Flavor of India - West Hollywood - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
One of our favorite go-to spots in West Hollywood. Flavor of India has a lovely ambiance, and we especially enjoy the bench seats near the kitchen with the low tables and cushions. The covered patio is also nice for a romantic dinner or evening with friends. The staff is great, and very helpful with menu suggestions. I have dined here with Indian friends, one who once suggested the food wasn't "Indian" enough - meaning it was spiced more for Western tastes. They were more than happy to season the meal to his tastes, so everyone was happy with what they had. I've dined in India and plenty of Indian restaurants here in the USA, and have always found the meals at Flavor of India to be among the best. Do try the Baingan Bharta! If you love Aubergine, you will enjoy this dish! My only wish would be to have Dal Makhani on the menu all the time.
The place is quaint. The service was good. The food was just OK. We had four people in our party. I didn't enjoy my meal (I probably ate a spoon full of each dish) and another person dining with us didn't enjoy his food either. Only one of the people enjoyed their food. I had lots of leftovers and ended up throwing them out.
My friend had never had Indian food before and wanted to give it a try. I told the waiter that she was in Indian food virgin and they were very helpful. We had a combination lunch that included salad, rice, naan and a choice of one vegetarian and one meat entrée. Our food was delicious. We had chicken tiki masala and garbanzo beans. The owner came over to our table and spoke with us and he couldn't have been more gracious or welcoming. We had a one and would definitely come back again. The only issue I had was that it was a hot day and the restaurant is kind of open air so there was no air-conditioning. I probably would not come back in the summer.
This is a heavily based chicken menu, with very few options other than chicken. Not necessarily a bad thing, but if you want variety, not really going to find it here. Also, we noticed that they were very heavy-handed with a spice, maybe cardamom, that gave every dish an overpowering floral/perfume taste that was off-putting.
Secondly, our waiter had communication issues. We asked about sharing a couple of dishes, but he didn't understand what we were asking. He kept thinking we wanted to share one dish and was asking which one was bigger. He also tried to get us to order two sides of rice, where one side would easily feed 3 or 4 people.
I realize that the Indian food in the U.S. will differ from the U.K. but I have had several Indian meals in the U.S. and this was very average The waiter knew about the menu but any other questions on 'his' country's food he was clueless.
The dishes were fairly bland or full of garlic.
Please tell the waiter that there is a difference between Tandoori chicken 'off the bone' and Chicken Tikka
We have been coming here for over 15 years. We have lived all over the US and whenever we try a new Indian place in other cities or in LA we compare it to this restaurant and always come back. We like very mild spice and this place always gets it just right. Our friends who like hot and spicy that we bring here are always satisfied, too. Service is always friendly and relaxed. Our favorite spot for Indian.
We are big fans of Flavor of India. Time and again, we are asked to try other Indian restaurants in the area and we consistently return to the utter joy and inspiration that our experience brings with Flavor of India. Owner Darshan welcomes his guests with such a huge and happy smile, that in itself is the start of a wonderful night. We consistently order takaway and delivery as well and have been doing it for over 10 years. We've even gathered a group of friends and had a wonderful cooking class on a Sunday afternoon, sharing in the large meal directly after. A good time is always had by all. Simply love it!
The people who worked there were very friendly and professional. It has a great relaxed but cute atmosphere and it's spacious. I liked the wine list, some nice things on there at reasonable prices. I just didn't think the food was all that good, unfortunately. Perhaps we ordered the wrong things.
My girlfriend and I are regulars there. We go 2-3 times a month and we both love the shrimp tikka masala. The garlic naan is magnificent and the parking is very convenient. Usually Naveed or Vincent waits on us and they are always happy to see us. We are both picky eaters and not foodies, but rather we have specific tastes and the food is consistently good every time. They have low turnover of the staff and everyone seems to enjoy working there. Strongly recommended!
MSG - beware. Woke up with the worse headache and super dehydrated (didn't have any alcohol). Chicken is bad quality, dry and hard, not tender. Breads are basically gross - hard and dry also. Service is weird, they'd rather bus tables near you (waiter) and keep you waiting for 30 mins before checking in on you again. They consolidate your leftovers in one container (even different types of curries), throw away your leftovers (even though you specifically asked them to package) because there's only 2-3 pieces left of chicken, and then criticize you for wanting to keep the small leftover portion. I'll never go back.
We dined on a Thursday night and the restaurant was very quiet so not much atmosphere but was fine and staff were helpful. The food was very good - we shared the chicken chat to start which was really tasty - very fresh flavours with a good amount of spice. I had butter chicken for the main which was very good and my husband had chicken vindaloo. He was warned it was very hot - and it was! But he enjoyed it. Would recommend.
A friend wanted to get a small group together to celebrate his birthday & one couple is vegan, so he chose Flavor of India in order to satisfy both the vegans and non-vegans. We had a great time there. The food came up quickly and was delicious; the service, attentive. Overall, we were very pleased with the selection.
The service wasn't attentive and seemed overly frustrated by my guests who didn't know anything about Indian food. We often just sat wanting something hoping someone would notice. The chai tea is really below standard for most places in this city. A couple of us had digestion issues all night, to put it nicely. Overall, it was okay, but nothing to go out of your way for.
I have eaten in this restaurant for over 20 years and it is one of my favorites in LA. For some reason, this time the food just wasn't up to their usual suburb standard. It was, for an Indian restaurant, very average. While average is not bad, I expect so much more from them. I hope next visit they have recovered their old sparkle!
My husband is Indian so we have eaten in many Indian restaurants throughout California and in San Francisco where we live, but Flavor of India in West Hollywood is our favorite. Delicious food. Cozy atmosphere. Friendly staff. When we are in L.A. we always go to Flavor of India.
This place has been there forever and I've driven by a million times. Our service was professional and pleasant and the food was fresh, well-prepared and tasty. It was kind of quiet when we were there for dinner, but everything came out quickly, was relish and authentic. I would definitely recommend it! A rarity in West Hollywood!
Found the food to be rather uninteresting, and not well presented (at least make it look better) - I won't go back. We made reservations on a very busy event night in West Hollywood thinking we would never find a place to eat. Every other restaurant down Santa Monica had lines outside, not this place.. now I know why. Very few people in the place and the food was unremarkable.. and a bit pricey for what we got.
