Just consistently good - a perfect place before matinee at Berkeley Rep.
Great food (duck and steaks) and attentive service. Will definitely come back again!
The food and ambience were very good. The service was gracious but a little slow.
This is a wonderful venue with good food and ambiance. I hope the planned remodel doesn't wreck it. The food and environment were great. The service was poor as our waiter was too busy chatting with other servers to properly check on our table.
Food was average, felt that the lighting was a bit too bright. Parking is a bit difficulty. The main issue was the food, we felt that it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t that good either
I found the lunch menu not very broad or appealing if you didn’t want a hamburger. What I did order- tuna sandwich one day and veggie/cheese sandwich the next - were only fair as was the butterscotch pudding. I think improvements in menu choices and execution are warranted.
We had our dinner at 8:30 pm. The restaurant was nearly empty. Still our food was excellent and the service attentive.
This was my first time at Five, but certainly not my last. I took a friend for a special occasion, and we agreed it was a real treat. The food was great with generous portions; the wait-staff was especially helpful; and the space and decor were beautiful. I can't wait to return.
We always enjoy our meals at Five. They are creative and well-prepared. We truly look forward to the Christmas bunch each year. The selection is delicious, thoughtful and pleasing to the eye. We especially love that, even though it is a very nice adult restaurant, we always feel that our young daughter is welcome.
This is our go-to place when friends are visiting. The room is lovely and elegant in a warm and welcoming way. The service is always excellent. And, as a quiet dining spot, we are sure to have good conversations. The menu is not as extensive or creative as our North Berkeley favorites. But for downtown Berkeley dining, this is a great place for a satisfying meal. And it is steps from the BART stop.
Valentines menu had weak first course, excellent second and third. Waiter was knowledgeable when it came to the wine list.
Love Zut. It’s my go to place with Marin Country friends
The person who waited on us was amazing.
The steak was excellent and the service was very good. We went there before a concert at Freight and Salvage, and the location is good for that.
Wonderful atmosphere in a historic room with beautiful large windows and posts. We had delicious fresh salmon and butterscotch puffing and a split a lovely organic
salad as a first course. Service was friendly and efficient. My only complaints that after we worked for several hours through happy hour in the bar and they told us that we could buy a drink to bring to dining table in the restaurant it was only after we ordered drinks that from the bartender that we found that the drink we had ordered wasn't included in happy hour pricing even though we had explicitly asked to buy a happy hour drink and the hostess nicely had suggested we could do this and could cash out at the bar. But overall a wonderful meal with delicious side dishes or light sauce for the fish.
Very slow service and slow dinner prep. Undercooked brussel sprouts, over cooked and grisly steak. I’ve eaten here before and had much better experience then.
What a great place! The biggest surprise about Five is that it's not mobbed--the food and service are excellent, the ambiance is lovely. I've been there a couple times now, and it's been fantastic both times.
We met friends before the Berkeley Frieght and Salvage Show. We were all new comers to Five. We had attentive friendly service. Our entrees were overall good. Portions of our seafood and duck were smaller than expected, yet tasty. For the price we had hoped for a satisfying meal and not having to grab a nibble after our theater experience.
We always get excellent food, creative and interesting. The appetizers are excellent, the cocktails are also delicious. This restaurant is a nice place for conversation and also nice for late dining. Staff are excellent - friendly, helpful, attentive.
There were lots of interesting desserts on the menu. Butterscotch pudding was especially delicious
This should probably be a 3.5 star review. I thought everything was perfectly fine and I'd definitely go back, but it didn't blow me away. Nothing was "bad" per se, I just have any standouts, short of their biscuits (really good). I think one or two more meals there would help me make up my mind.
Will, our waiter was exceptional. We received friendly and courteous service from him. Other staff were also helpful.
The place was known for brunch, however, the kitchen closes at 1pm (the middle of brunch time).
We enjoyed a very nice dinner at Five. My husband is especially fond of their grilled salmon entree and I tried their Fruttii di Mare con Fagioli, a nice seafood stew with grilled bread. We were both pleased with our dishes. The service was very good--attentive and helpful.
When you enter Five, you feel like you're in a different city....a big city and not San Francisco. Five is swanky and urban. I really liked it and look forward to returning. Berkeley needs Five badly. Food was great too.
Took a group of 6 for lunch and couldn't be happier with the decision to go to FIVE. Food, service and space were excellet! I will definitely be back to this spot.
Really nice room in Hotel lobby - elegant - food was excellent! Service was a bit disjointed as they were understaffed but our waiter was very friendly and accommodating even though taking care of the whole restaurant.
Excellent brunch and wonderful service!
We totally enjoyed our New Year’s Day celebration.
We had our New Year's Eve 2018 dinner there and the prix fixed menu was outstanding! Great flavors in every dish, served on slate plate to keep our food warm, original presentation, and in perfect proportion. The only down side was that I felt our server rushed us at the end. He probably had plans to celebrate the new year somewhere, but I can't blame him! We were told that no chef was in charge that night, so bravo to the sous-chef!
This is a place that has had its ups and downs re food quality, but it seems to be on the rise, a welcome addition to the reasonably priced restaurants near the theatre district in Berkeley. We had an excellent lamb roast with accompanying veggies. My husband and I will return.
Menu didn’t match what was on line - neither in price (was much more expensive when we got there) nor food (much more ‘artsy’ food than the burgers we were looking forward too).
Loved the eggs benedict!!
This was the perfect place for brunch with our large group of 12. We were able to make a reservation which was great. The service was slow but the positive side of that was they didn't bother us as we sat there talking for hours. Our server was very accommodating whenever we asked for anything. By the time we left the restaurant was pretty full but it was not too noisy. We loved the decor. Our food was excellent and I thought the meal was a great value. All of us were shocked at how little we were expected to contribute. None of us had alcohol which may have helped. I would definitely come again and recommend to a friend.
Food was very mediocre. Service was good. Doubtful I’ll return
The chicken was dry. The green beans hard. The seafood dish had almost no seafood. Definitely will not return.
Do not eat at this restaurant. This was our experience: We were 5 for dinner. 2 entrees arrived. The duck dish was very good. The salmon was cold, so we sent it back. The Fruit de Mar (described on the menu as including shrimp and scallops) then arrived and had mussels and clams (my cousin is allergic to mussels), so we sent that dish back. The salmon came back. The plate was hot but the food was still luke warm. My sister could not eat it. My husbands dish, a vegetarian plate, finally arrived and was good. The Fruiti de Mar came back without mussels and clams and was so so. About 30 minutes later, my gnocchi arrived and was good, not great. The pickled baby tomatoes tasted like they were simply soaked in vinegar and were completely incompatible with the Moroccan spiced gnocchi. The waiter seemed oblivious about the poor service and ignorant about the menu. And the management was indifferent when we complained about the service, the food and the timing of the entrees. One manager offered to not charge us for the salmon - the only acceptable option since the entree was not eaten. When we said we didn't feel that was the appropriate compensation given the poor service, the manager replied, "I'll think about it." When we received the bill, we were charged for 2 Fruit di Mars, but they did remove the salmon. The waiter apologized for his error. We then complained again to another manager and said it didn't seem like they were interested in having us as return customers. He replied, "Good point" and he then comped our cocktails - a solution that we all thought should have been offered as soon as the management became aware of the poor service and problems with the food. All in all, we were baffled by the staff's indifference to the quality of the food, service, or customer satisfaction.
We did not plan on a buffet. The Open Table reservation did not state that the only meal would be buffet.
The beet salad had almost no beets and tasted of refrigerator. The squab was undercooked and tasteless, with a tasteless brown glop of a sauce. The seafood dish was nothing like the menu described, it was a stew of clams and mussels rather than prawns and scallops.
Expensive mediocre food that took way too long and had to be eaten in ten minutes to make our show. I like the space but would definitely never go back.
We had a pleasant family dinner at Five to celebrate my husband's birthday. It was a busy night so maybe that's why it took over 1/2 hour for our drink order to arrive. Food was more timely and good, except for the roast chicken, which was overcooked and too dry.
