Flex Mussels - 13th Street Ratings and Reviews
Always one of our favorite spots. Went for a birthday dinner and did not disappoint. Have been a few times before and always turned down dessert because we were full after the mussels, but gave the donuts a chance this time and they were excellent as well. Will definitely be back again soon. Little pricey for what it is but worth it (not sure if others feel this way considering its NYC but still).
I usually dine at Flex for dinner and my past visits have always been pleasant. However, my first time having brunch there, the overall experience was quite disappointing. The food was delicious, however, booking a 2:30pm reservation posed a problem since that is when the kitchen supposedly closes. My party of 4, less 1, arrived 10 min before and upon seating was told that kitchen was closing at 2:30, that we had 8 min. Around 2:40, we were approached by management and since we were still less our 1 person, we were basically told that people usually are on time for their reservation and the person we were waiting for will not be able to order and we had to order immediately since the kitchen was waiting on us to close to prep for dinner. I still am having a hard time understanding exactly how it was allowed to make a reservation time exactly when a kitchen closes. I do not even want to think about what would have happened if we showed up exactly at 2:30, not even taking into consideration a 15 min grace period. Anyway, I do enjoy the food at this establishment and would recommend it. However, please note if a 2:30 reservation time is available for brunch, do not book it unless you plan on coming at 2, enjoy being rushed to order from the moment you are seated, or are okay with not being served food at all.
Been wanting to try this place forever and I finally made it for brunch! Went around 11:30am on a Saturday and it was surprisingly empty. The food was absolutely amazing though!! Everything bagel doughnuts were all that I hoped they would be and all of us loved our meals. I got the baked eggs and it was incredible. The sauce was fantastic and I can be very picky about marinara sauce. Would 100% recommend, I personally can't wait to go back!
Had a great time here with my wife and our old friend mereting up in NTC. The place was friendly and fun.Food was altogether delicious , creatively prepared and service was great. Will ddfiniely go again for dinner and try their brunch on future NYC visits.
Stellar mussels in a cozy and fun setting.
What we ate:
Burnt Fingers - Good, solid fried starter. The oyster was the star, the rest was good.
Oysters (6 from Weskeag, ME) - Nice, briny, and plump.
Parma - Mussels were perfect, broth was outstanding. Really well thought out and the hit of lemon cut through everything perfectly.
Fungi - Only eclipsed by the Parma. The porcini cream sauce went beautifully with the bacon and mushrooms as well as getting along great with mussels themselves. The rosemary was a noticeable touch as well.
Fries - Only ate a few to be honest, they were good but the bread was the best option for post-mussel dunking.
Donuts (Fluffernutter, S'mores, Blueberry, Cinnamon Sugar (plain) - The heavier two were decadent and delicious but the blueberry and plain stood above them. The plain reminded me of a beignet with a slightly softer exterior.
Service was professional, efficient, and personable.
We will definitely be back to try the rest of the mussels but will most likely skip the appetizers as the mussel portion is more than enough for a full meal.
We had a nice time dining at Flex, it was our first time. We did both the Dijon and a tomato-based sauce and shared between the 2 of us - both were delish though the Dijon is HEAVY on mustard (think sinus-clearing wasabi heavy) but I like that flavor/sensation. They provide you with ample bread for dipping in the generous portion of sauce left over. We started with peel & eat shrimp which were deliciously flavored but a nuisance (though aren't they always?). Thought the bowls of mussels in the mid- to upper-$20 range seemed more expensive than most all mussels I've seen elsewhere.
What happened to one of my favorite neighborhood places to eat?!? When a restaurant accepts an 8PM reservation they should not act if you are inconveniencing them when you arrive at 8PM; nor should dismiss you with we are running about 15 minutes behind and you can wait at the bar. In addition, if you are still waiting to be sat at 8:20PM the hostesses should at least pretend that they are sorry and again not act if you are bothering them that you would like to know when you will be able to sit for your 8PM reservation. That being said, the food is still delicious with the best fried oysters and mussels around, however, it will be a very long time (if at all) before I l return for another meal and be subjected to this behavior again.
