About Flea Street Cafe

Flea Street has been a Silicon Valley favorite since 1980. The atmosphere is contemporary, sophisticated and inviting. Executive Chef Charlie Parker, having cooked in Michelin Star Restaurants, recently returned to Menlo Park where he lived with his family just blocks from Flea Street. Jesse Ziff Cool, along with her remarkable staff, create a dining experience that is nurturing, soulful and memorable. The menu is a celebration of the rich Northern California food community: seafood is caught in the nearby Pacific, produce is carefully sourced from local farms, meat is grass-fed or pasture-raised to name just a few. Flea Street offers innovative yet approachable cuisine that showcases the very best of the season. Our bar specializes in martinis and unique cocktails using small batch liquors. A wine list features the best of California’s extraordinary vineyards with an emphasis on the local appellation--the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Great food but small portion. Definitely a place for foodies! Lucky to have this awesome restaurant in my neighborhood for so many years!

My adult daughter and I shared an unmemorable appetizer, first course of smoked salmon salad that was delicious, crab fettuccine with a tiny bit of crab and a bit heavy sauce, and date cake for dessert. All portions were small and not up to the usual flavor profile of Flea St. The kitchen did not split any of our orders. Highlights were the beet/ginger cocktail with mescal and tequila (beet/ginger ice cube continued to be delicious with water) and the buttermilk biscuit and baked bread. Came with a lovely amuse-bouche and pistachio mini cake with the check. Service was kind and timely until we needed to wait for the check.

This was our first visit to Flea Street. Menu was set up as a choice for up to three courses. We started with the baby beet salad which was vibrant with fresh. For the next course we had fettucini
with dungeness crab and black truffle. The pasta was suitably thin and obviously handmade fresh. It was the star it seemed. This because the crab meat was disappointing. Whereas it seemed to be fresh dungeness, it appeared to be shredded scraps rather than any nice, lump crab. The black truffle was in about 1 inch by quarter inch strips, like a chiffonade. The serving was about the size of a hockey puck and I don't think worth the $34 price for a side dish, not unless the crab meat quality were to be improved.
The entrees were a bit of a split. My wife had the chicken which was beautifully infused with the
flavor of lemon and herbs. I don't think I've ever encountered white meat chicken where so much flavor ran through and through. She was delighted. My short ribs were only somewhere between good and OK. This is a smallish serving with a lot of bitter cooked veggies. I don't eat the fat and once I'd trimmed that away, I was down about 25% of my protein. Considering the long braising process and the already smallish serving, I don't think I should have gotten as much fat as was present. The bitter greens totally over powered the rice grits. These seem so much like a smooth potato mash that I thought it was so. But, it didn't stand up well to the all the bitter cooked greens.

If you can find the menu online as I did, you will see the menu is pretty limited in choices. My wife and I agree that we would recommend Flea Street and we will go back. Today as I look again at the online menu via Yelp, I see the crab pasta is no longer listed there (not too surprising). Anyway, our next visit would be contingent on what is being offered - assuming
there's a seasonality to the menu.

We have been going to Flea Street since it opened in the early 1980's. It has been consistently good, ups and downs, but over the last 10 years consistently excellent. Our recent meal was no exception, everything was interesting, well prepared and delicious. While not cheap, the quality is at the level of more expensive restaurants. The restaurant is always bustling, filled with regulars of all ages, but not noisy. We always look forward to eating there as a couple or with friends.

Flea Street was amazing. We really enjoyed everything. If the Caramelized Pear is still on the menu, save room for it. It was epic, to say the least. But everything we ordered was that way too. Can't say enough good things about it. Just don't forget your wallet.

Moderately disappointing. This restaurant should be top notch in every aspect based on their prices and self-congratulatory attitude. Food in general was just OK to good, not extraordinary. Chicken dish was tasty but meat was dry. Pasta crab dish was creative but meager in crab (just a few crumbles) however one of our diners complained about portion and he was quickly offered another more generous plate (kudos to service person!) Steak entree was good according to one of our guests. Should be at $40 plus a plate. Salmon entree ordered by two of our guests "nothing special." Again, disappointing for an important occasion that we entrusted to Flea Street Cafe to be just OK - but nothing special.

This is our second visit. Food was inventive, interesting, delicious and though the portions may have looked on the smaller side, the food was filling and satisfying. The service was excellent. Looking forward to going back again.

A wonderful place for lunch or dinner. And..... be prepared to pay top dollar. For me, a glass of wine (cheapest $20) is more than I want to spend on regular basis. Dinner prices are also high. But, it's guaranteed to be delicious and memorable.

It would be difficult to find fault with this restaurant due to its ethical stance on providing a living wage to employees and using local sources for ingredients, flavors of dishes and very professional, yet friendly service. The prices reflect the reality of providing the above. To return, it would need to be a very special occasion, not a casual "let's go....." I would hesitate to recommend based on the final bill. Dinner for three, one glass of wine each, starter and main, no dessert was close to $250.00.

I have been going to the Flea St for a long time. On the whole, it has always left me a bit underwhelmed but this time I thought the food was really good. The chef must have improved. Also, there are some really good, not too expensive bottles of wine on the list.

My wife and I have eaten at Flea Street Cafe a number of times, and the food is always excellent. For our most recent visit, however, we were surprised at the very small size of the entrees. Each of our entrees cost about $50, figuring in tax and tip as well as price. The size of my wife's fish entree was about 2/3 the size of a medium-sized cupcake, and I had to give her some of my lamb entree (which wasn't very large either) as a supplement. I don't recall small-sized entrees as being a problem in the past at Flea Street. But in the Palo Alto area, having to pay $50 for a very small entree, we'll be looking at equally good restaurants that provide equally high quality dinners as well as more lusty portions. Again, though, the food we had was excellent, if you're not fussy about portion size.

The always-wonderful Flea Street Cafe was yet again wonderful. The cocktails were tasty, we love the wine list (so many great CA wines), and our food was great. We shared shrimp fritters and a halibut crudo among the table then ordered the chicken, ox tail, and cod. We love the space that they've been in forever (for the 40+ years we've been going there).

Quiet lil restaurant that everyone looks for but never finds. This place is it! Almost don’t want to give it a good review for fear that it will stop being a cute lil place to have an amazing meal but wouldn’t do that to the place.

After an unreasonably long wait (over 20 minutes) for a properly reserved table, my date and I were eventually seated. Frankly, I'm sympathetic to turning tables, but the wait was simply too long. We were not the only delayed party; I saw at least 3 others. This is a significant issue, that is obviously not limited to just our experience. While the food was stupendous, as was the table service, the seating delay poisoned our dining experience.

Jesse Cool is always a welcoming, comfortable place, with good food and excellent service. Jesse herself came by, and was her usual warm self: very friendly, genuinely interested in treating her customers as guests. They had a very nice amuse-bouche: half a fig in balsamic vinegar. And, as many of her wonderful biscuits as you can eat.

This is a lovely, intimate restaurant with very creative recipes. Their homemade biscuits are amazing! Wine by the glass is sold in 1/2 glass and full glass. However, the whole class looks like 1/2 glass. I deducted one star because of this. They also have an excellent wine list.

Flea Street Cafe delivered the best anniversary dinner my wife and I have ever shared (we were there celebrating number 11!). I had used the OpenTable app to notify the restaurant that we were there to celebrate. We were greeted with the words, "Happy Anniversary!", and as we were shown to our table we were asked even more about our occasion. When seated, we found a card picturing an elderly couple sitting together on on a bench and kissing -- on the back was a hand-written note thanking us for choosing Flea Street as the place to celebrate. Later in the evening, the owner of the restaurant stopped by to chat with us and told us that the elderly couple on the front of our card were HER PARENTS! It was just the most intimate, hospitable experience -- we felt so special.

The food was (and always is) fantastic, fresh and representative of changes in season. There are also some consistent staples -- the biscuits ... OMG, the biscuits.

This was a night to remember, as any anniversary should be. Thank you, Flea Street!
