Flex Mussels - 13th Street Ratings and Reviews
Flex never varies. Solid food and good service. Noise level is perfect if you don't want to talk to anyone at your table. That's ok for the bar area, but in the back it would be nice if they toned it down a bit . Mussels and fries are great and the salads never miss. Try the fried oysters, too. Finish it off with the donuts and be on your way. They will give you the bill quickly, as they like to turn the tables over.
Excellent find if u love seafood . Of course, especially mussels( which we were told r flown in daily from Prince Edward Island . The oysters are superb as well . I highly recommend the mussels Parma - amazing, but the sauce is very rich . Also had the mussels w/ bacon, mushrooms and rosemary , very distinctive savory flavors ! Service was superb , knowledgeable , efficient , and friendly- nothing negative to say
Went with 2 friends for mussels. I had the "Classic" mussels, which were very bland. My companions had much more flavorful selections, so if I go back, I'll know what to do. We shared the lemon meringue "pie", which is actually a parfait, which was spectacular.
The decor is cold, the service perfunctory, and the prices a bit high considering the small portions. That all said, it's worth a second trip (my friends have been many times).
The fungi mussels are AMAZING. I had never had a cream base before with mussels and figured I would try it and now, all I have to say is WOW.
The oysters were great also, I recommend the kunumoto as they are meatier and have an almost creamy-like texture to them.
And you can't forget about the delicious donuts that Flex is famous for! You can't go and not get them...
Service was slow. Restaurant practically empty at 11:15 for brunch. Waited over 10 mins before waitress came over, and that was upon request. Received uncooked pancakes. Requested they be redone and then waited 15 mins for new Pancakes and they too were undercooked. They removed it from the bill. Stick with mussels and skip brunch.
This is quite possibly the best meal I have ever had. Everything was delicious, and our waiter was outstanding. We came here for our anniversary, and it was perfect. We ordered an appetizer and a few glasses of wine (the sparking rose was the best I've ever had), and then shared two kinds of mussels and truffle fries. I am still dreaming about the truffle fries. And the mussels!
I would recommend coming here for happy hour, as we did not. It looks like they have a great happy hour, and we ended up spending about $200 for a meal for two. Not your run of the mill weekend date for us. We also sat outside on their little patio, which was nice, but once the sun went down, it was very dark and difficult to see, even by the tiny candlelight. Again, it would be perfect for an early dinner or happy hour.
Excellent food with a wide range of mussel preparations. Resultant broths were even better, happily sopped up with the good bread provided. four of us ordered 4 separate buckets, Bangkok, bisque, Parma, and Mediterranean. There were no mussels left and no broth either. Only negative was the noise level, especially the music, so loud that we could not hear each other and the waitress could not hear our orders. After 2 requests, it was turned down, to everyone's relief and enjoyment.
I had been a huge fan of Flex Mussels, but it's been a while since we went and this last dinner was very disappointing. The food was completely lackluster and the service was distracted. We ordered two orders of the truffle fries, and while one was fine the other tasted like regular fries. (Very unfortunate for $12 fries.) The four different styles of mussels were uniformly bland and insipid. There was nothing that inspires another visit.
I used to really love flex mussels but had a bad experience on my last visit. If you have any food allergies I would suggest ordering directly with the manager. The waiter made a huge mistake after I alerted him about my allergy multiple times. The manager was very accommodating and nice but the mistake had already been made.
There was a multitude of different mussel options to choose from- and the amitriciano mussels we got were delicious ! The ambiance was welcoming, too. There was a large lit up panel showing a beach scene and it made us feel like we were dining on the beach rather than in the middle of Manhattan!
The food was great but service lackluster. It could've just been the night but we waited over ten minutes after being seated for a server to come, after being flagged down. The server came again to check on how our meal was only just before we were finished- missing any opportunity to correct anything that was wrong or needed.
The mussels were amazing. Subtle flavors that worked incredibly well together.
I'd try the location on the upper east side before returning to this location.
Host, bar tender and the first 2 servers we good but the last server who was clearly on for last cut was a jerk. We spent a fair amount of money and he was rushing us out before we finished dessert which was the worst part of the meal. The donuts are not as good as I remembered and the gelato/ sorbet was horrible. This used to be be one of my stable dinner spots... I don't know what happened to the food.
With27 different choices on the preparation of mussels what not to like. Appetizers of fry oyster were breaded but not overly done. Enjoyed the selection of beers. The restaurant was inviting with enjoyable music. You can have a conversation without having to raise your voice.
