Fivespice Seafood & Wine Bar Ratings and Reviews
I had dinner with some relatives visiting from Nashville and we had a lovely meal. The food was excellent, as was the service. My nephew (who was picking up the bill) thought the prices were quite high. Particularly for the amount of food served. Overall, we all liked it very much and had a lovely meal. The restaurant is really attractive. I would add, however, that more signage would help. It's really hard to find. We expected it to be at the front, where the big sign is, but had to ask another merchant where to find the entrance.
The food was very good, as usual. The waiter was very attentive and engaging (unusual for this place, usually the service is not great). The hostess and the busboy seemed to have no idea what to do at all. We had a reservation but it took the busboy about 7-10 minutes just to clear a table (there were many open though). The hostess was sloppily dressed, apathetic and rarely at the host stand (would seat people then stop, chat, wander around, chat some more). It's like she and the busboy were high or moving through molasses. Very odd. No hustle, no concern for anything, no ability to think or move quickly. But... the food was great!
We felt the salads had taken a turn for the worse. The same salads were featured on the menu as when we were last there, but all were much smaller in size and over-priced. The Seafood Stew was great as was the calamari appetizer. Drinks inc wine were also over priced, even though we went on Sunday when bottles are half off. Overall, we felt the quality of the food had gone downhill from the last times we were there a year or so ago.
We tried Fivespice after seeing it on Open Table. It is an upscale restaurant which was extremely enjoyable. It overlooks Lake Oswego, but the indoor tables don't seem to have much of a view due to the outdoor balcony blocking most of it. The kitchen is open and we sat directly in front of it and enjoyed watching all the dishes coming out. I had the lobster tails and my spouse enjoyed the filet mignon. We both thought our dinners were excellently prepared. We had a pre-course shared salad and prawn cocktail - both excellent. There was a bit of a lag between courses, but otherwise our server was attentive. Dessert was the chocolate mousse - also excellent. I believe, based on seeing the dishes come out of the kitchen that all dishes would be equally excellent and we very much plan on a return trip to this restaurant. Reservations recommended as we were there on a Thurs. night with reservations and the restaurant was packed. Highly recommended.
I made a reservation to celebrate my birthday. When we showed up we checked in about 10 minutes early and were told we needed to wait for a table to clear, which was fine. We waited 15 minutes and still didn't have a table, other parties were being seated at this time. There were two hostesses working, and I nicely asked the hostess who did not check us in how much longer it would be. The hostess who checked us in came back and sassily I told you it would be 10 minutes. Then made us wait another 10 minutes to get seated. That ruined the mood for the dinner, will not be going back there again.
In a great area with lots of character and beautiful views! Once you find where to find the stairs it is just one level up to a wonderful dining area and bar. Staff was nice. Food was great (Ahi tuna was A+!). Only problem was our server a little late checking on us for water refills and food quality. Also, when we got there we were seated in the back of the room (farthest from entry) and it was FREEZING cold because windows were open. Made no sense since it was raining and pretty cold out outside (low to mid 40's) When we finally got our server to close the window it warmed up a little 15 min later or so. When we wanted to go out on the patio where there were fire pits going after our meal we were told it was already closed. Why entice us then with the fire pits?? These are fairly minor problems and even considering them we would definitely go back.
The main room is very (VERY) noisy; we asked for and got a table in the "quieter zone." It was quiet but felt isolating, out of the view of most diners and the kitchen. We ordered salads, entrées and wine by the glass. The mixed greens salad was fine, the dungeness crab/beet salad only so so (not much crab, and what there was was too wet and watery. The arugula that made up most of the crab and beet salad was somewhat tasteless and seemed not to be fresh. The sautéed sea scallops on a bed of lentils was quite good, as was the seafood stew. Although the portions of wine by the glass were generous, the prices were a dollar or three on the high side for the wines in question. Our server, Ethan, was attentive, courteous and generally efficient, though not the most thoroughly informed or polished. The bill, over all, was reasonable for an establishment of this kind.
We are regulars at Fivespice and have been for several years. The reason we go there is great service and terrific food. However, last night we were disappointed in the service, and the food wasn't quite up to its usual standard. It was a busy Friday evening, but we expect as folks that go there often to be very well looked after, which is why we brought two guests with us. Main courses arrived before appetizer plates had been cleared which was awkward, and too many gaps in general attentiveness meant significant time gaps between drinks. Our bill for four people was well over $300 before tip, that's a lot for a neighborhood restaurant. We very much hope Fivespice will be back to its usual high standard next time we return.
We had a wonderful dinner. I had the halibut special and my husband had the grilled scallops. It was my husband's birthday and after the dinner a surprise scoop of ice cream with a lit candle was presented to him for dessert. It was a wonderful setting and we look forward to going there in the summer so we can sit outside and enjoy a glass of wine or a martini. The service was very good, though our wine glasses were poured very full ( we had bought a bottle of wine). The staff was very friendly. I am looking forward to taking my sister and brother in law to dinner here when they come up to visit.
