Fleming's Steakhouse - Dayton Ratings and Reviews
We were there to celebrate a birthday as well as a family pregnancy announcement. We love Flemings and have always had positive experiences. The only thing that has ever bothered me about Flemings is their table assignment of parties. We’ve gone there multiple times as just the two of us and they put us in those massive half circle booths. This time we were there with four people and we were jammed into a small booth that lines the bar where there’s no elbow room to lift your knife in order to cut your steak. It makes no sense. If you have a part of 3 or more going to Flemings, I’d suggest to specifically request a table or one of the half round booths so you’re not shoved into one of the smaller booths. Maybe it’s just me but I hate being in a booth where I have to keep my arms down or in my lap just to be comfortable, ultimately forced to check my coat because it would not have fit in the booth with me, and my purse on the floor because even my purse couldn’t fit in the booth with two people on one side.
My wife and I took our college-age son (graduating Univ Dayton this year. yea!) to Flemings for his birthday. My son and I each ordered the bone-in filet mignon. Mine was cooked medium well and my son's was medium rare. Both were cooked perfectly to our liking with a peppery crustiness outside and mouthwatering inside. With the bone in, even the medium-well was moist and full-flavored.
We made our reservation via Open Table and noted that it was for a birthday and the receptionist asked us about it when we arrived but the waitress didn't seem to know about our special occasion until she noticed the birthday card on the table near the end of the meal. The meal was big and we each had a salad or soup starter (plus a birthday cake back at our son's apartment), so we passed on dessert.
But our friendly, attentive and pleasant waitress brought a little gift (or two) to the table that made a perfect ending to our little family birthday gathering.
We eat out twice a week, rarely at the same restaurant more than twice/year. Our normal dinner is a bottle of wine, appetizer and dinner for two for $100. Flemings is way over priced! I believe without any discount, this meal would easily have been $200. The food was good, but the value is restricted to those that have an unlimited expense account!
Flemings is a good solid steakhouse, offering everything you'd come to expect from a top quality steakhouse. I will admit, the prices are VERY high (the same as their outpost right outside of NYC in NJ.) Steakhouses, in general, are beginning to price themselves out of the market (especially in a town like Dayton). $50+ for just the steak, plus $13 for sides and $15 for a salad makes it a splurge only destination.
Fleming's participated in Dayton's Winter Restaurant Week so we took advantage of the opportunity to dine there and have a great dinner for $30.18 per person. The steak was great, very tender and cooked perfectly. The creamed spinach and mashed potatoes were also very good. Fleming's is a fairly pricey restaurant on par with Morton's and Ruth's Chris in terms of quality.
I have struggled with posting this review because, admittedly, I did not bring any of this up to management so they didn’t have an opportunity to remedy it. However, so many issues with our meal were visually obvious that any trained expo or BOH manager should’ve noticed them immediately.
We had 9:30 reservations on New Years Eve. We were a party of 4. I ordered the wedge salad, filet - cooked medium and Brussels sprouts. My partner ordered a wedge salad, chicken breast and wild mushrooms.
The wedge salads were delicious! No complaints.
My filet came out well done. There was NO pink in the middle at all. The Brussels Sprouts were basically carbon. They were completely burnt. Not grilled or “lightly charred”...they were fricking little chunks of charcoal with the most acidic vinegar on them anyone has tasted.
My partners chicken breast should have never left the the kitchen to begin with. The topping for the chicken was black and his physical chicken breast was black. I’m not kidding. Totally inedible and charcoal colored. Consequently, totally dry on the inside. Horrible!
The wild mushrooms we ordered...nothing more than button mushrooms. No portabella, no shiitake...nothing! Just slimy balls of domestic mushrooms. Terrible!!!!
I probably average 6 visits a year to Fleming’s and am familiar with their ability to deliver quality. I have always thought they were overpriced, but the food has been decent. This visit was totally unacceptable. My bill was $192 and I left a $40 cash tip because the SERVER WAS EXCELLENT!!! But for $232, I could’ve had an exponentially better meal for half that price at the competition on Far Hills in Oakwood.
I am so disappointed. I will struggle with ever going back unless Fleming’s strives to make it right and gives me a reason to return.
Lovely family dinner, with the expert service of Richard and crew. Steaks and lobster were excellent. Salads were not as cold as we normally are served, and forks were not chilled, but the policy may have changed there. Otherwise a very pleasant and well served meal.
Main dining area was really loud - I mean REALLY LOUD... to the point where after waiting nearly an hour for our reservation in the bar area, we gave up our table to go back into the bar to eat dinner, because it was quieter!
Positives: great wine selection & my kona rubbed strip was excellent
Negatives: ribeye was extremely fatty, well beyond the marbling expected for this cut & brussel sprouts side wasn't prepared even remotely as described on the menu - taste was completely drowned by the vinegar
Quite disappointing overall, particularly given the premium paid for the Flemings brand name
Arrived 10 minutes early and were promptly seated. A nice large wall table for 4 people was ample for the two of us. I have never liked the lighting at Flemings, personally I think it is too low. Promptly greeted and handed menus, service was efficient and friendly. I ordered a Lobster Bisque and small plate Filet. My girlfriend ordered the Wedge Salad and Petite Filet, we split a Mac and Cheese side order. The Lobster Bisque was perfect, right temperature, creamy, rich stock and large bits of Lobster in it. Outstanding. The Wedge Salad is well just Iceberg Lettuce, hard to get it wrong. Entrees were mediocre for the price. My Filet was perfectly cooked but the accompanying Risotto dull and lifeless. The Shiitake Mushrooms had become soggy inhabitants of the Risotto. The big disappointment was the Mac and Cheese. Slightly better than Kraft, dull limp and lifeless, with a runny Velveeta taste and look. Not acceptable in a steak house. Dessert was Creme Brulee which was good, served with a side of cream, totally unnecessary. A good dessert should stand on it's own, no need to embellish something that good. Service is efficient and professional. Checks are presented and collected in a timely manner. I think the standards should be higher for the price range that they operating.
