Great service, beautiful room.
Food was at best ok. A middle eastern inspired dish that I should have known not to get but hummus sounded good. Hummus was terrible. Oily and inedible. Included sliced focacia that had been toasted or something to the point that it was more appropriate for wall tile than food. Service was abysmal. Ignored for the most part, and appetizers came with mains after 50 minutes. Can't recommend.
Five has a perfect Downtown Berkeley location. As a pre-theater spot, or close to BART when people are coming from multiple directions.
The waiter answered all our questions about the delicious vegan pavlova.
Great table. Great service. Great food. We were able to stay on for quite a while catching up with our out-of-town friends without anyone’s hovering over us to make us leave. Love this restaurant!!
Do you ever change your menu?! It seems not, so I am not tempted to eat there very often, even though the food is good.
We ate here on. Sunday night over Spring Break. It was virtually empty 7:30-8:30.
Don't order the baby beet salad. We split it and got very ill within hours. We lost one of our days for visiting SF. We won't be coming back!!
Dined here before and really liked the food, but this time we were really disappointed with the menu selection and preparation. Not sure that I'll return anytime soon. Room is beautiful, pretty slow for Friday evening.......which should have been my clue.
My dining partner and I both felt FIVE is just meh. The appetizer meatballs were tasty, but dry. The gravlox could have been bought anywhere and just had mustard slathered on them and tasted the same.
My duck was good, but they said it would be medium rare when it was in actuality just rare, barely warm in the middle. My friends steak was tough, she had to saw through the meat and gave up after a few bites. No one ever came by to ask how our main courses were. When someone came by and asked if he could take her plate away, he didn’t even ask them even though she had eaten only a few bites on a plateful of food.
I won’t be going back.
Well-nigh perfect for a reunion of old friends. Superb friendly and courteous service. YES!
Went here for Breakfast. Everything was delicious and fresh!
Food was very good. We could hear each other—yay! Beautiful looking room.
Service was bad. Restaurant wasn’t crowded but 25 minutes after ordering drinks I went to one of the staff standing about and asked about our order. Wrong drinks arrived. Finally, our wine and martini.
What if the restaurant had been full??
This is the third time I've eaten here. The first was for a Thanksgiving dinner (pretty good) and the second and third were for birthday lunches. If you like sandwiches they are tasty. But there's a carb-heavy emphasis to the dishes. Would have preferred more simple proteins. The salad that came with my veggie sandwich (it said it had cheese but I didn't taste any) was just a huge pile of arugula with a drizzle of a tasty dressing. Not very imaginative. But overall, not overly impressive.
Just consistently good - a perfect place before matinee at Berkeley Rep.
Great food (duck and steaks) and attentive service. Will definitely come back again!
The food and ambience were very good. The service was gracious but a little slow.
This is a wonderful venue with good food and ambiance. I hope the planned remodel doesn't wreck it. The food and environment were great. The service was poor as our waiter was too busy chatting with other servers to properly check on our table.
Food was average, felt that the lighting was a bit too bright. Parking is a bit difficulty. The main issue was the food, we felt that it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t that good either
I found the lunch menu not very broad or appealing if you didn’t want a hamburger. What I did order- tuna sandwich one day and veggie/cheese sandwich the next - were only fair as was the butterscotch pudding. I think improvements in menu choices and execution are warranted.
We had our dinner at 8:30 pm. The restaurant was nearly empty. Still our food was excellent and the service attentive.
This was my first time at Five, but certainly not my last. I took a friend for a special occasion, and we agreed it was a real treat. The food was great with generous portions; the wait-staff was especially helpful; and the space and decor were beautiful. I can't wait to return.
We always enjoy our meals at Five. They are creative and well-prepared. We truly look forward to the Christmas bunch each year. The selection is delicious, thoughtful and pleasing to the eye. We especially love that, even though it is a very nice adult restaurant, we always feel that our young daughter is welcome.
This is our go-to place when friends are visiting. The room is lovely and elegant in a warm and welcoming way. The service is always excellent. And, as a quiet dining spot, we are sure to have good conversations. The menu is not as extensive or creative as our North Berkeley favorites. But for downtown Berkeley dining, this is a great place for a satisfying meal. And it is steps from the BART stop.
Valentines menu had weak first course, excellent second and third. Waiter was knowledgeable when it came to the wine list.
Love Zut. It’s my go to place with Marin Country friends
The person who waited on us was amazing.
The steak was excellent and the service was very good. We went there before a concert at Freight and Salvage, and the location is good for that.
Wonderful atmosphere in a historic room with beautiful large windows and posts. We had delicious fresh salmon and butterscotch puffing and a split a lovely organic
salad as a first course. Service was friendly and efficient. My only complaints that after we worked for several hours through happy hour in the bar and they told us that we could buy a drink to bring to dining table in the restaurant it was only after we ordered drinks that from the bartender that we found that the drink we had ordered wasn't included in happy hour pricing even though we had explicitly asked to buy a happy hour drink and the hostess nicely had suggested we could do this and could cash out at the bar. But overall a wonderful meal with delicious side dishes or light sauce for the fish.
Very slow service and slow dinner prep. Undercooked brussel sprouts, over cooked and grisly steak. I’ve eaten here before and had much better experience then.
What a great place! The biggest surprise about Five is that it's not mobbed--the food and service are excellent, the ambiance is lovely. I've been there a couple times now, and it's been fantastic both times.
We met friends before the Berkeley Frieght and Salvage Show. We were all new comers to Five. We had attentive friendly service. Our entrees were overall good. Portions of our seafood and duck were smaller than expected, yet tasty. For the price we had hoped for a satisfying meal and not having to grab a nibble after our theater experience.
We always get excellent food, creative and interesting. The appetizers are excellent, the cocktails are also delicious. This restaurant is a nice place for conversation and also nice for late dining. Staff are excellent - friendly, helpful, attentive.
There were lots of interesting desserts on the menu. Butterscotch pudding was especially delicious
This should probably be a 3.5 star review. I thought everything was perfectly fine and I'd definitely go back, but it didn't blow me away. Nothing was "bad" per se, I just have any standouts, short of their biscuits (really good). I think one or two more meals there would help me make up my mind.
Will, our waiter was exceptional. We received friendly and courteous service from him. Other staff were also helpful.
The place was known for brunch, however, the kitchen closes at 1pm (the middle of brunch time).
We enjoyed a very nice dinner at Five. My husband is especially fond of their grilled salmon entree and I tried their Fruttii di Mare con Fagioli, a nice seafood stew with grilled bread. We were both pleased with our dishes. The service was very good--attentive and helpful.
When you enter Five, you feel like you're in a different city....a big city and not San Francisco. Five is swanky and urban. I really liked it and look forward to returning. Berkeley needs Five badly. Food was great too.
Took a group of 6 for lunch and couldn't be happier with the decision to go to FIVE. Food, service and space were excellet! I will definitely be back to this spot.
Really nice room in Hotel lobby - elegant - food was excellent! Service was a bit disjointed as they were understaffed but our waiter was very friendly and accommodating even though taking care of the whole restaurant.
Excellent brunch and wonderful service!
We totally enjoyed our New Year’s Day celebration.
