Food was fine, but the service was poor. When we asked why it took so long for someone to ask what we wanted to order and then why it took so long to get the food, they explained that there was a large group in the other room. Their apology seemed rehearsed and insincere. Since they did take our reservation, there is no reason we should receive poor service because of another group. We'll try a different place next time
We hadn't been here for a while and after going back to this restaurant we asked ourselves why we hadn't return sooner. The food is interesting and great. The service is professional and you can actually hear the person you are having dinner with.
The service was great and the presentation was wonderful. Their menu is limited but we enjoyed each item we ordered.
Excellent, quiet meal with a limited menu but very good food and service. Flea St has been an institution for many years in Menlo Park.
The food was very well prepared. The service was excellent and very well-trained. My main complaint is about the portion size. It was very small for an entree and my salmon didn't even have any carbohydrate on the plate and I felt hungry still at the end of the meal. I did not anticipate such a small portion. We even shared an appetizer. If I were to go back I know to have a starter for each person.
Both food and ambiance were excellent.
However, service was very slow and unimpressive. I had noted in my reservations that we were celebrating my husband’s birthday, but not once did the staff acknowledge that. Our waiter was quick to snatch up the check at the end of our meal, which was the only instance in which he was quick to come to our table. (Unfortunately, that’s one of my pet peeves, when the server takes the check before we actually leave the table; especially inappropriate for a fine dining place like this.)
Beautiful house, perfect for a date. Unfortunately, neither my date nor I were blown away by the food. And we should have been, for the money we paid. Overall, too expensive to go back.
Special occasions
This was our first visit. We will definitely return. Menu was varied with some interesting choices. Food and service excellent. We enjoyed the casual atmosphere. The reason for my three star rating for ambiance was the closeness of the tables. We were at a table for two with another table just inches away.
Fabulous as always. This is a go-to choice for any occasion!
The food was quite good. I had the crab appetizer, the smoked trout (which was my favorite) as a second course, cheese agnolotti for dinner and the chocolate cake with cherry chip ice cream for dessert. The appetizer was excellent - so fresh tasting. The smoked trout was super yummy - a departure from the norm. I thought the agnolotti was boring and not that tasty and the chocolate cake was very good but pretty standard fare.
My partner and I came on a recommendation from a friend. I think we were looking for something quite a bit livelier - my fault for not checking Yelp or similar first. The food was great, but the environment was a bit of a snooze fest.
Food was outstanding as usual ; 2 of had the smoked trout and I had the crab salad to start; lovely presentation. Then our table shared 2 of the pasta courses: the fettuccine with mushrooms and the ravioli.... consensus was the fettuccine was better but both were tasty. Then for the mains , 3 of us had the short ribs (always excellent!) and my husband had the salmon, which he enjoyed. We shared the panna cotta dessert.. presentation was so so but it was tasty. We stayed late and were one of 3 tables still there and the staff was very gracious and never made us feel rushed. Flea street is our favorite local restaurant for special occasions.
Inventive menu and good food. Every item was a bit different but not too exotic. Very flavorful.
I love this restaurant but this time service was not good. Server seemed distracted and not attentive at all
Reception protocol was rude. Asked us our name three times before seating us. The receptionists were unfriendly! What happened? We have been going there for years! Food was not as good as before.
Originally we made a reservation for 4 at 6:15. A few days before our reservation another couple decided to join us. Flea Street was wonderful about accommodating us as long as we were agreeable to change the time to 8:00. It worked out perfectly. Our table was in the room furthest from the entrance and it was great for conversing.
Drinks were delicious. I enjoyed the smoky flavor of the mezcal/beet cocktail and friends liked the lavender lemon martini.
We all agreed that the food we ordered was beautifully presented and delicious. Service was impeccable. We enjoyed a leisurely evening in a wonderful setting. Can’t wait to return.
The Flea Street Cafe offers a special dining experience with highly unique, eclectic and creative offerings. The service is friendly and outstanding. This restaurant is far too expensive to consider a frequent dining option. Reserve for special occasions.
We brought our house guest, visiting from New York, to the restaurant. She found the atmosphere warm and inviting, the food superb, and the service just perfect. It was very nice to see Jessie Cool taking such great care of her guests. May she reign forever.
The food is always amazing every time we dine here. Chef Charlie does a fantastic job with fresh & creative locally sourced ingredients. Great wine & beer selection. Our table was in the front room near the kitchen and a little busy. For a quieter experience request the middle or rear room.
My dinner came after waiting for a while and it was barely warm! Wait service was very slow! We asked for bread three times before receiving it. However, the best dish of the night was the oysters from Vancouver and steak tartare. Main courses were only fair! A little disappointed this time as the last time we were there service was impeccable. Wondering if our waiter last night was an untrained newbies.
Use to love the place. Last visit was not so great. Appetizers tasteless; the soup was described in a delicious manner but had no taste, the crab salad had just the crab over salad with a little tasteless puree. My main dish was very good (fish). The wine recommended was at best mediocre and did not match the food at all, and they have great wine. Described as a French style pinot noir. Sorry I know burgundy wines. Having a lower alcohol content does not make it French style. It was like a low end Oregon pinot noir, a chemically produced sweet grape juice. And I like the good Oregon pinot noir (i.e. Beaux Freres). The waiter and mostly everyone was very polite but try hard to create a sophisticated atmosphere: this is a neighborhood restaurant serving farm to table healthy dishes. When a waiter wants to make it uptight he/she needs to know his/her stuff, not the case last visit. They need to get the style back to reality. I am soooo disappointed for the food and the failed wine pairing we had. Sorry for the bad review, hopefully you will learn from it.
Must not miss. Michelin level cuisine without the michelin $$ (not cheap either, but its not meant to be).
Great place to have a quiet meal and the ambience is very nice. The waitress are very attentive and check in on us often.
I had the steak tartare with chips which were way too salty! The squab was good but , for me too rare!
The service was exceptional, food lived up to price and the cocktails were great. An elevated dining experience in a non pretentious neighborhood feel.
Both the food and the service were excellent! Our waitress was very attentive and and went the full 9 yards to accommodate all my requests. I love the ambience of Flea Street Cafe and will definitely keep going back.
We booked this restaurant for my husband's birthday. When we sat down they greeted him with a handwritten card saying happy birthday. The service was excellent and the food was beautifully displayed and delicious. Of particular note is that I had asked them to reserve a chocolate dessert for his birthday on my note on the Open Table reservation. When dessert time came the waiter said they were unfortunately out of the chocolate dessert. I told them that I was very disappointed to hear that given that I had specifically asked for that to be part of the meal. The waiter excused himself and said he would speak to the manager. Next thing we know we had a chocolate dessert! Not sure what they did, but they deserve kudos on Open Table for really listening to customers! Great meal and we will definitely be back!
Fabulous food- high quality from local farmers. I love supporting local and knowing what is on my plate. Keep up the great menu and service!
Wonderful and cozy. Excellent and fresh food. Foodie guests loved it.
I cannot give the restaurant the high marks I had hoped to; we got in at 5:30 hoping for a quiet spot, and they gave us a corner table; unfortunately the customers at the next table were very loud. ( not really the restaurants fault, but it spoiled the evening for us; my companion is very hard of hearing, and the noise made conversation difficult) as to the food, that too was somewhat of a disappointment: interesting to the point of not something I'd want to try again, the pasta apparently was cooked with spinach or green peas, any way it came out bright green, and a very small amount of pasta compared to the cabbage on top; the chicken I had was good,
the soup we began with (sunchoke) was the best part of the meal; the ending little dessert tidbit was nice , but we would have enjoyed it more if it had come with the coffee and tea we ordered in place of dessert; the tea was ginger, and so clearly ginger, my friend could not drink it. whether we made wrong choices, or just came on a 'bad night' I'm not sure, but I've been in this place in the past where it was outstanding, which is of course why I tried it again...the Fates were against us!
Flea is a pioneer for the Farm to Table movement that is so prevalent. The experience here is always wonderful and there service is top notch! They are committed to fresh, local ingredients and walk the walk with sourcing . Thank you!
The drinks, wine and food were excellent. The service wasn't commensurate with the quality of meal. The server was disengaged and treated our table like an afterthought. The experience was marred by him, but the food was so good we overlooked it.
Amazing food and service! Charlie created the best meals the season has to offer. Everything on the menu is a sure thing.
We save Flea Street for our most special occasions, in fact our first real dress up date in 2010 was there. Several birthdays including this one, my 61st. The food is always spot on wonderful, interesting, fresh, organic and local. I had the soup which was indescribably delicious with chanterelles, leeks and I think potatoes. The sole over potato dumplings was superb. The chocolate mousse over flourless brownie with ice cream was an amazingly indulgent treat. Wow! Thank you, Jessie, for coming through yet again for a truly special dining experience.
Great food but small portion. Definitely a place for foodies! Lucky to have this awesome restaurant in my neighborhood for so many years!
My adult daughter and I shared an unmemorable appetizer, first course of smoked salmon salad that was delicious, crab fettuccine with a tiny bit of crab and a bit heavy sauce, and date cake for dessert. All portions were small and not up to the usual flavor profile of Flea St. The kitchen did not split any of our orders. Highlights were the beet/ginger cocktail with mescal and tequila (beet/ginger ice cube continued to be delicious with water) and the buttermilk biscuit and baked bread. Came with a lovely amuse-bouche and pistachio mini cake with the check. Service was kind and timely until we needed to wait for the check.
This was our first visit to Flea Street. Menu was set up as a choice for up to three courses. We started with the baby beet salad which was vibrant with fresh. For the next course we had fettucini
with dungeness crab and black truffle. The pasta was suitably thin and obviously handmade fresh. It was the star it seemed. This because the crab meat was disappointing. Whereas it seemed to be fresh dungeness, it appeared to be shredded scraps rather than any nice, lump crab. The black truffle was in about 1 inch by quarter inch strips, like a chiffonade. The serving was about the size of a hockey puck and I don't think worth the $34 price for a side dish, not unless the crab meat quality were to be improved.
The entrees were a bit of a split. My wife had the chicken which was beautifully infused with the
flavor of lemon and herbs. I don't think I've ever encountered white meat chicken where so much flavor ran through and through. She was delighted. My short ribs were only somewhere between good and OK. This is a smallish serving with a lot of bitter cooked veggies. I don't eat the fat and once I'd trimmed that away, I was down about 25% of my protein. Considering the long braising process and the already smallish serving, I don't think I should have gotten as much fat as was present. The bitter greens totally over powered the rice grits. These seem so much like a smooth potato mash that I thought it was so. But, it didn't stand up well to the all the bitter cooked greens.
If you can find the menu online as I did, you will see the menu is pretty limited in choices. My wife and I agree that we would recommend Flea Street and we will go back. Today as I look again at the online menu via Yelp, I see the crab pasta is no longer listed there (not too surprising). Anyway, our next visit would be contingent on what is being offered - assuming
there's a seasonality to the menu.
Always great, always perfect. This time was no exception.
We have been going to Flea Street since it opened in the early 1980's. It has been consistently good, ups and downs, but over the last 10 years consistently excellent. Our recent meal was no exception, everything was interesting, well prepared and delicious. While not cheap, the quality is at the level of more expensive restaurants. The restaurant is always bustling, filled with regulars of all ages, but not noisy. We always look forward to eating there as a couple or with friends.
Flea Street was amazing. We really enjoyed everything. If the Caramelized Pear is still on the menu, save room for it. It was epic, to say the least. But everything we ordered was that way too. Can't say enough good things about it. Just don't forget your wallet.
