the chart noise for the entire dinner.
The manager couldn't care less. Said everyone has reservations (as did we) and walked away.
Waitress was sweet and excellent
I have looked forward to a meal at Flex for a long time. Sadly, my husband doesn't like mussels, so I thought brunch was our best option. That said, I can't speak to their dinner service.
Brunch cost us $91 for one drink each, one shared app, and one entree each. Incredibly expensive considering. First, my $10 Bellini didn't even fill half the glass. For that price, I should have opted for the hour long, $25 bottomless. For almost half that price, I got almost half a drink. The avo toast was good, so I was at least optimistic for the entrees.
My husband ordered the huevos rancheros, which just tasted so smokey, he barely ate it. I tried it and spit out the sausage. It was like chewing on propane. I ordered the classic mussels, which I looked forward to, but was disappointed in. The broth was very watery and had little flavor. It lacked salt or any seasoning that would make a pot of mussels enjoyable enough to sop up with bread. My only guess was that because they serve so many mussels regularly, quality control is not existent. Sorry to sound harsh, but I was literally dipping bread in what tasted like water.
So, for $91, I was completely jarred. For that price, I will unfortunately not be going back.
This is the second time I have been here.
Main draw are the mussels with the creative sauces.
The wines are good but they pour a very small amount for $15 per glass.
Nice service but the mussels are not juicy or big, I have had better quality mussels elsewhere,
but not such good sauces.
We were going to the 92nd Street Y and this was a OK choice for where we were going.
